There are midrashim that there is the "Satan", his name litteraly means: "The hinderer". He is named properly, because that's what he was created for. Yes, he was a creation of G-d, and he still does G-d's bidding. He is NOT a rebellious angel or anything of the sort. How such a idea could EVER come to be is simply outrageous! An angel is a pure spirit, it cannot rebel! (Hoestly, where do they come up with those things??).
So why did G-d create the Hinderer? To test us. He is still doing his job, and I must say, is doing it well xd .
Probably we could define him as part of the consiousness of mandkind, or the King of yetzer hara (=evil inclination). There are midrashim that tell stories of how G-d dissproved "Satan" many times, as Satan was constantly trying to find faults in bnei yisrael. G-d showed him each time how bnei yisrael are still worthy of being saved. I guess Satan doesn't exist as the christians think he does, he wasn't meant to be evil, rather meant as a test for man, to hold him back from working G-d, and if man can stand the test, he proves his loyalty to G-d.
A note: The satan does NOT give tests to man that he cannot stand pass. G-d isn't that mean teacher that gives you that pop-quiz where your score is hardly even two digits. However, if man were to bring something upon himself (use your imagination), in that case, that isn't the Satan leading him, that was simply his choosing to listen to the satan untill he walked himself into a corner. You can only make so many mistakes until you actually get stuck (its like chess xd ).
