random question i know, but we need more topics in this forum. So, what did everybodt think of Pumpkin. At first, I quite liked her. She seemed like that type of person thats always quiet, and in the background, the type that would always be understanding, etc.. but in the end? i think she turned out to be a real jealous b****. When she betrayed Syuri like that? And was then like.." now you know how it feels to lose something..." I thought that was pretty cold. I understand that back during their time, they were competition for eachother, but that was all in the past. An Pumpkin didnt even listen to Syuri's side of the story... crying What did you all think of her?

Oh my, yes! I really liked Pumpkin in the beginning of the book and very sorry for her being Hatsumomo's younger sister! In the end . . . I royally didn't like her, but also felt pity for her because of Hatsumomo's hatred had rubbed off on her.

^^^ nodds head in agreement. same here. At the end, i had a hatred for her, but then at the same time, i pitited her, b/c her "happiness" was a mere cover-up. She was truely miserable inside...

She was truely miserable inside... I agree as well. I really liked her in the beginning, but then when I found out Hatsumomo was going to be her sister, I felt really bad for her! By the end I hated her, but I also knew that it wasn't completely her fault - Hatsumomo had rubbed off so much on her that she didn't even realize what she had become.

I really liked Pumpkin all throughout the movie, until she set Sayuri up. Then I wanted to gouge her frigign eyeballs out! But before that, she didn't really DO anything. It was all mainly Hatsumomo.

Yuna_Leonheart I Think pumpkin was poisioned by Hatsumomo's Hatred of Sayuri and saw that Sayuri was more talented and successful than she I agree up to a point, but there were other issues at play. She was certainly Hatsumoto's creation, but she was also jaded by the war. You will notice that she'd drifted into the realm of the "bar hostess", and in the post-war environment, was probably also a hooker. She'd fallen considerably from her once-noble profession. It is to Sayuri's credit that she was always a lady and kept her dignity, her only mistake using one man to get rid of another so that she could have a third.

at the beginning of the book, Pumpkin was one of my favorite characters, she really looked out for chiyo...i think that if she had had a different big sister, it would have stayed that was...but as it was, as soon as they both became maiko, they were thrust against each other as competition by everyone...

Pumpkin was a nice girl with a good personality and a held-back temper, but because Hatsumomo became her Onee-san she took on her personality traits as well, because she was being taught by her. Pumpkin was not the smartest Maiko, and was easily poisoned or swayed by things around her. Though she is in all essence a sweet girl, and not bad looking.
