Obviously we all have our own personal opinions on various issues. Abortion. Birth control. Government involvement in private life. Gun control. Assisted suicide. Violence in video games. Homeless people. The list goes on.
But what would ERIK, our beloved Phantom, think of all this? Where would he fall on this "this is right, this is wrong" spectrum?
I'm just kind of curious to know. Because delving into Erik's mind is always fun.
Keeping in mind, boys and girls, that this is a theoretical post about what we believe a fictional character thinks on The Issues. It can't get much less personal. Keep that in mind. And remember this is all in good fun, talking about a character we all love.
So just pick an Issue and tell us what you think Erik's stance on it would be, and why.

I don't know about the other things, but for some reason I think Erik would be completely FOR assisted suicide. Something tells me he'd be very liberal, considering he's hardly had contact with people when they weren't beating or somehow degrading him, and wouldn't be so conforming to their ideas about society.

Erik might be for abortion, considering how his mother hated him and so on. I'm sure that now that they can detect deformities and so on, the mother might want an abortion. He'd be all up on that.

Erik on Abortion: Against.
I say this because of the "If the baby is deformed/retarded/has some other problem I shouldn't have to keep it" arguement. Since Erik *is* deformed, and from Leroux, ALW, and Kay's accounts he didn't have the most loving mother, he would see the deformed argument as too close for comfort. A "that could have been me" moment, if you will.

Erik on Suicide, assisted or unassisted: Against.
I think if anyone has had a reason to kill themselves it would be Erik. Pre-Christine. And that's just based off of the history we know of him from Leroux. He hasn't lived a happy or easy life. But he escapes death time and time again, purposefully. And he avoids suicidal behavior, there are plenty of things under the Opera that could kill a man simply and quickly, from the Shade to the torture chamber.
And then he doesn't let Raoul essentially kill himself when they're at Perros. Because Raoul's actions, which had the Phantom not brought him inside the church, could easily have lead to serious illness or worse. This is his *rival*, and Erik knows it, but he's not going to let the man take the easy way out of the game.

I think he probably WOULD have killed himself but was too proud and stubborn. But I think he would realize that most people are not that strong-willed, and would have sympathy on them and wish them to have the right to die.

I don't think he'd have much of an opinoin on anything considering he lacks a moral conscience.

He doesn't really count himself among the human race, so he probably wouldn't care much about what they did as long as it didn't intrude upon his life. I think he would be like "Why should I care about the society that shunned me because of the way I was born? It is no concern of mine what they chose to do to themselves and to one another."

Abortion: For. Well, I'm basing this off of Kay's novel, as he hates the doctor that saves his life. Gun control: I'm guessing he'd not want guns around, as that might interfere with his nifty mirror tricks and sword-slashing idiom. ^^ Gay marriage: he wouldn't care, as long as he could still pursue Christine. Homeless people: no sympathy whatsoever. He runs away and manages to get taken in by gypsys (though I'm quite sure he wasn't to thrilled with this) then manages to make a home for himself beneath the Opera house. He'd probably say "If they just tried...actually, I'm going to kill anyone who comes to live under the Opera, as that is MY thing..." Euthanasia: All for it. It just seems like he'd be for everything that can kill those whos lives would be miserable.

Personally I think Erik would be a liberal. I think he would be for abortion considering that he hates existing in a world that is so cruel to him, and that he would be in favor of assisted suicide since he almost let Christine kill him by blowing up the opera house when she was unsure wheter to turn the scorpion or the grasshopper. And I think he at least wouldn't be against gay marriage, but since there were no similar issues even lightly adressed in the book (considering the time it was written) I really couldn't say.

I would see him as being against abortion as well. I think in one of the older movies, he was deforemed because of some sort of abortion drug that didn't work properly. Can't remember which version.. there's so many and I haven't actually seen those o_-;;

Because he's in love with Christine, and way back then, it would be looked down upon for a pretty young girl to be with a deformed, older man. Heck, it would still be looked down upon. He'd probably sympathize with them. Plus, he doesn't strike me as a "OMG GAY HOMOFAGS ALL GOES TO H3LL BECASE TEHY ARE TEH SICK!!11!!!!" type. (Not to offend anyone who is against gay marriage. Unless your only reason is because it seems disgusting to you. Then I'm offending you.)

Abortion: For. Especially if the unborn child is deformed, retarded, or with some other problem. Birth control: For. Because he's French, and the French are very romantic (stereotype mrgreen ) Government involvement in private life: Against. Or else he wouldn't have been able to live without a social security number all those years. Gun control: For. Only because he probably thinks other people would shoot at him (*cough*Raoul*cough*) Assisted suicide: For. Kay's Erik proved that easy enough. Violence in video games: Probably against video games in general. Homeless people: Probably against. Because homeless people sit around and do nothing all day.
