biggrin Hellow Jrocker fans!!! Out of nowhere I decided to do this only because I thought there was not enough topics to discuss. I'm not at all sure if there is a topic discussing this matter but oh well. Here I hope for you all to share how you got into Jrock. I hope not to see any mean comments thrown at eachother. So please play nice kids. biggrin
4laugh Alright "How did you get into Jrock?" Well I got into it through anime and games. I am sure I'm not the only one who fell into the spider web that we call Jrock that way. The first song I heard was Beast Blood. I thought it was so cool and so naturally my first Jrock obbsession was Malice Mizer and the Dir en Grey. Well that is all I will say for I wish to hear you all out instead. So have fun!!! 4laugh

My friend calls me one day and tells me she is into this thing she calls J-rock. I come over, she has a wallpaper of Vanilla Gackt, and I'm dropping my jaw and just kind of staring. "...That's not a DUDE! Are you blind???"(me) Marika-chan: "Yes it is!! And I'll teach you to love him~! -or else-" Me: "O.o"
A couple of days later... Me: "OMG I LOVE GACKT I LOVE VANILLA I LOVE HIS FACE AND HIS HAIR AND HIS VOICE AND HIS MUSIC AND EVERYTHING ELSE I CAN'T THINK OF RIGHT NOW~!!!!" In other words, Gackt was the first person I had ever loved without ever meeting him. Then came Malice Mizer, then Dir en Grey, and so on and so on... It's like a drug. O.o

I started liking it because I was talking about Malice Mizer with one of my friends. Then out of nowhere, I was bored, and had limewire, so I start randomly downloading songs like crazy. I look up pics, then boom, for some reason there are random Gazette pictures there. Itnerested, i download them. Now, I mainly listen to Antic Cafe ((I dont know why .. Malice Mizer and Moi Dix Mois will always have my heart heart )). the people from Jrock that got me into liking it were:: Kyo, Klaha, Mana, Kanon, Reita. ^_^ First it was just for the visual candy I was getting. and now I couldn't care ^^ the music is just excellent.

Yu-Gi-Oh! <__< *admits to still loving that show* <__< Only the Japanese version though... >__< The Americans slaughtered it. =/ I mean... one second Yami is standing there wallowing in his own sorrow... then he's on the ground! =/ They cut out the part where Jounouchi punches him. Wtf? =/ Was that too violent for America? rofl <__< And the episode where Bakura stabs his hand on the top of the castle when Ryou is all trying to take control and junk. <__< I don't know HOW they showed the whole last season on TV then. =/ Cause like... yeah... it had alot of slightly violent parts too. <__< But whatever... their english voices grate on my nerves anyways. XD They made Yuugi sound effing weird. >< And Bakura.. <__< Okay I could see him having a British accent while being "Yami Bakura"... <__ But Theif King Bakura? >< Dude, an Egyptian with a British accent? XD Wtf? <__< -cough- Anyways. XD Yes... Jrock. Let's seeeeee... well, It started from Anime basically. Long, long looooong ago during the times of Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon. My best friend (Sassami) and I were little and all kinds of Sailor Moon crazy. XD In like... 6th Grade I think it was... we started watching Tenchi Muyo, and we liked the music to it. So we bought Soundtracks and such and learned about artists such as Orikasa Ai. Then we started listening to Artists from other Anime's we watched. (Megumi Hayashibara, Nanase Aikawa, Ayumi Hamasaki... ppl like that.) We were just starting to really look into Jpop, when Sassami moved. (To Alabama, now she's in Kansas, and on June 20th she's moving to South Carolina. XD Which is good because it's clooooser. We havent seen each other in like... 4 years... <__<) Anyways! And then there was Matomi (Whom we no longer like. Aka, That one whore, that one b***h. XD To find the full story on that, go here and read the 14 page hate letter we wrote to her, which we got suspended for lol: http://damare.50webs.com ). I never liked the b***h in the first place, but she was Sassami's friend so I befriended her after Sassami moved. Then there was the whole Inuyasha thing. Bought soundtracks to that and such. XD And Makoto (dixieme) often told us about other artists and would burn us CD's (because he's awesome like that). =/ Sadly at that time Ko-kun and I didn't really hang out that much. We just knew each other exsisted and talked once in a while. XD The when Matomi got on my ******** nerves, we had this big a** fight (which still to this day I am still blamed completely for). =/ She even got her little friend to CALL MY FATHER and tell him that Makoto gave me a lapdance during Anime Club. rofl Which I now find really funny. Didnt then though, because I got bitched at for it. o__O I can't believe he actually believed her. Anyways.... ... Then Makoto and I started hanging out more. (<__< I think it might have been Fatal Frame ll that started that. XD It's a very addicting game.) But yes, and during that time we liked the show "Gravitation" (still do! XD We were watching it last night... <__< Pika Pika Shuuuuiiiichiiii) which, as some of you probably already know is about a (bitchy) Romance Novelist and a (idiot) Rock Star. XD So then (of course) we had to buy all the Gravitation Soundtracks. And download songs by Kotani Kinya and Iceman and ppls. So during that time, Makoto and I got more into the bands Makoto had found a long time ago. Mainly Malice Mizer. Then we started looking up info on the members of the bad, downloading everything we could possibly find and wee~... XD Here we are today. Of course, after a while of the Malice Mizer obsessing we started looking up tons of other Visual Kei / Jrock bands. XD And now everytime we find a band we like we automatically have to research them and find out everything about them. XD lol. Yup... <__< Not about to list all the bands we now know and love. XD Already listed them once on the File Sharing thingy. <__< Which I have to update. -cough- o__O I think I got all of that right... <__< I dunno... Did I Makoto? I dun really know that much about how you found all those bands and junk other then A:IY people... <__< So yeah... XD If I got anything wrong on your part..... umm... yeah... XD oops. <___< And Yes, I just told you all my life story. XD And if you actually read all of that.... then you must not have a life. And / or, must not have much of a life if you just wasted PART of your life reading about MY life. ~ rofl ~ rofl ~ rofl ~ rofl ~ rofl ~ rofl ~ rofl ~ rofl ~ rofl ~ rofl

