I'm not sure about you, but I find "wapanese" ya know, People who learn Japanese through anime, then speak it with English words?

Well, some girl thought it was "COOL" they were learning a new language. gonk
meanie the pooh

wapanese---- i've neer heard of it until i read this
i think it's cool that white kids are trying to speak japanese, or any other language for that matter. Just because you're not good at something it doesn't mean that you have to learn it fully and then show it around to people in public
-minah-

gonk gonk gonk gonk gonk
I was just wondering. Do you think she's right?

I think that they should take grammar lessons, so they don't sound like morons.

Of course, this is coming from someone nearly fluent in the language, so I've put a lot of work into learning the language. It's going to be opinionated.

Well, there is that whole, 'to each their own' side of it all. But in my opinion, if you truely enjoy something that much, than it is worth it to put an effort into learning at least a good portion of it to the best of your ability. Sometimes a person can't afford lessons or they hit a wall when it comes to teaching themselves. That is understandable. But until they have a good grasp on the language, I don't feel that they should find themselves an authority on speaking it. sweatdrop

I understand that, of course. But picking it up from anime and throwing the words in with English gets annoying after awhile. [to me at least]

As for as I know, the English language was built with other languages. So with that in mind I think I can accept it to a certain degree. If the English language really does assimilate other languages than I don't see why Japanese would be any acception. People have certainly made allowances for slang words to be added to the dictionary as far as I remember being told. But you're definetly right with that it gets very annoying.

Edit:

Don't get me wrong. I'm not defending the act. I do think it's very odd but I just felt it was important to say that in the history of english, there is a long list of stolen words from other languages. This could possibly be a language that may add to our english thesaurus.

nope, I don't think she's right. I even hate it when in fanfics, people write in english but randomly write in "hai!" or "baka stare " or something. I used to do that since the only type of things I read was fanfics (wasn't much of a reader back then) so it influenced my writing a lot. Blah. It's stupid when people partically learn a language without trying to actually learn it. Like right now, I'm trying to learn Spanish from friends. *nods*
It gets on my nerves.

I understand what you mean, but I highly doubt it. It's not exactly respected enough to be added to our thesaurus, it sticks with a sub group of people who act stupid and agh.
I mean, can you imagine a japanese person speaking japanese a mile a minute, then randomly throwing it english words. Sometimes it's ok in songs, but usually it's like "what the hell? well, that was random... stare " Meh. But I get your point.

You're right about that, I suppose. Some of the people who do tend to blend it in to our language don't even have a good hold on the English language, let alone the Japanese language.
I usually don't really mind hearing English words mixed into Japanese when it comes to songs and such. I'm not sure why that is. In the context of music, I suppose I think it's amusing or that it actually fits the song.

I admit I might be a spreader of "wapanese".

I usually prefer to watch anime in Japanese. Normally, the voice actors sound better. Fit the character more, you know? And I also watch quite a bit of anime, so I'm exposed to a good amount of Japanese.

Now, after hearing Japanese for quite awhile, it's only natural that snatches of it might stick into your vocabulary. Some people, I think, just use Japanese as a natural reflex. Of course, plenty of people do it to look cool, but in my opinion... walking around sprouting random bits of a language that they don't have a very good understanding of, and half the people around them don't know.

o_O

But, whatever floats everyone's boats, I guess.

I watch anime in Japanese too. I think the only one I can really stand to listen to while dubbed is Cowboy Bebop. They did a very good job with the dubbing there. Maybe just with the movie though. Otherwise, yeah, for me it has to be in Japanese because it simply fits better.

Ho s**t. Someone who understnads! heart

@xYuffx: I prefer to watch anime in Japanese as well...and I do understand if you're like "hey that's a ____! Oh s**t oops.." but I hate it when people do it to look cool. "OH THAT LITTLE CAKE IS KAWAII! I THINK YOU ARE A BAKA ^____^" And it's my favorite if they use it incorrectly. MY NAME IS KELSEY - KUN. [correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't -kun used for boys normally? Not sure.]

You still have to admit, fans like that are annoying.

i know what you mean
my friend does it and it bothers me SO much
she pronounces all the words WRONG too
and maybe i wouldn't mind it as much if she said them CORRECTLY
it also bothers me when people mis-pronounce names of manga characters too
like she pronounced sasuke form naruto like "Sah-Sue-keh" until it came out on toonami evil

i've seen so many "Bakas" and "Kawaiiness"
its like it will never stop!
