Totally ganked from oldbie contest:
What Contest are you entering (in this post)? OLDBIE
Character Name: Dr. Ziad Shuckburgh
Character Appearance (Human): Ziad is six foot even and of average, athletic build, and takes meticulous care of his body. He's always well groomed, especially his goatee, without being considered metrosexual. He has dark hazel eyes, which normally lean more towards brown than green. His pitch black hair, like the rest of his appearance, is well kept and short considering his chosen profession. Ziad is in his mid to late thirties.
He has one tattoo and various scars on his upper chest and back that look like he has been repeatedly hooked. The same type of scars also litter around his knees. Those are just where they're mostly concentrated and there are several others dotting his body, but they are all in places easily covered with clothing. His tattoo is of the aum symbol (ignore the numbers) and is located here.
Refs: [x] [x] The last one (he's on the far left) is a great ref for his facial hair. <3
Character Personality: If you asked any of his family or co-workers to describe Ziad, the response received would be exactly what one would expect from a Hopkins graduated doctor from a well to do family of old money. His grades were exceptional, and there wasn't so much as a smudge on his record.
Always polite and respectful, Ziad was a very skilled doctor, even if he did seem to come off as a bit distant and guarded about his personal life. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, and no one thought anything of a doctor keeping his work and personal life separate. After all, that seemed to be the healthy thing to do in his practice.
He was efficient and incredibly bright in his field as a surgeon, so the fact that he was emotionless, quiet, and generally reserved never were a problem.
Surprisingly enough, no one really expected that closet reality show fan would have more than just a few hidden quirks. In fact, he had an entirely different life, one that he kept hidden from everyone that knew him outside the tight nit community.
On the outside, he was a respected member of the medical community, but he never really considered that to be his 'true' self. Adopted and raised by wealthy, high society types, Ziad learned rather quickly that he needed to fit into a certain role. Especially since he was an Arab, and not white.
He lives his 'second life' with a burning passion, letting go not in drugs, alcohol, and smoking, but in experiencing himself to the fullest. Deeply spiritual, he meditates daily and takes diligent care of his body and mind by not only running, but doing yoga and pilates. Since his body is the only thing that is truly his per say, he pushes it constantly.
That is how he got into suspensions. After he got his first (and only) tattoo, he overheard the shop's piercer and the artist doing his ink discussing the details of the upcoming event. His interest was piqued, and he asked for details. Soon enough, he was a part of the area suspension team. It quickly became a deep part of his spiritual growth in his mind, creating a euphoric, enlightenment-like state that would seemingly free his mind from his body.
Like his suspensions, he kept his relationships, which were always passionate and sometimes involved love, a secret as well. He is very familiar with karma sutra.
Due to his double life, Ziad is very good at lying and hiding things from people. Likewise, he has an amazing poker face, and usually cleans up if he ever plays with his colleagues, which is a rarity.
Also, he has an intense fear of being 'outed', almost near phobia level even. This stems from several other fears, namely disappointing his parents and bringing shame on them simply because they were his parents. They adopted him, and he feels that he will always be in debt to them for giving him a loving home.
As another point worth mentioning, due to the current international situation, Ziad gets picked for 'random searches' at airports more frequently than his other colleagues do when traveling to medical conventions. He hates being stereotyped by his skin color, and that is one topic that'll knock him out of his usually respectful attitude. He is not Muslim, period.
Character Background: When Diana found out that she was incapable of having children after years of expensive invetro-fertilization attempts on top of nearly a decade of trying the old fashioned way, she was devastated. And so, her and her husband Matthew finally went to their last option for a family, adoption.
They were in line for a very lovely, very Caucasian baby girl when they found out that the infant's mother had been a druggie. This would not do, so they managed to wiggle out of this commitment via money changing hands, and they were told they'd get a 'clean,' young baby boy instead.
Papers were signed and the pair was shocked to find their perfect baby boy to be not white, but Arab. Unable to back out of this as gracefully, and after a rather angry lecturing from a strongly worded social worker, they decided to accept their fate and take him home. They also kept his first name as his birth mother had named him before she was killed.
