How do you get rid of them?

Something randomly started installing things on my computer -again- and now I'm flooded with popups, and IE shuts down randomly every few minutes.

I have no idea where they came from, or how to get rid of them.

I've tried uninstalling everything that could be causing this, but when I restart my computer, it's re-installed!

:cries:

I really don't know what to do, and I don't want to lose another computer! I just got this one in April, and I have no idea what the problem is!

AdAware and Spybot: SEarch and destroy. Because it sounds like you have spyware.

I hear google toolbar works well on regular popups.

Maybe using Opera would help? There's a function that can stop pop-ups. 3nodding

Get it at http://www.downloads.com/

T-T

Those cost money...

It's also highlighting words with links to dictionary.com, and stuff...

O_o

I don't want to kill the popups, I want to get rid of the root of the problem alltogether.. is there any way to do that for -free-? I get paid almost minimun wage. I can't afford $30. sad

I think you're looking at the stuff for members-only features that aren't that big of a deal.
AdAware = free.

I'm pretty sure spybot is, as well, but I don't have that link.

Get Mozilla Firefox, or I'll kick you.

I got spyware just by using IE for a short time.

Oh and, Mozilla Firefox blocks all unnecessary popups.

*sigh*

Well, I've only got one popup when I load IE instead of a dozen, but there's still random glowey 'sponsored links' on random words, and 'Begin2Search.com' toolbar that I can't figure out how to get rid of...

...any ideas?

Use the built-in updater to update the reference file. It'll probably double what you'll find. (mine found nothing, then I updated and scanned again, and I got a couple hundred--my reference file was about a week old eek ) I remember that sponsored link one. (by description of stuff it found, at least) It only found it after I updated.

It asked to update when i first opened it... it said it was two weeks old. :\ It's says there's no updates available now.

I currently have the latest definition thing, and it's from August 30. Did you get the SE version? (newest version, may be that updates aren't coming through for older ones) If you can't get it, I can send you the definition file.

And the name of the definition file? It's listed several places, easiest is probably the main screen thing.

OK, if the definitions file is not SE1R6 30.08.2004, download this file and extract the file to the AdAware folder. Just overwrite the old one. Then restart AdAware, and you're all set. (I had to manually install this one, but I got it the day it came out, so I had assumed that they just hadn't updated the update server things)
