I figured that I could get away with a thread about them in this forum.

Most of this information will have been taken (and reworded) from their official site, www.themarsvolta.com)
BIOGRAPHY

Formed in 2001 from the former members of emo/punk geniuses, At The Drive In, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala, the MV classify themselves as neither a prog rock back or a "concept album band", although they excel at both. In fact, they formed the group in order to escape such oppressive labels.
But their albums ARE based on concepts, and they ARE quite heavy topics. 2003's epic de-loused in the comatorium tells a sci-fi-esque tale of a brilliant man in an imaginary universe created by the band. Its follow up, this year's Frances the Mute also deals with heavy subject matter: the death of a close friend. It transpired in the real world and was inspired by a diary found by one of the band's late members in the backseat of a repossessed car.
Their albums are not light, throwaway material. With average song-length reaching far beyond the normal 4-minute pop standard, the music of the MV should be considered, and listened to repeatedly. The music is full of subtleties and the lyrics can be confounding and confusing, especially if you're not bi-lingual, as it's often in Spanish.
The official biography relates the rather fascinating tale of the stories behind the albums. These albums could just as easily be written into prose and become (albeit rather difficult) literature. Both albums have evaded commercial success, which shouldn't come as a surprise in the fickle, ADD-riddled American music industry. But they are critical darlings, receiving stellar reviews from around the globe (with the exception of pitchforkmedia, but who listens to them??)
They have their own label, Gold Standard Laboratories, on which they released the early Tremulant EP. They quickly picked up steam after that, and found celebrity aide in Rick Rubin, Flea and John Frusciante from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the like, for production and musical backup.
If given enough time, the Mars Volta will give you nothing but a rewarding experience in return. They produce vast, lush, epic music that should be enjoyed by oneself, through nice headphones. I don't see them selling out anytime soon.

First post is too long...

anyways:

frances the mute > tremulant ep > de-loused in the comatorium

Has anyone heard the Frances the Mute EP? The actual song? I heard it was a super rare, vinyl only release. I wanna hear it.

Actually Frances the Mutes has been out since the 1st of this month. I have the album, and it is fantastic. If you like, my soulseek name is melatonin, and you can get it from me that way if you see me online.

I don't mean the album, I have it, bought it over spring break.

I'm talking about a supposed title track/EP that exists, they supposedly released it vinyl-only or something like that. I haven't heard any solid info on it, just rumors of its existance. It's a sort of prelude to the album Frances the Mute.

Internet celebrity in my thread :B
Frances the Mute, the song, is on the Widow single.
Frances as a whole is slowly growing on me. I can't deal with Tremulant. De-loused is my favorite.
Has anyone heard the import-only song "ambuletz"?

No, and I want to. I also want to hear The Widow single. Or the b-sides anyways.

The Widow single is in two parts...
The one with the song Frances the Mute on it, part A, features the edit of the Widow, as the B-side, and FTM as the A-side.

I'm listening to De-Loused In The Comatorium and I think it's good, I like the music and the vocals. I don't think I'd pay big bucks to see them live, though.

Dude, I totally picked up the European import of The Widow EP but I didn't even have time to listen to it, went straight to packing and mailed off to my house back home.

How is it?

but that doesnt mean 'interesting' is 'better'

I hate At The Drive In, and I can honestly say that The Mars Volta did a much better job at writing songs on their first album, but they had more interesting sounds on their second. Taking what they have in Frances the Mute and making into tracks that don't ramble too endlessly would be pretty key.

Their new album, Amputechture, is now out and pretty rocking.