XD Well...around the end of 6th grade my friend Komori asked me if I knew what anime was...and I was like "uuuh" XD So I looked into it..>__> and found out everything I've ever watched was anime. XD Then I started raiding the anime section at blockbuster...lmao. Then I slowly became obsessed with opening and ending songs from animes, like the ones from .Hack//Sign. See-Saw became a big obsession from that show. I still obsess over See-Saw. Their music is just stunning, but anyways. From there found out about more Jpop artists. Such as Ayumi Hamasaki, Nami Amuro and BoA. *nods* But during this time I was a HUGE Anime addict, watching it whenever I got the chance. XD Then somehow I met Misao. *nods* I don't quite remember how...but since we lived like 3 houses away from each other it was bound to happen. XD But then I started borrowing DVD's from her (because she's awesome like that) XD Then she introduced me to A:IY *nods* Best forum site ever. Lol No forum I've been to has had the same atmosphere and succsess(maybe not succsess XD) that that one had. *nods* Except maybe Gaia...but A:IY was better. >__> XD The people I met there told me many things. Expecialy this one girl....I don't remember her name...but She told me about Malice Mizer, Dir en Grey and D'espairs Ray. *nods* I looked them up...thought they were awesome, downloaded a few songs from them. Then I shared my experiences with Misao and Matomi, who was my friend also at the time. *nods* Then we didn't really do much with either...except I became a total Diru fanboy...XD I did a project on them years later. Anyways...I searched up more Jrockers and I was turned onto a Jrock Mp3 rotation site from my friend who introduced me to Malice Mizer. *nods* That site...to this day...is GOD to me. XD Because of that site I've become the Japanese Junkie I am today. I became obsessed with D[Di:] from that site...and so many other japanese bands. Then after Matomi got pissy...Misao and I hung out more...Still not sure if it was Fatal Frame II...it might've been the fact the Matomi was out. o__O but duuude that whole fight between them was intense...>_> because at the time I was friends with both of them...and like...yeah I had to lie to both of them... XD *coughs* >__> I would say how I'd hate matomi to Misao and how crappy Misao was to Matomi. It was painful...but like I didn't flat out say it though...I agreed that they were crappy and s**t...>__> I usually do that when girls rant to me. XD I dunno what to say....>__> Like the other day my friend Audrey was asking me advice on if she what she should do about this guy and s**t...>__> Anyways....XD Misao and I hung out more. We were into Inuyasha before gravitation though...>__> but after the letter thing...came Gravitation and the Yaoi Era. XD Which is still our current obsession. XD but before and during that we downloaded s**t loads of Malice Mizer stuff...we got everything we could. We then eventually did the same with loads of jrock and Visual Kei bands. *nods* And as Misao said whenever we find a new band we research them. ^__^ We find out who they are and that leads to us find more music and videos. Yeah...So thats my story....XD A little long eh? XD> But I think I missed stuff...o__O XD opps lmao

