Have you ever wondered if the outcome would have been the same if the genders of erik and christine were switched? I mean lets say roul was another girl, and it was a woman who's face was distorted and she wore a mask to win over this guy who she taught how to sing. it would be odd but interesting to think about.

Hm.... that would be interesting, but methinks I see a slight problem: Christine, as a guy (other than the whole name issue) probably wouldn't be so dang wishy washy. S/he'd likely either only show pity for the phantom, but I doubt he'd be able to do the same part.

You get my drift?

I just pictured a female phantom doing a vampire hiss. And getting in a catfight with Raoulette.

I've wondered this before too.

However, it'd mean Chris(tine) would be crying on the shoulder of Raoulette. I just can't see that working out without being incredibly laughable. However, I can see the Chris/Erikette thing working out somewhat similar.

The only thing is that Chris would have to be a very sensually stimulated male instead of a visually stimulated one. Females are technically much more in tune with other senses such as sound and touch than males are as a rule.

I have a feeling as a male Christine would just suck HARD. She's already an iffy female, and she'd be even less likeable as a he.

I think all in all, the roles are so specific and important that it just wouldn't work the same with different genders.

It's interesting to contemplate.

Since we are assuming that Chris(tine)'s place in society would not be any different than female Christine's, then that would make Erik(a) a much easier candidate for marriage. However, depending on how posh and socially adept Chris(tine) is, I doubt he would want a criminal for a wife no matter what she has done for him since women were supposed to be the paramount of virtue and I doubt Erik(a) would conform to the female roles that were expected of a woman in the nineteenth century. Already with a stigma, that wouldn't prevent him from being courteous to her (if he's a gentleman), but I doubt he would view her as wife material. She would be a bad wife for any man climbing the social ladder. So Chris(tine) would be placed in the same situation as Raoul was: does he want a wife he loves (although questionably in the case of Erik(a)) or does he want a wife who will help him rise to the top?

The case of Raoul(le? No idea how to feminize that), I suspect that as the daughter/sister of a Comte, she would have a significant dowry and prerequisites that would been to be fulfilled before Chris(tine) could even look at her. I doubt Comte Philippe would allow his sister to be handed over to a boy from the Opera with no name and no money, so that would be another complication that would arise. However, Raoul(la?) would be the best of the two, as she has status and money, which would be the most advantageous situation.

I think, the story wouldn't work.

Well... It could work, but it just wouldn't be as good.

Hehe. I was just thinking this a while ago.

You would not believe how many people have written fanfics like that. Go stroll through fanfiction.net.

Oh, I've been in enough different fandoms to know that anything is possible. ANYTHING. Once you've seen the Harry Potter ships and the InuYasha alternate universes, the gender switching really doesn't shock me.

A lot of things in fanfic have ceased to shock me. The only thing about gender switching in fanfic that shocks me is how much of it there is and how poorly written it all is. I haven't found one that's suitable to read, as is the case with most fanfics.

I have always thought of that... but the thing is most of the song would be changed if you were doing it musical or movie form. Past the point of no return would be really odd...and same with the Phantom of the Opera.
But it would be cool and weird. Still it would be like Erika and Christopher or Chris and Raoul well what you guys said. Still it would make everything more complicated...

Well, for one, I think that a female Phantom would have much more to deal with than Erik. Because in that society, women were of a very low class to begin with, and many were valued on either looks or wealth. Because of this, the Phantomess would have had neither, and therefore, a much more difficult time with this.

Besides, it was unheard of for a woman to begin the courting and all that stuff. And I doubt she'd be very feminine at all; she'd probably wear pants or something to the effect of Madame Giry's outfit in the movie. Something she could easily move in. And would wear a wig as well, due to the whole issue of not having hair.
