Milele slunk through the undergrowth, nervously glancing over her shoulder every few seconds running from the shadows that she was sure were persuing her. The same huge mammoths that had trampled her parents.
She had been running "for her life" for the better part of a week now. She was exhausted, half-starved, and would soon die of thirst if she couldn't find water soon. But she didn't dare sleep, didn't dare stop for long because the shadows surely weren't far behind her.
Hearing a noise up ahead, she crouched down deeper in the grass, laying as still as possible, while still glancing behind her from time to time. A lone defassa (waterbuck) had gotten lost from his herd. They'd left while he was asleep, and no matter how hard he'd tried, he hadn't been able to catch up with them yet. He knew how dangerous it was to travel alone, but he hadn't been given a choice. So he forged on, praying that he'd be safe enough until he could rejoin the herd.
He'd stopped to get a drink of water, from the small stream trickling down from the nearby mountains, when he heard a frantic sound in the grass, coming towards him. Whatever it was, wasn't being stealthy or quiet at all, so Chipo knew that it couldn't be a predator..., but that still didn't mean that he was safe. He backed up and crouched down behind a huge rock, waiting to see what it was, hoping that the long shadows from the setting sun would hide him well enough.
Not too far away from him, a half-starved and frantic, but beautifull lion cub staggered into the shorter grass, and then dropped down low to the ground, nervously looking around herself in all directions. She looked scared of her own shadow and near death... the poor thing. Pity overrode caution and the defassa carefully inched out from behind his rock, wary, but more worried about startling the spooked creature.
"Hello there, little one. Don't worry, I won't hurt you." "Who are you... what do you want," she asked nervously, her eyes wide with fear. "Nothing. I don't want anything, but you looked parched and I know that there is cool refreshing water over there running through the grass." Chipo indicated with his snout where the stream was. Her eyes lit up and darted the way that he motioned, then back behind her. The allure of the water was too much and she briefly threw caution to the wind and dashed for the stream, finding a place where she could hide while still getting a drink. Glad that he'd done a good deed for the day, but also knowing that where there were lion cubs, there would also be lions, he took one last look at the cub. Then, before her attention could return to him, Chipo darted off into the Savannah, both for safety and to try to locate his herd. With her belly full of water, Milele dozed briefly, against her better judgement, her exhaustion making the decision for her. Luckily, she was hidden by the lee of the stone.

Tandabui made his way along the mountain paths, if you could call them that, picking his way along carefully. Wouldn't do him or the tribe any good if he fell and injured himself, though no one would notice probably for at least several hours. But that was the risk he took for slinking off when it was still fairly light outside. He wanted to hunt and not be told to get out of the way or stay in a safe place. That and he wanted to impress Siri with a kill all on his own. But it was difficult and he narrowed his eyes, looking vaguely unsure. It was one thing to tell oneself that one was going to hunt alone, quite different to actually DO it. The bright light hurt his sensitive eyes and he wondered how those of the other clan did it. Surely they were insane to come out at this time of day! He looked around, his keen nose lifted up to sniff the air for any trace of prey. **************************************** Several hours later, the tired juvenile was pretty proud of himself, dragging the body of a young zebra with him. Granted, it wasn't that big but he had done it all on his own! He was extremely tired though and parched beyond reason. Trotting to where he knew was a small stream where he could allay his thirst and then make his way back to his pride, he dipped his head to drink. 'Siri's going to be so impressed! I just know it!' Gulping down water, his entire muzzle drenched, he looked up and froze, seeing another lion in front of him. She didn't look familiar, but she didn't look like someone from the Mwezi tribe either. Carefully lifting his muzzle from the water, droplets still dripping from his jaw, he tilted his head to one side. She didn't look so good.... "Hey, are you okay? Are you dead?" He sure hoped not , but it wouldn't be the first time one of theirs had slept forever.

