This Celluloid Nightmare

PostPosted: Tue Jun 06, 2006 2:51 am

After placing a call, and getting a name and address, Theif found himself standing outside the Karlet man's house...or, mansion, rather. For a second, he wondered if he'd end up standing outside, staring. Theif generally didn't like intruding upon other people's lives--or going to big, expensive looking places--but this was for Kilayla, so...

...he took a deep breath and pressed on. Just like any other person would, he found his way in without trouble. Or maybe it was his improper upbringing that allowed him to pass into the house without assistance the way he did. In any case, he wound up inside the house.

Theif lowered his head as he walked down one long, silent corridor. His arms were raised slightly from his sides, as he made careful quiet steps. He wondered how many people must live in a place this size. He never really did like being in mansions. Too many doors, too many places for people to hide.

"Hello?" he called tentively.

The corridor, unbeknownst to the stranger, led towards the back of the house and toward the room that housed the indoor pool. In fact, one curious Karlet critter just happened to be coming out of that room, and stopped short at the sight of someone new wandering down the darkened hallway.

The critter went into a mild panic and ducked back into the pool room. "Kaaaleb! Haaana! Soooco!" it wailed, "is a boogie monster in da hall!"

Three heads looked up at once. Hana, the tiger girl, and Kaleb, the teenager with canine accessories, were in the pool giving the youngest of the Karlets swimming lessons. Soco was sitting off to the side, out of the splash zone, and reading a book.

Kaleb climbed out of the pool and Soco set his book aside, and they approached the doorway together. Kaleb was the first to stick his head out the door while Soco flipped the lightswitch. The light revealed the true identity of the supposed "boogie monster."

"Ah, I thought it might be you," Soco said softly, stepping into the hall and giving a slight bow. "Welcome!"

"Haven't you heard of a doorbell?" Kaleb grumbled, shepharding the bawling brat back to the pool.

At the sight of the boy-maid, Theif felt relieved. He didn't think that he'd stumble upon this many people. His eyes darted around the room, and he took in each face. At the welcome, he smiled gently and bowed back to Soco, winding his tail around his waist. "Thank you," he murmered. At the other pink haired boy's doorbell remark, Theif felt his face heat up. He also took notice of the puppy ears, but pretended not to. He simply lifted his chin and smiled, giving greetings respectively to everyone in the room.

Going on, he said, "Unless you're busy, Mister Soco, I'd like to have a chat with you, or perhaps your Adrian?" He put his hands behind his back, and rocked on his heels, hoping he didn't sound too unfriendly. He smiled brightly to soften the formal statement.

Theif received a few nods and waves as he greeted them. The rest of the Karlet crew, many of which were still in the pool, sat and gawked at this new person who had wandered into their midst.

Soco inclined his head. "Of course. I'm sure Mr. Karlet is working upstairs. He informed me that you were coming today. This way, please." He motioned to the door and led Theif back out into the hall, closing the door to the pool room behind them. "I apologize for Kaleb's rashness," he said, though his voice revealed a vague sense of amusement. "He doesn't always remember his manners, and is quite impatient as it is."

"Oh, no, no problem at all!" Theif smiled graciously, nodding, trying his best not to reguard Soco warily. He had no reason to mistrust Soco, but ...this was about Kilayla, and he thought of Kilayla as his precious little girl. One couldn't be too careful about that, could one? Theif shook his head, trying to clear the mistrustful thoughts from his head.

He followed Soco up the stairs and after a second realized he was staring. He randomly felt the urge to bite one of Soco's bunny ears. "So, you're the maid?"

Soco led Theif up to the second floor, his heels clicking against the clean granite steps. The house -- from the pool room, to the entrance hall, to the second floor -- was immaculate. The brass fixtures along the walls shone, and not a speck of dust was to be found on any painting, vase, or handrail.

Soco smiled in amusement at the question. "Yes, that's one of my various titles," he replied politely. "I also serve as a butler, librarian, tutor, and babysitter."

Theif felt a sudden flash of hope. Soco was a tutor? Go figure. "Hm," Theif mused aloud. "It's very nice in here."

After a breif silence he added, "You have a lot of titles...you say that you help as a tutor? Is it very busy work, all the things that you do? Or do you ever have time for yourself?" He averted his eyes again, feeling the ear-biteyness again. He uncurled his tail from around his waist and curled it down one leg.

(( No problem. :3 It happens. ))

Soco took Theif's first comment to be a compliment, feeling a brief surge of pride that his work was appreciated by someone who wasn't a mansion resident.

"Oh, yes, I'm usually quite busy," he replied. "But I do often find time for myself, in which I usually find some other duty to keep myself preoccupied and to add on another title. Really, I perform the duties out of necessity: if Mr. Karlet and the other teenagers are out, I take care of the little ones so that they don't hurt themselves or each other. If the library is looking cluttered, I rearrange the books."

