Peace Love And Skate

I have noticed, there is extreme hostility towards hippies, or those with many hippie ideals. This is totally buggin' me. Hippie is not a smell, being a hippie doesnt mean you wear tiedye and smoke dope. Being a hippie doesn't mean you boycott s**t. Being a hippie does not mean long haired liberal. Hippie is a philisophical approach to life which emphasizes peace, love, freedom, and respect. Being a hippie means you embrace that philosophy. And this totally uncool hate towards us is not so groovy. Killin' the good vibes. I live in the WORST part of the bible belt, and hate is very horrid here. Standing outside a gas station, in one of my favorite dead shirts, carrying a stick. Guess what I get? "QUEER! QUEER!"
Just earlier today, I was crossing the highway, with a large group of friends. I am singled out, of course, by the drive-by hicking, in which a wife-beater yells out the window "PEACE!" In a mocking manner of the large peace sign on my shirt. My friends, I am begining to see a pattern, and I feel a 60's revival. I have done much thought, and vietnam is re-enacted by the "War on Terror". And legal segregation? The immigration problem. I am really bothered by the misconceptions of hippie. I feel I am not the only one. So I boil it down to a few questions, You guys feeling the negative vibes? Why do you think there are so many? And the ever-popular, what do you think of the near future?

I feel them too my friend. People fear what is different. Hippies have a view of things that is different than that of those that hate us and so they mock us and do things to make us feel insignificant. They are afraid of our ideas. It also depends on where you live. In an area like a small town in the southern US, you'll feel alot more hostility than in somehwere like San Francisco. Personally, if someone hates me for being a hippy, that's their problem. I won't sink to their level and start making stupid remarks.

My mom has peace activist hippie friends her age 50. They live in the states and she is real worried that the kind of violence and misinformation used to put down vietnam protestors will be much worse for those who do not subscibe to mr bush's crusade on terrorism!
They (www.peaceabbey.org)pulled a 2 ton granite grave stone on foot from Mass. to Arlington Cemetary to try and get it accepted with the military graves. It is dedicated to all unknown civilians killed in war.
She says it's easy being a hippie when one is young. It is living with all the abuse and joking for decades and still coming back with love that is the true test of a hippie!
There has always been a Babylon. If it were so easy, there would be no need for hippies!
I will end on a joke.
In the 60s people took LSD to make a normal world wierd!
In 2006, people take Prosac to make a wierd world normal!

I get slagged off so much at my school for believing killing others is wrong and for protesting against Iraq.

I live in the northern midwest (Michigan), and the intolerance is unbelievable. Alternate sexualities, religions, ethnicities, and sociocultural choices send everyone into a ******** frenzy.

A bisexual Pagan hippie medievalist and her crew just can't get a break 'round here. I wish it was different, but too many of us are too many things that aren't accepted here, usually all in one package. The most we can do is hope for the best, prepare for the worst, and act for the change we crave.

Spread awareness and keep faith.

I don't really care what anyone does or says. I actually think its pretty sad that people judge me and pass me off so quickly as a "damn hippy." Once people get to know me, they know I'm a nice person and I have a lot of interesting interests.

Yeah, I do everything that a stereotype suggests...

But in the end, if people don't want to get to know me, then I figure its fine not knowing them...

I suppose I'm not the hippiest hippy here... rolleyes

I work at Chuck E Cheese (which basically makes money off materialism and too-greasy pizza), I downloaded some Missy Elliot recently, and I love meat. A lot. xd

But on the other hand, my favorite outfit is my green jeans (although they're being borrowed for a musical sad ), my tie-dye shirt, and green hat.
I'm against war for any reason, love the Beatles, Strawberry Alarm Clock, and Jefferson Airplane, and my dream is to work in a new age store. whee But, I'm all about love and peace and whatnot. And I accept people for their differences even if they cant accept me. 3nodding Not just saying that to make you like me, I really mean it. I'm just not good at putting it in words. sweatdrop

So I suppose I have enough balance to not get crap for being myself. xd
That and I live in a small town in Illinois where people know me enough to accept me like the odd family member you love anyway. 3nodding

*sigh* tis true. i have suffered many a negative vibe should i even mention the song "mr.tambourine man". its a good song! and the druggie stereotype that follows around hippies is just saddening, i hate it. here in england, the hippies are a dying race, i find. people laugh about the holocaust and jive about banning the bomb. but in these terrorist days, i feel we should be trying to encourage peace. i doubt the hippie view will increase among the common public, but there is no doubt in my mind that there will always be a hippie, fighting for peace and love in this world. heart well, doesnt that make me sound disney corp.? and by the way, i LOVE tie-dye, theyre just so fun to make! and the long hair thing? mine is down to my hips, at yet, not once have i gotten teased for it. most people think its looks really groovy. so yeah, hippies to tend to get alot of negative vibes, but i guess, just follow the great ghandi, and, um, make peace with your enemies. rolleyes

The climate is especially hostile these days. Enemies of peace have been using preemptive tactics to thwart meaningful protest. There really aren't many spokespeople for peace, virtually no people left around which a movement can gravitate. People are more complacent now than they were in the Sixties.

I find it sad that the two most mainsteam-visible advocates for peace are ineffectual "emo kids" who embrace negativity as a way of life, and John Stewart - who no-one will ever take seriously. This is very different from the climate of the sixties, when people fought so hard to make such incredible gains for social progress and ethics... do we need to wait until the body count approaches Vietnam proportions? Will people wake up then?

However, hippie ideology still spreads. It's not so much dropping out of society/conforming to behavioral-speech-appearance stereotypes... these won't make much of a difference. Rather, it's all about what you carry within yourselves; your dreams, hopes and values. Like the phial of Galadriel that Frodo carried with him - there is a light within each of us that even the most pernicious evil cannot extinguish.

You cannot change a society from outside. Even if you reject the bankrupt values of that society, if it owns the land you camp on, it might as well own you. We must take the "fight" to the enemy and beat it on its home turf.

These are dark days my friends, everything dear to us is at risk. The world needs hippies more than ever now, yet there aren't many of us left.

The ones that are left get humiliated because of their beliefs, and are shunned by society. Their time is running out (as the song by Muse goes) and before long they'll realise that just like in the 60s, they need us. Just give it time and hold in there my friends, the hippie will rise again.

I am so sick of the people where i live. I am 16, and live in northeastern U.S. You probably think the north is accepting, but it isn't... I always have a bunch of punkass idiots ride by on bikes and in cars and screaming hippie at me, or making fun of me in some stupid way. I once had someone throw a fast food cup full of coke at me...luckily it missed... I was out on my front lawn the other day (I live on a corner next to a main road) and me and my close friend/bandmate (he plays guitar/sings, and I play bass) were sitting under a tree in sandals, a tee shirt, I was wearing a tye dye bandanna, and we were playing Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin and other classic rock music. Then I laid down and he started soloing and singing by himself and I decided to wave at some cars driving by. Of course, they were all laughing or staring at us. Then some city worker had the balls to give us the peace sign in an offensive way and laugh. There are a few hippies in my neighborhood. Me, and this other guy (wow two...) who rides his bike all day and he greets people all day and he's totally nice, but people make fun of him. It really pisses me off. People hate me because of stupid things like my hair that can cover my face and goes down to my shoulders.... My neighborhood descriminates people alot.
