miquelet sighed... it was incredibly boring, reading every day... day in, day out, reading almost constantly, until the pages blurred before her eyes... she didn't dare go outside, for fear someone would see her... she was much to shy to risk having to talk to someone... but still, reading got boring after the first month of non-stop reading... that, and she'd read every book she owned already... then one day she had an idea... a hobby...! maybe if she could find a hobby, she wouldn't be so bored all the time... but what would make a good hobby...? she checked her books, and found a list of popular hobbies... airplane models boating botany calligraphy dolls knitting miniature trains numismatism ships in bottles stamps swimmingas she perused the list, she marked off hobbies that she didn't want to try... eliminating one after the other, she became worried they'd all be checked off... but there was one hobby left at the end... botany, or caring for plants... miquelet thought for a moment, and remembered there was a small flowershop not very far away... if she could just make it there, she could buy a plant or two and have something new to divert her attention. steeling herself for the endeavor, she stepped outside, momentarily blinded by the bright sunshine... making her way down the road, she saw the flowershop, just where she thought it was... but wait, what's that...? there was a large sign affixed to the window... MOVED TO GREENER PASTURESwell, that certainly didn't help things... now what was she supposed to do...? as far as she knew, that was the only flowershop in town... she didn't want to just take a random flower from the ground, they already had their home... "Something I can help you with, dearie...?"miquelet whirled around as she heard the voice... as skittish as she was around people, she usually sensed their arrival before they got nearly so close... how had this person snuck up on her...? she looked at them, realizing it was an elderly woman, pushing a small cart laden with all manner of jars and pots... "um... uh..." "What's that...? You need a plant...? Well, I just so happen to have one that I think you'd like..."what was that...? miquelet hadn't really said anything, but the old lady seemed to know exactly what she had been trying to say... how bizarre...! "uhh, th- umm..." "Don't worry about the cost, I had to find a home for it today or it would have been too late..." as she said this, the old woman handed a small vase to miquelet... it was filled with rather lifeless looking soil, not nearly as rich or black as the dirt in other pots... but beyond anything else, the flower it held was something more unique than any she'd ever seen before... it almost looked like a long-stemmed rose, but it's colors made that an impossibility... it had graceful, pristine white petals, and asubtle grey stem... a grey stem...? is such a thing even possible...? maybe it's an artificial plant...? curious, miquelet gingerly touched the petals, and was surprised when she felt that the plant was, in fact, real and alive...! miquelet accepted the gift, nodding her thanks... "Just remember to care for it, and it will bloom into something beautiful..."miquelet nodded again, and looked down at the small vase... it was a simple affair, with a muted grey color and a basic design... when she looked up again, the old lady was gone... looking around in all directions, she couldn't see even a small trace of her presence, save that of the vase she was holding... realizing something odd was happening, she returned home with her new treasure... little did she know just what this simple vase would do to her carefully structured life...

arriving at her home, miquelet looked around, trying to find the right spot for her new acquisition... obviously on the east side of the house, to face the rising sun, but which window got more light...? maybe the second floor study...? the windows were usually shuttered and blinded, but miquelet opened them one by one, letting light into the stagnant dark which had filled her house for so long... setting the vase on the windowsill of her impromptu library, she adjusted it carefully, lining it up with the angles of the rest of the room... finally satisfied with how it looked, she stepped back and admired it for a moment... such a beautiful flower, it was truly captivating... she had thought it would be refreshing to grow one from the start, but this was invigorating too... she left the room, and went to fetch some water for her new houseguest... filling a glass with cool liquid, she returned and gave the plant a deep drink... 'how's that...? still thirsty...?' she had read it helped plants grow to talk to them, and even though she was insufferably shy around people, she didn't feel that way about the plant at all... why should she...? the plant would never mock her, it would never ignore her... actually, it seemed much better than a human companion...