He stopped at a door at the end of the hall. "One moment, please," he said before rapping his knuckles against the wood. There was no response, so he knocked once more before trying the handle. It turned in his hand, and he opened it enough to peer into the room.

Adrian was slumped over a pile of paperwork on top of his desk, and he didn't appear to be conscious.

Soco stepped inside and gave the young man a nudge. "Mr. Adrian?"

"Ngh... dun wanna go school..."

"Mr. Adrian. You've a visitor."

"Tell Raven to deal with him..."

Soco gave him another nudge. "Adrian."

The man startled awake and glanced around the room through bleary eyes. "Huh?"

"A visitor for you, sir," Soco said, gesturing to the door.

"Oh, right... Guess I shouldn't receive him in my bedroom..."

"I don't believe that would be wise until after you get to know each other, sir."

Adrian raised an eyebrow at him. Soco just smiled back. "I'll meet him in the front parlor in a minute," Adrian finally said.

Soco bowed and let himself out of the room, closing the door behind him. "Mr. Karlet will just be another moment. Would you follow me downstairs, please?"

Theif heard a comment that made his face warm before Soco appeared again before him. He pretended not to have heard it.

Theif sighed as he followed Soco down the stairs again, tugging at the pink ribbon in his hair. He took it off and stuffed it into a pocket."Your Adrian Karlet sounds young to have all these little ones around," he mumbled. For some reason he felt kind of nervous to meet Karlet. He tugged at the skirt he was wearing, wishing it were longer, or that he'd worn a pair of pants instead. And a shirt with sleeves. Theif was happy he was wearing his gloves, though, or he'd feel naked.

...not that naked was a bad thing, when he was at home, or it was for a photo.

Theif unwound his tail from his leg, and wrapped it up and accross his chest. That's when he relized he was fidgiting way too much, so he stopped as they came to the foot of the stairs.

Soco smiled and stifled a soft chuckle. "I suppose he is," he replied. "To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure of his exact age. He's never said, and I've never had reason to ask."

He led Theif to the right of the stairs and into the front room, gesturing to the couches and chairs there. "May I offer you something to drink while you're waiting?"

Theif sat on a couch, smoothing his skirt down so his bear bottom didn't make contact with the seat, and crossed his legs. He rested his tail across his lap.

"Actually, unless you have something more important to attend to, I'd like it if you'd wait and talk with me, Mister Soco."

Theif smiled up at the boy-maid. He wanted to know more about him than his jobs around his home.

"Certainly," Soco said with a bow. He settled into a chair across from Theif, smoothing his own skirt before folding his hands in his lap. He held his head at an angle, as if waiting for the man's next question.

Theif looked into Soco's eyes for as long as he thought would make him uncomfortable. "Well," he said after a long, silent moment, "what do you know about me?" It was more a question to himself than to Soco. "You know I am Kilayla's guardian. You know that I love her very much? I'm sure that explains why I'd like to know you."

Theif had not looked away from Soco's eyes, nor had he blinked. He gave a gentle smile, which he usually softened further by lowering his eyes, but at this moment would not do. "Tell me about yourself, lovely. Not...not what you do around here," Theif gestured with one had vaguely, sitting up as straight as the chair allowed {speaking this way to Soco was making him forget his apprehension about meeting the Karlet man completely}, "but what you like to do. What are your hobbies?"

Soco stared back, expression unwavering as he tried to consider the intent behind Theif's questions. To him, they seemed a little odd, and he let this thought hover just outside his consciousness.

"I honestly don't know much about you, sir," he replied to the first question. "I do know that you're a guardian, and I'm sure you love your Kilayla as much as Mr. Karlet loves his kids."

Soco relaxed a little, unfolding his hands. "I don't have that many hobbies," he admitted. "I like to read. I don't seem to have any talent for music, but I do like to try and poke at the piano." He averted his eyes, glancing upwards as if trying to remember what other things he enjoyed doing. "I do go out to clubs from time to time, mostly to dance and to meet other people. I don't drink, nor do I do drugs. Other than that... I can't think of any other hobbies."

"Hm," Theif murmered, relaxing back into his seat and casting his gaze to the side.

Soco seemed like a nice sort. And had he said he poked at the piano? Kilayla had only recently told him of her interest in learning to play that particular instrument. And Theif still hadn't hired a new tutor to replace the one that she'd gotten rid of.

Perhaps he could ask Karlet...?

"No, it's okay, you don't have to think of anything else. I just kind of...wanted to get a feel of you -- for you, I mean." Theif's eyes dashed to Soco's face, then away again. He hadn't meant to say that. As he felt his face warm, Theif combed his bangs down over his eyes with his fingers and lowered his head.
