i feel like contributing to this fairly small subforum, because i can.
i am a big fan of many types of metal, but i'd have to say that most of my favorite bands lie in the extreme metal section of the enourmous genre of 'metal.'
This thread will hopefully become a good place to discuss all of the many sub-sub-genres of extreme metal. whether it be gothic metal (not all, but some of that contains extreme metal attributes), melodic death metal, death metal, viking metal, black metal, melodic black metal, some folk metal, and whatever else you think of that fits in this category.
some my favorite bands of this sub-genre include: In Flames, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Kalmah, Finntroll, Children of Bodom, Cradle of Filth, Arch Enemy, Thyrfing, Suidakra, and others which i currently cannot think of.
discuss here: specific genres, specific bands, extreme metal as a whole, band recommendations, etc.

I listen to lots of black metal, which uses mostly all harsh vocals. I'm not into death grunts. Also quite abit of folk metal and viking metal and doom metal and gothic metal, styles which I'm pretty into, use harsh vocals.
Favourite harsh-sung bands: Wintersun Ensiferum Swallow The Sun Summoning Vintersorg Borknagar

What I always wanted to know but no one ever could explain is WHAT defines Extreme Metal? When I was younger I thought it was a genre, but I threw that thought away when I heard it being used as for Dissection and Symphony X, which to me have very little in common. Then I just figured it's a joke, like Tr00 Metal. Always entertaining smile
So I use extreme metal for something that is extreme in it's own genre. Dragonforce in Power Metal, In Flames definitely not in Death. Nile? Deicide? Don't know. Not CoB, never CoB, or CoF. That's just mediocre. Or, better put, it doesn't strike me as extreme.

Children of Bodom is mad skilled: whatever you want to call them (melodic death metal, etc.) but alexi laiho does the harsh vocals just for effect not to sound good
In Flames is not a bad band but their sound gets annoying after a short time
CoB takes the title in dual guitar keyboard solos for current bands i think

piusaeneas CoB takes the title in dual guitar keyboard solos for current bands i think Stratovarius - Visions is even better when it comes to guitar-keyboard duels, not harsh vocals though, just so you know.

I always prefered the black metal shriek over the death metal grunt.
Favorite extreme metal bands would have to be Judas Icariot, Lord Foul, Emperor, Nachtmystium, The Project Hate, Anta, Cryptopsy, Leviathan (US), and plenty of others

Actually, I think the only harsh vocals I can stand are Immortal, Emperor, Finntroll, Six Feet Under, and Coroner. After that, I like my clean power and progressive metal vocals.

I'm not really into the BM style harsh vocals, or maybe it's just the poor production that turns me off but the only black metal I like is Emperor, Immortal, early Katatonia, early Borknagar and Arcturus. Burzum and Darkthrone just bore me. I can't see how people get past the crappy production.
I enjoy alot of death metal however, the grunt style appeals to me. Favourite DM bands: Obituary, Decapitated, Possessed, Terrorizer, Entombed, Atheist, Cynic, Atrocity, The Berzerker, Morbid Angel and so on.

Helmorana I am still not clear on WHAT exactly passes as Extreme Metal. Explanation, anyone? confused It's not a real sub-genre. Mainly an adjective used to describe certain bands who are seen as "extreme", Cradle Of Filth for example.

Mainly an adjective used to describe certain bands who are seen as "extreme", Cradle Of Filth for example.that's about it. i generally use it as a Cross-genre reference, as it were. basically any heavy stuff with harsh vocals. like inflames minus maybe some of Soundtrack, and some of RtR. or Thyrfing, or Finntroll, or EToS or something.
