flaunt it.

Kalandra said something in another thread about many of us being 'show off' book lovers, meaning that we like to show off our book collections. I'd never realized it before, but she's right. I take pride in my unusual number of books (well, it's not unusual here ...). The massive, multiple bookshelves are the first things people notice when they come into my house, and I like how people know from the start that I love my books.

Is your book collection a source of pride? Do you like to show it off? Do you like being the person with the house full of books?

Joy, recognition!

I associate with a rather diverse crowd, but I can honestly say that the dedicated reader category amongst them falls short. Typically when someone walks in and noses about, I get the "you didn't actually read that... did you?" look or the "Like she has read all those books" jokes.
But like I said in earlier threads, I live in a very small apartment. I pride myself in my home, not just my books, so I like to keep things looking "homey" yet personal. My books are spread out from area to area - a little here, a little there, piles to and fro.

Now that it is finally spring (blasted Michigan weather), I scavenge garage sales for new bookcases. I have an area picked out and know exactly what I want, but I refuse to pay full price for a bookcase. The fact that I dedicate time each week to search for one definitely... makes me an oddball. xD

I definitely have pride in my collection, love showing it off (I also lurk libraries for book sales and freebies on a weekly basis just to add to it) and revel in being 'the book lady.'

Considering I do not have one area for books just yet, I would love to take a picture of my collection and show everyone - in fact, I'd love to see everyone else's as well. Maybe we can add library photos to this thread? I can just imagine all of us squinting to read one another's titles. xDD

I don't know if I've ever been a show-off about my collection. Mostly I find myself complaining how my shelves are bending under all the weight that I've put on them. I also have little plushies and other trinkets littering my shelves so it's not just books.

Although I feel rather proud of myself that I started organizing my shelves holding my vast movie collection and in the process I made more room for my books. Granted it was the manga series that my German friend mailed to me, but still it is books that have a proper place to reside for the time being.

4laugh I love to show off my books. When I own my own house I'm going to line the walls of the living area with bookshelves and fill every single one.

Well being that I'm still in highschool, I don't get enough money to buy all the books I want, but I love the ones I do have. All my books are stuffed in my room, so no one ever really gets to see them other then me (and any family member that wonders into my room).

I do love my books though and I wish I could show them to people.

Lack of money and the fact that I collect lots of other things means I don't have nearly as many books as I'd like to. Though I've shifted my main collecting focus from toys to books, so hopefully I'll be expanding my collection soon.

My bookshelf, which also contains DVDs and other junk:

And my shelf of manga, (which contains loads of other stuff) I've gotten quite a bit more since this picture was taken:

eek I have that Popple. I remember. It was from the Xmas where all I wanted was a "White Popple with a Blue Belly." My Dad just told me last year about the crazy day he spent waiting outside of the PX (we were on an armybase in Europe back then) to get it for me. I still have it, just like you do.

But.... Back on topic. The first thing that people see when they come in my/our house is my/our bookcase. The BF and I have plenty of way too many books. The doors to the bathroom are also flanked by cases. So yes... we show ours off plenty too much.

I've only got one bookshelf in my room. And I own about 20-30 real books. I've got about 100-130 comics.
Most books I read are:
- or from my older sister.
- or from the library.

But I'm dreaming of a house packed with books. A library as in the Disney movie the beauty and the beast. With a ladder that can ride in front of them. *wheeeeeeeeeeee!* but *sniff* I probably will never have something like it. *sniff sniff* sad cry cry crying crying crying

You may! It just happens over time. MANY MANY of my books come from college classes. I had one which required me to buy 16 books once - a history class too.

I know most people do, I do. In most cases if you have a lot of something you tend to show it off.

Yay! Pictures! I can't wait to be re-united with my books so that I can upload my pictures as well. We must seem so silly to any 'normal' person. Posting pics of bookshelves on the internet? wink

Off topic - Gloom, that's quite a My Little Pony collection you have there. I only ever had two (and I loved them!), but they were lost 12 years ago when I moved. I love My Little Ponies.

I often think of that library too. Lucky Belle ... she found a guy who gave her a multi-story library!

Books are way too expensive, and I hardly ever find used versions of what I'm looking for. Not taking that into account the few books that I do have I take proud in having them fully annotated and dissected...((to the best of my ability at the time I read them))

Thanks Fairgrass! That's only about 1/4 of my collection, I used to be crazy about collecting them. :3

I would love to have more books so I could really show them off. Lately I've been checking the books for sale every time I go to the library, and I've been trying to go to the used book store more often too.

One of my friends was over this weekend and I found him scoping out my book collection for potential future borrowing once he feels like reading again. I've become a library! blaugh

A girl friend and I are planning to take pictures of my anime collection for a related project we will begin, and I'm sure that we'll get all my manga in there so maybe I can post pictures of that soon. Although I do have a disposeable camera that I keep around to use the rest of the film in... I guess I could go ahead and take pictures of my bookcases now toward that goal. xd

I adore showing off my books...they're part of my pride and joy...though sometimes I feel as though I need to get a bigger bookshelf when I walk into her house and there's at least one jam packed bookshelf in every room, including the foyer... sweatdrop
