[Twenty-seventh of May, Two Thousand and Six]

I opened my eyes as if I had never slept. My body felt as if nothing had changed. My hair had not grown longer or duller, my skin had not wrinkled or blemished, my wings had not shriveled from unuse, my stomach had not wasted away from a lack of food.

I rose to my feet and stretched my limbs, fluttering my wings to be sure they still remembered how to fly. I still felt the same.

The forest, however, had changed without me. Small saplings had become grand trees, and flowers were growing where before there had been none. Beyond the forest, where once there had been a vast field of ruins, there lay houses with newly plastered walls and huts with freshly made roofs.

Humans...? Who is rebuilding human houses?

I lit upon a piece of ruin, observing the houses. They were undeniably new, and yet they seemed to have been occupied for no short period of time.

Humans... Humans have returned.

I heard the voice of another Sidhe calling out, and as I turned, I saw the source, as well as a human approaching it. Neither being showed fear or distrust of the other; in fact, they seemed most companionable.

How remarkable! Sidhe and humans... at peace again?

I spread my wings and lifted myself to the roof of the house nearest them. As I watched them, a warmth filled me, and I closed my eyes to hear Fate speak to me. A veiled face came into my mind, a shrouded smile, the echo of a warm laugh.

I... and a human? What a marvel....

Having received this vision, I flew to seek the human with whom I was meant to bond. I trusted that Fate would find her worthy.

Silver Angel walked along the beach of the Port of Gambino, feeling the cool breeze in her hair and the soft sand between her toes. She had left the children at home, with the oldest ones looking out for the younger ones; today was a day just for her to relax and explore the land of Gaia a bit. Silver loved her children, no doubt about that, but there were times she just needed to be by herself and have her own adventure.

On days like these, she'd just sit and watch the sea, or wade in the water if the sun got too hot. As she walked along the beach, she picked up pretty rocks smoothed by the waves or a few shells that crabs or snails had abandoned. She remembered the legend of the diamond shell and could only hope she could be so lucky, but Silver never really knew what she would find.

She never suspected that adventure would come and find her. As she stooped in the sand to pick up another shell, she caught a glint of something shiny out of the corner of her eye. Curious, she stood up and looked out toward the sea. Sure enough, something shiny flying this way! Silver was excited--she loved shiny things, and shiny flying things were probably good, too.

The bright, shiny thing drew ever closer to Silver Angel, approaching so quickly that for a moment, she was afraid it was a very large insect. She held her hand over her eyes, shading them, and ready to protect them in case that shiny thing wasn't particularly friendly.

I turned at the faint sound of soft laughter. It sounded familiar, like the sound I had heard in my vision. I squinted at the figure in the distance, flying nearer to get a better look. It was a young woman with dark hair, the same color as I had forseen. That must be her, I thought as I rapidly closed the distance between us.

Watching as the bright, shiny, flying thing sped toward her, Silver Angel was startled when it stopped only a foot or two in front of her face. It wasn't a flying jewel at all! It was some sort of sprite--a male, at that--with thin wings, pale blue skin, and dark blue and gold clothes. Her mouth opened in wonder, and she took a step back to view it little better, her hand shifting from her forehead to beside her cheek.

I paused, observing this figure whom I had seen in my vision. Could she be the one Fate had destined to be bonded to me?

Brow furrowing, unwilling to speak in case she would frighten the fairy-like creature away, Silver brought her hand away from her face and over her heart instead.

I must have made her uncomfortable with my silence. I carefully hovered in the space before her and made a slow bow. My name is Lantis. I am a Sylph, a Sidhe, a creature the magicks have blessed. I am here to tell you of my people and our need for companions to aid us in the rebuilding of our home island. I believe Fate has led me to you so that we may be bonded to each other.

Silver Angel blinked and blushed as the fluttering creature spoke. When he was done, the hand over her heart had closed hesitantly. "I am Silver Angel... you... think your home needs me...?"

I bowed again in midair and smiled. "I do believe you can help. Please accompany me; I will show you the way to Faylinn. I shall explain to you what has happened to the best of my ability." I extended my hand to her as a sign of my trust, hoping she would be willing to lend the assistance Faylinn so needed.

Touching her fingers slowly and carefully to the tiny ones that Lantis held out to her, Silver Angel nodded. "I'm not sure what you mean, but... if you really need my help... I'll do what I can."

Grateful beyond words that she had the heart to help, I bowed my head in thanks. "This way, please. Follow me!" I fluttered my wings quickly and turned to lead her to Faylinn.

"Wait!" Silver called out, reaching a hand out to stop Lantis. "Just a minute! I... I can't..." She brought her hand back and wrung her fingers nervously. "I can't swim very well."

I was hovering over the sea between the sandy beach and the shores of Faylinn. In my haste, I had neglected that the human could not travel as I could. "Please forgive me," I apologized with another bow. "I will find another way..."

Looking to the side, still a little anxiously, Silver said, "There's one more thing..." She looked into Lantis's blue eyes, her own soft gray ones full of concern. "I have children at home, and I can't leave them for long... I will be able to come back, won't I?"

Ah, young ones! I thought. How thoughtless of me to ask her to leave everything to help me! Faylinn seemed to be doing well enough for now, with the other Sidhe and humans working together. Surely it could wait a day or two longer until my new companion had taken care of her own affairs and was ready to join me there.

"Of course," I said. "Please attend to your family first. If it's not too much to ask..." I paused, fearing I should sound presumptuous.

Silver Angel smiled, as if knowing what the Sidhe was thinking. "Would you like to come back home with me and meet my family? I'm sure if you come along and explain things, they won't miss me quite so much when I go to your home. How about it?"

Ever grateful, I flew and took her hand and kissed the back of it. "You are too kind, milady. I would be honored."

With that, the two were off, the Sidhe flitting beside the human and explaining what he could.
