I'm a gatehead and have recently been introduced to Doctor Who 9 when it began to play on SciFi. I have also been watching Doctor Who 10 thanks to youtube.com. I love both seriese. Now I've been thinking about buying the older DVDs, but I'm not sure if I would like them.

I've heard a lot of people say that the new Doctor Who seriese is a lot different than the older ones. So, do you think I would like the older ones? For instance, I'm used to American humor, but I'm quickly learning an appreciation for British humor. (It really is way better.) I love shows like SG1, SGA, and Firefly. So, do you think it would be worth it for me to invest my money in the older DVDs or not? Because I don't know if I would like the older version of Doctor Who.

Any suggestions?

See if there are episodes available to rent at a video store, or at the library, or to borrow from someone. That would give you a little taste of the original series before you put down money to buy expensive imported DVDs.

As long as you don't mind not so high teck special effects cause you have to remember the age of them there wasn't a lot od special effects then, and they where too expencive. Those things are a lot cheaper, and more advanced now.

But if you like the story and not worried about things like that then I personaly think it's worth it.

you would like then althought the personality swings between each doctor may confuse you, they have alot of...whats the word... technical jibber jabber that the doctor says at like 100/MPH! and the 4 or higher part episodes that are marvolise.

If you liked 'Dalek', you could pick up 'Genesis of the Daleks' when it comes out in the U.S. on June 6th. Though not their first on-screen appearance, it's their first chronological appearance (from a Dalek viewpoint, anyway), and features the 4th Doctor with companions Sarah Jane Smith and Harry Sullivan. It's a 2-disc set, and one of the bonus features will be a 53-minute documentary on the history of the Daleks, which will cover all of their appearances from the classic serial (not sure if that would include their cameo in the 8th Doctor TV movie).

Well, not much overt humor in 'Genesis', but if that's what you're looking for, I suggest trying 'City of Death'. It was co-written by Douglas Adams...

if you like SG1 and SGA you'll probably like Jon Pertwees doctor, but you might not

Thanks for the suggestions! I didn't realize I'd have to buy separate episodes... are there any box sets?

For some reason, the BBC isn't into boxsets, except for the new series. Each DVDs will contain the whole story arc, so about 4 or more episodes.

I just finished watching "Remembrance of the Daleks", which is set in London, 1963 (around about the time of the very first episode). I absolutely loved it, but then Sylvester McCoy was always my favourite Doctor...

I think they did a Key to Time boxset, didn't they?
Don't know that I'd suggest starting with that arc, though.

They did, and that's actually the arc I started with. It's not a bad place to start. You don't have to know too much about the series for it all to make sense and it's a unified story.

I'll keep that one in mind, then. Thanks.

The thing about BBC boxsets is that during the old series, the Doctor would fight one enemy for a good 4-10 episodes set consecutively. The 9th and 10th Doctors are obviously more up to speed as they can defeat any nemesis in 2 episodes!

I can't really say which are the best to start on after the new series - I started out watching the 2nd Doctor ones so I'm kind of attached. But I probably wouldn't reccommend them to start on.

Probably any of them from 3 to 7 (a wide range I know). If you don't mind me asking, do you like humour, action or wacky plotlines best? Or are you a monster fan? And do you mind about wobbly sets/costumes? (I find them hilarious but some people do get annoyed by them. In which case there are certain episodes that have much better sets and costumes than others...)

Also, have you seen the TV movie? Not very classic Doctor Who-ish really but I enjoy watching it now and then. If you haven't seen the original Master then you won't even mind what they did to him in it...

I don't mind any of the bad graphics. And I like humor, but serious is good, too. I know the basic plot line to The Master, thanks to Wikipedia. Hehe.

Key to time is hundereds of dollars on ebay, and you'd be lucky to find it in a store.
I sugest you watch them on Netflix. Netflix has literaly all of the region 1 doctor who avalible. That way you don't have to buy the series if your on a budget or don't know if you'd like a certain doctor.

also: if you like douglas addams you'll like the 4th doctor, Tom Baker.
