Konnichiwa Minasan (hello everyone),

Just wondering if you knew anything on the new PS3? Do you think it'll be able to play PS1 & PS2 games? I've heard it will have some fierce competition with the new Nintendo system (also backwards compatible)?

What do you guys think? Will you be updating to any of these systems? Why or why not?

I will be getting a PS3. From what I heard it will be backwards compatible with PS2, and have a ROM type setting for the PS1 games. Also it will be making use of blu ray discs, what people are arguably are saying is the next form of media storage.

I'm mostly getting it for games like FFXIII, Devil May Cry 4 and others. It looks wicked sweet.

Doesn't seem to be any more new info on the PS3 other than what we heard at E3.

Basic specs:
  • To use a Blu-Ray drive and Blu-Ray disks.
  • To be backwards compatible with PS2 and PS1 games.
  • To have free online.
  • Due out November 11 (or 17, don't remember).
  • To come in two packages. $500 with a 20GB harddrive, and a few less features than its $600 counterpart which will feature a 60GB harddrive.
  • To be compatible with HDD television sets.
  • To use a motion sensor controller with six degrees of motion tilt.
  • Not using rumble in its controller.

It's main competition (well, in Japan at the very least) is the Nintendo Wii because of Wii's innovations and lower price range. In America, it'll most likely compete with the X-Box 360 in terms of pure power. However, in terms of sales, both the 360 and PS3 face competition with the Wii, and both Sony and Microsoft have endorsed buying their respective systems and the Wii. This was most likely done because Nintendo has told they do not want to be in direct competition with Sony and Microsoft.

As for my personal interests. I'm pre-ordering a Wii, simple as that. I'll end up picking up a 360 sometime early/mid 2007, and a PS3 whenever the price drops.

Nintendo has just all-around impressed me with its new system, and Super Smash Brothers: Brawl was the selling point for me. 360 has a few games I want, and with the lower price, I'm more opt to get that first than the PS3, which, so far, only has two games I really want.

So you're looking at PS3 for the games rather than graphics or both? How do blu ray disks work to save space? Are they just like another harddrive to attach in addition to whatever the console saves??

Do you have any loyalty to any company or just buy all the systems and alternate? I used to be all about Nintendo, though I think they got too techy for me at one point. I am not common sense smart with video games, and am easily frightened, so not all the games being produced on systems worked well for me. I now have just an N64, which I traded in once to Gamestop for a Gameboy Advance SP, and then I traded all that in for the N64 again. I couldn't help the loyalties I had growing up as a kid with Nintendo 64.. but now I'm looking into Playstation for DDR, 007 games, and Saiyuki games. So, I guess it does depend on the priceless-ness for me on the games.. maybe I am just too cheap to buy a lot, but from the sampling I get from my friend, I do enjoy Donkey Konga on occasion and some RPG on X-box.. but there are so many games I am always confused..

I might get a PS3, but not right away. Probably the middle of next year.

I'll end up getting a PS3 when two things happen.

1) When I can walk into Costco or Gamestop or some other place that'd sell them and find one there without having to pre-order or reserve or whatnot.

2) When I have $600 to spare for a new system. This actually isn't as unfeasable as it might sound, becuase I have a summer job already.

When those two things happen, I'll get a PS3.

On that note, in case I got a summer job at a Comics and Cards place near where I live. Huzzah!

Well, if I had to choose a loyalty, it'd be Nintendo, heck, I'll admit I do like their work the most. But that's not to say I won't check out other companies also, I've had tons of fun on my PS2 and on my Gamecube alike. What matters to me is how the company presents itself, the games, and the technology and/or innovation. Take the next coming gen, Nintendo's presented itself rather well to me, I'm loving the games on the Wii so far, and I can't wait to try out the Wiimote.

X-Box 360 has Full Auto, Ninja Gaiden, DOA, Elder Scrolls, and other games I really wanna try. I'd also love to dig deeper into X-Box Live and see how it really functions, that's why it'd be my second choice.

Sony's impressed me little, honestly. sweatdrop I mean, Blu-Ray is nice, MGS4 rocks, I wanna continue with Final Fantasy, and I love the idea of the card battle game we saw at E3. But besides that, I'm really not that interested, at least not yet. I know I'mma get it 'cause they'rell be a buncha games I want for it.

But yeah, I don't want to seem all gung-ho loyal to one company to the point where I'll bash and no accept anything an opposing company does, 'cause each company, Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, have theirs ups and downs. Just the way this new gen has been shaping up, I gotta give my support to Nintendo.

I've heard that in early stages of the systems that they have loads of bugs that will need to be worked out. Hence, I agree with you that waiting is good. If I put money in for it, maybe I'm just cheap, I have the expectation that it will work fine. Plus, I am waiting for it to be about $200 or less.. I have no idea when that time will be..

So I take it that reserving at Gamestop stinks? I've honestly never done it.. what's wrong with reserving?

That's a cool way to look at companies. Survey a bit without loyalties. Kind of reminds me of the ronin samurai, who have no master, but live day to day for themselves and the ideals of samurai code (what makes the game system present itself well). smile I do think it's a good check, because then you can choose the rewards and styles that you like. However, the problem is that surveying many can get expensive unless your friend has all the systems...

Ronin Samurai, ftw, yo. cool xd But yeah, I guess when you put it that way it makes sense. Generally I tend to judge how the system'll run by looking at the technical specs and what developers are saying about it, that gives me a good idea of how it'll work before I can actually get my hands on it. And actually trying out the system isn't that expensive anymore, my first test of a 360 was at my local Toys-R-Us. xp

But yeah, most of the time I judge what I want by the specs. Shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, but War and Peace doesn't cost $200+. xd

Sorry.. I am a huge East Asian Studies [double major] nerd... this is history classes possessing me and speaking.. if you like samurai code stuff, ronins are kind of fun, but because they did not have masters, they were often poor (no guaranteed treasure/rewards for their services) but could choose their own battles... Samurai, if you don't know what they are, from my understanding were basically like French knights, pledging their loyalty to a master/commander-like figure in battles, who fought to preserve, more like the English, the King figure or master, and who in turn, the master/king gave the Samurai rewards to keep their loyalty. They practiced Zen Buddhism, which taught that one must meditate and solve internal issues amongst the self before going into battle. People in battle should not easily be able to afford thinking about personal issues, or anything else other than the battle as it distracted and one may be killed for it. So they practiced Zen, and then the ideas also taught that one should, once these constraints are removed or partially, one should prioritize what one thinks/feels, and concentrate deeply on it. Otherwise, one could also get rid of all constraints to take on a European existential idea [Jean-Paul Satre I believe was a famous existentialist] -- (get rid of all barriors, anything holding back what you do), in order to achieve a freedom-like feel and act in your full potential/making your unstoppable.

But true, appearances always seem to decieve on me... usually my way of dealing with it is waiting and surveying a little before my investments, but difficult if you don't have a way to do it free..
