On youre bass would you rather use Flat wound strings? Or coiled strings?

Zooch On youre bass would you rather use Flat wound strings? Or coiled strings? I'm definately loving round wound. (That's what they're called.) Flatwounds don't give me that particular sound I look for. Though I must say, sliding with flatwounds is pretty damn awesome.

I use Ernie Ball fives for my five string. I like the real low gauges, so on my four-string I use the Rotosound Funk Master strings. Feels like your using over-cooked spaghetti for strings!
And I refuse to use anything besides roundwounds.

I use the heaviest strings I can find for my basses as I play mostly metal music. At the moment I'm using 65 steel coiled and they sound pretty good. I play jazz and funk, but I'm not really a fan of the sound that funk and jazz strings make. My music represents my attitude towards it...raw.

I like both. I have 2 basses. One with Ernie ball flatwound and the other with elixer round wound. I play both about the same amount

I think its comming up on time I should get myself some new strings. So I got a few questions. How long to strings normally last, the dudes at the shop where like "about a month two months playing regularly, you'll hear when they go" Im not sure if my strings are going just yet, but I have had them on the guitar since I bought it, and its been like 6 months since its been with me. They seem to be really treabbily now. Im sure they're different
So now Im not sure what to buy. Its fustraiting, because I don't know how all the different gagues should sound like, and I don't know what would be best for me. I could go and splash out on GHS boomers, many people have reccomended those for funk/rock players. I want somthing I can slap with a "thunk" kinda sound, but that will still be pretty low. So could some one tell me how gage thickness affects tone? Does a thicker gage mean lower notes? And less tone?

Don't lisen to the people at any shop the don't know a damm thing, trust me. And yes the thicker gage means lower notes.

If your strings ever begin to slightly sound more muddy.. then just boil them in a mixture of water, dishwashing soap and vinegar.. and your strings will sound as good as new. Bass strings last a long time.. if your switching out every 2 months then you either are going through them too fast or just have alot of money to burn.
And for the record, Round wounds for me. cool

Ive had one string on my old bass for 6 years, so they ive found they last that long, it doesnt have the best sound in relation to the other strings (which are D'Addario's cos they were cheapest), but i want to see how long it can last for, so two months for me is a load of crap, bass strings are to expensive to go after 2 months. I have elixer strings on my other bass, they are awesome, great sound biggrin