Hearing the voice roused Milele from her deep slumber. "What? Where? Who?" With wild eyes she quickly glanced around her, trying to figure out where she was and how far behind her stalkers might be. She had fallen more deeply asleep than she'd ever meant to and she was afraid that she'd lost her long fought lead against the mastadons. While assessing that she couldn't feel the ground trembling, she took a moment to check out the dark pelted lion in front of her, sniffing the air. He didn't seem threatening, and he really seemed concerned for her. He reminded her of the other lion and his cub that she'd met a few days before, but she hadn't wanted to impose and so she'd run off to keep from getting them involved. It seemed all she did was run these days.
Her poor body was still weak from heat stroke and lack of nourishment and, though try as she might, it was still a struggle to keep her head up. She didn't want to show any weakness in front of this other lion, but her body wasn't willing to push any further. Her front legs wobbled and then buckled underneath her. With a whimper, she dropped her weary head onto her front paws.
"I'm not dead, but if I can't get moving soon, they'll catch me... and then I will be. "Whoever you are, you seem nice, but please don't get involved with me. I don't want anyone else to get hurt!" Tears filled her eyes, and she hid her snout under her paws to keep the other lion from seeing her further weakness.

After a few moments, Milele noticed that the other cub wasn't leaving. she sniffled back her tears and looked up at him in surprise. She'd thought for sure that he'd leave her like everyone else had.

Tanda titled his head to one side, surveying the other cub. He wasn't very old or very experienced but even he could tell she was in bad shape. Looking back at his first solo kill, his nose twitched. He had wanted to bring it back to Siri to show off his efforts but he was pretty sure the older lion would understand that this cub needed it more. Nudging the young zebra at the female, he dipped his head. "Here, you better eat something. You look like you're starved and out here, that could mean the end of you."

Milele stared at Tandabui in shock, almost as if his words hadn't made any sense... but the smell of freshly killed meat was overwhelming her fears.
She glanced over her shoulder in fear, one more time, "Are you sure?" Seeing that he'd made up his mind, Milele crept forward, keeping low to the ground and sniffed the carcass. "Would you please stand watch for me while I eat so the great huge shadows won't sneak up on me and catch me unawares?"
Without even waiting for a response, she ripped a huge chunk of flesh off the dead zebra and started eating it ravenously.

"Ummm, sure." He didn't know what she was so afraid of and he didn't see any great shadows but he'd keep watch while she ate if she wanted him to. "Just dig right in. Go for that chunk on the haunch. It's the best part."
He looked kind of embarassed, scratching at his cheek with a paw before sitting down and looking around alertly. "So, what kind of shadows are these to make you so afraid?"

At his suggestion, she eyed the haunch and then tore a huge chunk out of it and scarfed it down. Around mouthfuls of food, she responded,"That was good!"
*munch*
"Thank you!"
"The shadows that trampled my tribe and my parents." *crunch* "Mommy always made me sleep in the trees, and one night, these huge monsters came stampeding through the place where the tribe had camped for the night. They were a million feet tall with scary long teeth and feet as huge as the fattest tree. They made these deafening braying noises with their long noses."
*chew chew*
"The tribe heard them coming, and the chief worked to help all of the mothers who had just had babies, try to collect their young and get them out of harms way... but they weren't quick enough. The noise was so loud that it startled me out of the tree and the dark beasts were so loud that I just started running, all the time they were right on my tail, trampling everything in their path. Trees, rocks, bushes... everything was crushed."
*gulp*
"I ran and ran and ran, always looking over my shoulder to see them still chasing me. I don't know how long I ran and how long they trampled everything behind me. I think I've outrun them for now, but when I go to sleep, it's like I can still hear the horrible noise they make with their long noses and the sounds of my tribe getting crushed under the horrible feet of the monsters." A shiver ran up her spine and she shivered involuntarily.
"You can see why that would scare anyone!"

