lightening bolt or incinerate would be a better idea with war elemental

War elemental takes too much time to set up to work well, I would suggest fireball instead, or you can just be creative and replace it with something else too.

Shock, Fire Blast, Lightning Bolt... 1 R cards like that to pop out a War Elemental, if you didn't do combat damage.
Then start using stuff like Blaze, Fireball, Invoke, and Demonfire to pile counters on it like it's going out of stlye; you knock off an opponents life while making it big enough to become the threat to take away what they have left.
BONUS: If you're War Elemental has gone past receiving 1 +1/+1 counter (it's a 2/2) in a multiplayer game, use cards like Rain of Embers, Hurricane and Earthquake to stack loads of counters, especially when you playing with a lot of players in the game. Make sure you've got Blue and Black removal handled, though; players love to stop perma-grow threats in their tracks with them.

lava axe is fine if your playing with mana burn, it has also helped me win a few duels...

War ele. is great.
You just need to know how to use him.
1) Don't use him with expensive spells.
2) Don't count on him to win the game.
3) Use him for Intimidation
Here's a fun non-standard combo.
Turn 1 & 2 get a goblin out.
TURN 3!
Swing with 2 goblins!
Seething song!
Goblin grenade
Spark element or ! goblin grenade
Have a 11/11 or a 9/9 turn 3.