I don't really remember how it started. A lot of different things at once. I had a group of friends who were really into anime at school (cosplay conventions and awards), and they dabbled in Japanese music a bit too. I remember listening to my friend Rei rave about someone called Gackt...
I think however that more goes to my sister for talking about Japan all the time. Don't know why I looked up Gackt on limewire one day... downloaded some concert vids.
What I saw in the concert was so different from what I saw in America. At the time I was on a big gay rights kick and I saw Gackt writhing on the floor with another guy (Vanilla performance)... so different. I fell in love with the bravado; how he didn't seem to care how such a performance would be perceived. (later I learned about cultural differences and fanservice but I believe that I still love him for this.)
After looking into his solo career a bit I decided to look further back and found Malice Mizer pretty quickly. Thanks to limewire I obtained quite a bit of their discography pretty quickly. I also obtained a lot of vids (in the archaic time before youtube.) Again it was the difference that hit me quite hard. No one in America was doing what they were (or had done, I suppose. They were a broken band by the time I became acquainted with them.) The costumes were beautiful, the music was stirring, everyone played their own instruments, and there was no paparazzi to ruin the magic. I discover new things about them still.
That difference (culture, sound, expression) has strengthened my own feelings about wanting to learn about other people/countries/ways of life in the world, which has decided my course of study in college and eventually will lean into my post grad work where I may do anthropological studies of the Japanese music underground.
From Malice Mizer came days when I wanted something new, and from trawling sites about them I learned about related bands (whether in musical style/look/feeling/etc). Kagrra is one of my current favorites. Also Schwarz Stein, Miyavi, Kozi... the usual suspects I suppose, and a few surprises.
I was into Gackt and L'arc for awhile, but the love for them has become normal at this point. I await their new releases but time will tell. (I heard Gackt's new one in an Okonomiyaki restaurant in Shinjuku and had to pretend I didn't know who was singing because it was just... that awful.)
I never really got into Dir En Grey. I downloaded a few songs by them, and never got interested enough to download more. Their look was not spectacular to me either... However, I expect them to blow up even more. I suspect... that they are as they have publically proclaimed, the anti-Malice Mizer. And like anything anti, will garner many fans just for being that. (Think Greenday, any emo band, etc). I feel for the fans who consider themselves true when this begins to happen more in force, and if I offend anyone by being unkind about them and unkind to you because of your love, know that I am bitter about their being the flagship band on a big tour in America, because that will exponentially speed up the process of emo kids falling in love with them because they're... I don't know... punk or against authority or something... I also predict, that their having many bandwagon fans will cause more anti, which will turn into anti-Jrock because of that flagship status. Let's face it, American fans like to hate what's popular, even/especially if they know nothing about it. In this way, DEG will close a lot of doors....[/DEG rant]
Now I'm studying anthropology and International St. in force and listening to music in the background. Good stuff.

The Pillows, through watching FLCL (Best anime ever). xd And then one of my Gaia friends was ranting about Dir En Grey and I ended up looking into them, downloading videos and just loving them. Malice Mizer was also introduced to me by another friend, but I really never got into them.
And Tensai, please don't assume all mainstream bands are emo. Green Day is far from emo. Punk and emo are two TOTALLY DIFFERENT genres of music (IE emo has nothing to do with being anti-establishment, etc.). And being anti is not the American way, they shun those who are different, they only accept whats in and the concept of conformity. Emo is the in-thing. Pretend punk bands like Sum 41 were the inthing before that, and grunge before that. but now everyone is a whiney little emo kid. Everywhere I go, I see kids with the stupid hair over one eye with the bandana around their neck, and all that other crap. As to how a JAPANESE band being in the US will lead to anti j-rock, I don't know, explain that one, I think its the most ridiculous MM-fangirl nonsense I have ever heard. If anything, it will open the doors for more Japanese bands to come over. How do you think the Brits did it? Sent the Beatles over and bam, The British Invasion. Sure Japanese bands have been here before, but Dir En Grey will probably lead to the Japanese Invasion and we'll see more and more bands from the land of the rising sun. Dir En Grey won't attract emos, just an army of goth-wannabees (Aka mallgoths, poser goths, etc). Hence their shirts being sold at Hot Topic. And that makes me sad, cuz I hate mallgoths and Hot Topic.
