So follow the lives till they cut up your eyes...

Do you ever get that feeling when you're in temple, like, "I'll never be able to leave at this rate! Sooooo looooong..." And do you know WHY this is? LONG PRAYERS! gonk The resident rabbi at my school has a knack for extending usually short prayers, such as the Shema. It's like a one minute prayer usually, y'know...but my lovely ( stare ) rabbi will extend it to about five minutes by drawing out every syllable.
"Shemmmmmmaaaaaaa...Yiiiiiiissraaaaaaeeeeeellll..."
*bangs head on pew in front of me* gonk

Ever have this experience? Rabbi getting on your nerves? Share your thoughts! biggrin

I find that prayer is prayer and that whether long or short I don't realaly notice because when I pray, I'm praying and I don't pay attention to much else, in fact the longer the better, but I understand where you are coming from. When I was younger, I mean like six or younger I used to always go out to go to the bathroom just to pass the time by. NOw, the services seem too short.

The only services that seem like that to me are Yom Kippur morning and Kol Nidre because of the fasting, but other than that, thhey don't seem that long.

It varies. Sometimes, with the old assistant rabbi we had (she left, thankfully), I felt like... the services weren't as sincere... she should have been a cantor, you could TELL the cantor was annoyed with the way the rabbi was taking her job a bit. But, typically, it doesn't matter how long it is, except when my little bro starts annoying and distracting me.

i can stay in services at my orthadox sure(longer for the whole time but not the one at my conservitive shul(shorter). though when in was younger the old rabbi at the conservitive shul would talk forever and i thought services were always really boring they didnt end till like 2pm and they started at 9am

I could never sit still in services, basically because they were crowded, hot and so much sitting standing sitting standing...not to mention my temple was filled with the nasaley, stereotypical New York/Brooklyn or wherever jewish women. Im not one to complain about any jew, but those women just get on my nerves, especially when praying with that nasaley accent stressed

I think you all have too short of attention spans blaugh

On a more serious note, prayer is prayer. So what if you have to sit for a few hours listening to it? It's your religion- be motivated to!!! 3nodding

If prayer is prayer, cant we be allowed to pray at our own speed?

no, in our shul things are pretty quick and laid back. Since its so small everybody is just so comfortable with one another that things just kinda...roll....if you know what i mean..... sweatdrop none of that long drawing out of prayers or sections.

i agree with DK. though i think our definitions of personal speed vary.

on the one hand, tefillah (prayer) should be said with the highest amount of concentration one can muster. every word, especially with krias shema and shemona esrei, should be pronounced carefully and deliberately. some poeple need more time for this than others do.

on the other hand, the gemara mentions that rabbi akivah would rush his own teffilos, so that the rest of the tzibor (congregation) would not have to wait for him.

in the end, yes, i agree, there are many rabbis that should not hold the positions they do, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be respected. and it really couldn't hurt if one decided to be a little more vigilant in ones prayer. one cannot cange others, only oneself.

Since I moved up here in ALbany and I haven't joined a temple, my friend took me to hers for the Yom Kippur services. Oh man, this one took longer than any of the ones I was at. They just drew everything out so long. And the rabbi said some weird stuff too. (we all start out as smelly droplets, wtf?)

It also didn't help that this year was more depressing than any other year. neutral

That's from Pirkei Avot. Don't remember who said it, but I remember reading it. (The "smelly drop" part)