Soon, motherly instincts developed despite the difference in skin color, and he was brought up to be a little gentleman, just as Diana had always dreamed of.
The dream was momentarily shattered when she walked in on her son making out with a rather unsavory looking girl. She was utterly crushed and ran out the room sobbing. Feeling guilty, Ziad told the girl to leave immediately before going to find his mother. They talked and he begged her forgiveness, promising to never upset her like that again, ever.
For a while, he stuck to his promise and kept to his studies, fitting into the role his mother wanted quite snugly. But the looming feeling that this wasn't who he really was continued to eat him up inside.
It wasn't until college did he begin to 'slip' so to speak. Since his grades were really the only thing that his parents could see of him while he was away, he found it very easy to let himself go. First it was relationships without the fear of disappointing his parents, and then it was just being able to explore himself as a person.
He kept his grades exceptional, and began to find it much easier to do well when he wasn't hiding everything. To keep in shape, he ran and started taking both yoga and pilates as a suggestion from a female friend. This opened up more doors, and combined with the 'help' of said female friend, Ziad discovered how to apply the same sort of passion he had for his studies to a woman. It wasn't long before he had karma sutra memorized and was going in for his first tattoo.
More doors were consequently opened, and Ziad fell his way into suspensions.
This double life became more solidified and separated when he started graduate school. Now that his life was beginning to expand into the sights of his parents, he could either give up his 'true' self or simply become more secretive and careful. He chose the latter, unable to envision himself without himself, regardless of whether he was able to be honest about it or not.
This life continued with relatively no hitches whatsoever. His parents were proud and happy, and he was able to be himself some of the time. He considered it a fair bargain for all that his adopted parents had done for him, a small price to pay.
With exemplary performances through out his academic career, the transition from school to practice was fluid, and Dr. Shuckburgh was soon working as a surgeon in the area's private hospital.
His father died from a heart attack and slowly but surely, the stress of that on top of keeping the two different Ziads was beginning to wear strongly on him, but before an actual breakdown could happen, he got the acceptance letter of a lifetime...
How does your Character get to/why was your character chosen for the Island? Always the reality show enthusiast, Ziad secretly applies each season in attempts to actually be on Survivor. This time, he gets picked, or so he believes. He's so excited that he overlooks the details and simply tells his family and friends that he is going on a long vacation in addition to him doing some charity work down in the Caribbean.
What Serum do you want?: Clydesdale horse with a tauric serum so that he essentially looks like a centaur at 100%.
Describe your ideal 100% appearance: Relatively unchanged body wise waist up, only possibly tufts of extra fur. Waist down would be a Clydesdale horse bottom, ideally with the coloration of the last reference picture provided. I'd like him to look less clean cut, with longer hair and possible sideburns. Goatee stays though.
Refs for the horse: [x] [x] [x]
Why this animal/plant for your character?: I personally like the coloring of the last reference I provided, with it being very dark black and browns with the separation between the white legs and body sort of muddled. It somehow reminds me of how Ziad has the double life because I'm a dork. White represents the societal role his parents wish him to fit into, and the dark colors (both his skin and hair, ironically) represents who he really sees himself as.
Also, I feel that the transformation into something that is has distinctly separate horse and human halves will force him to both mentally and emotionally cope with himself as a person. There are so many many parallels that can be drawn.
What do you think really makes this concept? I know there are already several tauric serums, but I think a centaur would be vastly different from the two active islanders since one's aquatic, and the other is a giraffe.
There are just so many themes that could be brought out because of the double life he lived. I think that -that's- what will bring something different to the RP, not specifically the serum itself. Sure the suspension -kind of- makes him unique, but it's the mental side of the transformation (and how it links with the physical changes) that I really want to get into with Ziad. To me, I think that this could bring variety to the role play (on top of ethnic diversity) and open some plot doors as well. Plus, I'd say I'm pretty active with Antony.