"Wow!" He watched her eat like she hadn't touched food in days, which he guessed she hadn't. She looked kind of thin and haggard and he could swear he could see her ribs through her fur, dark as it was.
He listened thoughtfully, enraptured by her story. "They sound like the big-horns. I've heard the adults talk about them sometimes. You're luicky to not be trampled. They have no minds and seem to just run whenever anything spooks them. Must have been bad if they could take out an entire tribe." He paused, sniffing the wind for a bit. He was on guard after all.....
"So, you don't have a home to go back to?" He knew loneliness, his parents were gone too but he had his tribe, the strongest tribe ever. He puffed his chest out a bit before he looked at the female cub. "Do you want to maybe come back with me and see if my tribe would take you in? You'd fit right in, I think." Her dark fur was a marking of the favor given by the night and moon. Surely this was a sign that she was meant to be here!

She stopped chewing to look at the other cub in a new light.
"Yeah, those Longhorns sound like what trampled by tribe. You know so much!" She took a deep breath, trying to calm her quickly beating heart and digesting what the other cub told her. Especially the part about finding a new tribe that would adopt her. She'd felt so alone for long, and she was so tired of running.
"If you think that your tribe would adopt me, I would like to meet them. I'm awfully lonely, and I hadn't even dared to think that another tribe would have me. But I don't want them to accept me if the Longhorns are still chasing me. I don't want your tribe to be hurt too."
Her shrivelled belly was getting full and she was slowing down as she tore meat off the bones.

"Ausi'jabali, our Maliki, will take you in! I just know he will. And if he doesn't Siri'bakunja, our Kahini, will sponsor you. He's the best! The gods speak directly to him and he's just...cool!" It was extremely obvious that Tanda had a huge case of hero worship when it came to the Kahini.
"And our tribe is very strong! We wouldn't be afraid of some longhorns, no matter how many there were!"

The way the other cub spoke of the tribe elders really inspired Milele with courage to give it a try.
"Wow! If they're that awesome, then we should all be really safe. I'd like to give it a try, if you'll introduce me to them. Oh, by the way, my name in Milele. I'm sorry I didn't introduce myself at first."
Her belly was full, and the female cub looked down at the carcass and realized that she'd eaten almost half of it alone... but her belly felt so full and happy for the first time in a long time. She looked back up at her new friend with a chagrined look on her face.
"I'm sorry. I ate most of your kill. I feel really bad and here you were being so nice to me. Do you want me to try and help you get another that you can take back to the tribe?"

"They are awesome! They're the best tribe leaders ever! Much better than that other tribe." He gave a small disparaging snort before he gave a small bow, dipping his head.
"Nice to meet you, Milele. My name is Tandabui but you can call me Tanda." He gave a charming little grin before leaning forward to rub noses in a sign of greeting.
He gave a little snort of laughter at her embarassment, waving his paw. "No matter. I can always find more. I'm trying to be a good hunter for my tribe and I need the practice anyway!" His head rose sharply though and he sniffed the wind excitedly.
"Ooooh, you must be a lucky charm! I think I smell something!"

Milele felt a good feeling stir inside her as Tandabui rubbed noses with her. She was so thankful to have found such a nice cub. She was really looking forward to belonging to a tribe with such nice lions in it!
She almost argued with him over being a good luck charm, she had been feeling anything BUT lucky, but she was caught up in his excitement. She turned her nose into the air, trying to mimic him. She could smell something, but it was an unknown scent to her.
"What? What do you smell?" She'd never been allowed to hunt yet, since her mother had thought that she was too young and hadn't yet let her accompany the other lionesses on their hunts.

His eyes sparkled as he sniffed more, stretchng his neck out and the tip of his tongue poked out as if he could taste the scent more than smell it. He turned back towards Milele, a wide grin on hs face as his paws smacked on the ground, stirring up small puffs of dust. "It's antelope! It has that grass-musk smell and there's only a small group of them....I think."
"Come on, let's go!" His excitement was contagious as he craned his neck in the direction of the smell. Siri would like antelope better than zebra anyway!
