Ys is a rather old series that the company known as Falcom has recently revived. A couple of their other known titles are The Legend of Heroes and Vantage Master (You can download the freeware game Vantage Master Online Here:
http://www.falcom.co.jp/vantage/index_e.html ). By the way, Vantage Master is a tactical RPG.
Anyway... about the title of this thread. Ys, was, in fact, the first RPG to ever have animated scenes and vioices, which earned it an OVA series. Most people here probably haven't heard of YS, because 1. Ys 6 the Ark of Napishtim was a sleeper, and 2. When Ys fist came out we were probably still learning how to read or not born yet.
Anway, the latest Ys installments are the hack and slash type of RPGs while originally (everthing through Ys 4) sported a unique battle system in which you ran into the enemies from different angles to damage them. Although originally you also never saw Adol swing hos sword, which was okay since it was clear when enemies, or you, were taking damage. There has also been a remake of Ys 1&2, for the PS2, unfortunately it was never translated. Now the only way to get those in English is to 1. get luck, find a turbographics and Ys 1&2 or 2. You may find it as a cellphone game. That's about all I know about how to get that.
Ys is currently a seven game series, and in my opinion, should be respected.
Oh and unlike many other RPGs all of the Ys RPGs are directly connected. In every single one, your main characer is Adol. Dogi has also been a constant character since Ys 1, plus characters from previous games will often show up in later ones.
Also, this is one of those game where you never see what the main character says. Although it is apparent he
IS talking at times, you don't get to see what he's saying. Although sometimes it gives you the basic gist of what he's saying. Other times the other people just respond to him so you have to fill in the holes.
xp Also, about the YS OVAs, they're very retro in style, and storyline. I like them though, although I can't say the they're really that impressive they're quite enjoyable. Anyway, the Ys 2 OVA is better than the first two OVAs of the first game, howver, it's probaby better to watch them in order so you know exactly what's going on in them since the first and second game were directly connected with no time in between them. Techinically they could be stand alone though.