miquelet had cared for her flower for a few days, and it had seemed to enjoy the attention... it was still a dull grey with white and black undertones, such unusual colorings made it exotic, a plant miquelet had never seen before... in her readings, she had discovered that plants tended to thrive when talked to... she was never a good conversationalist, but she could read... so she had taken to reading to her plant, starting with simple books, gradually reaching an intermediate reading level... 'and the boy walked down the lane, his teddy bear in hand... the fair had been tremendous fun, but night was coming... he had to get hom, or Mother would be cross... he didn't like when Mother became cross, it made him sad...' 'oh...''hm...?' miquelet glanced up from the book, but couldn't see anyone... ah well, she thought, it must have been the wind... she returned to the book, telling the tale of how the boy had been sent to bed with no supper for being late, and how a fanciful flying peacock had taken him on a magical journey... he saw wondrous things, and met wondrous people, but had to return home before the sun came up... throghout the story, miquelet continued to hear little squeaks or something, almost as if that odd wind had a voice... finally, the story was done... she closed the book, and nearly fell out of her chair... there was something on her flower...! it was the same color as the flower, a dull grey with white and black highlights, and it was watching her with clear, bright eyes... she looked a little closer, and thought it almost looked like a small human... from the curve of it's young body, it appeared to be a female... miquelet gathered her thoughts, and addressed the small one... 'hello miss, who might you be...? my name is miquelet...' 'hello miquelet, my name is Lillium...!'perhaps because it mirrored her own tendencies, miquelet didn't even notice the little one talked in the same manner as her, a slow, sedate pace... it was watching her curiously, it's eyes taking in every detail... 'well it's very good to meet you, Lillium-chan... what manner of being are you...?' 'me...? I am a Sidhe...!'miquelet's eyes lit up at that, she had heard of the name before... if she remembered correctly, the sidhe were members of the fae folk, spirits not often seen by humans... was this one a flower spirit, bonded to the small flower it was seated upon...? did that old lady know this would happen...? what did it think of her...? 'I see...' miquelet couldn't think fo what else to say, so she closed her mouth and watched the darling little creature in silence... it stared back with equal interest, and it wasn't long at all before miquelet reached out a finger to rub against it slowly... 'heeheehee...! that tickles...!'Lillium-chan laughed happily, gyrating against the unintended tickling... upon hearing this, miquelet withdrew her hand, and Lillium-chan sat up a little straighter... 'I'm sorry...' 'oh, it's alright... so, tell me a bit more about you, miquelet...'and so she did... miquelet talked, slowly, haltingly, explaining bits and pieces about her, her house, the world itself, all manner of things... Lillium-chan listened patiently, asking questions here and there...

finally, dusk fell over the house, and both miquelet and Lillium-chan yawned... giggling a little, Lillium-chan sat on her flower, looking around her with rapt interest... as she did so, miquelet got up and put the book away... she brought a glass of water for Lillium-chan, and had a quick supper herself... even now, Lillium-chan had a hundred and one questions, which miquelet answered as best she could... but finally, it grew time to sleep, so miquelet bid Lillium-chan a good night, adjusting her vase a little to give her a better view, and then she went upstairs to her own bed... while asleep, miquelet had a dreeam... it was surreal and vague, and she didn't understand any of it... it was in a leafy world, green and beautiful... she couldn't move, but it didn't bother her that much... the sun was shining, and she was situated near a clear river... she woke up slowly, during the middle of the night, and got a drink of water before returning to sleep... she remembered her dream, but decided to think more about it in the morning... little did she know she was not the only one who had an odd dream that night... Lillium-chan had one too, and she would be sure to ask miquelet about it in the morning...

as the sun just rose over the mountains along the edge of the city, miquelet woke up... it was much earlier than she was used to, but she wasn't tired, so she got up anyways... after washing and getting dressed, she had aquick breakfast, and went to check on her new companion... Lillium-chan was already awake too, sitting anxiously on her flowerpetal throne... 'good morning Lillium-chan...' 'good morning miquelet... say, what is it when you see things in your sleep...?'miquelet was a bit surprised by a question so early in the morning... she hadn't fully woken up yet, so her mind wasn't running at full speed just yet... it took her a brief moment before she realized what Lillium-chan meant... 'do you mean a dream...?' 'a dream...? what do they do...?''they don't really do anything, it's just your mind's way of processing extra information you had before you went to sleep... sometimes they're scary, sometimes they're fun, and sometimes they're just weird... did you have one...?' 'yeah, but I can't remember it anymore...''that's perfectly alright, dreams usually disappear once you wake up, even if you try to remember them...' 'oh, I see... so what book are we going to read today...?''today...? hmm, why don't you choose...?' really...? yay...! let's see...'while Lillium-chan thought about it, miquelet took the opportunity to fetch a glass of water and give her a cool drink... she had also brought a small piece of cookie, in case Lillium-chan wanted to try it... just because she was part flower didn't mean she only wanted water each day, right...? finally, Lillium-chan chose her book, a happy tale of a pair of bunnies in the forest who rescue the other animals from a mean witch... it was a kind of long story, so miquelet read it in pieces throughout the day, stopping every hour or so... during these breaks she got up and walked around, taking Lillium-chan's vase with her... Lillium-chan enjoyed the full tour of the house, seeing all the areas she couldn't when stuck on the windowsill... but finally it grew late again, and the sun started to disappear beyond the large forest on the opposite side of the village... miquelet and Lillium-chan both had their supper then, before bidding each other a fond good night...

dawn rolled over the village, the sun slowly expanding it's influence down the lanes and streets of the little town... the windows in the east of miquelet's house had been left opened, with the blinds open to let the sun in... moments after the sun struk the small vase, a startling change took place... the petals which had closed around Lillium-chan for the night pulsed, and suddenly grew larger... within, a faint light could be seen for a brief moment, before it faded away... slowly the petals opened to bask in the sun's warmth, revealing the sudden change that had happened to Lillium-chan... no longer reminiscent of a child, her form had grown, matching that of a tiny woman with approximate dimensions of a human of twenty... her coloring remained the same, with coal black hair and ash colored skin... her eyes were a steely grey, and she had sprouted a quartet of wings, wings which were colored an intense mixture of blacks, greys and whites... these wings flapped slowly, as she grew used to them, using new muscles in her back to try to lift herself from her plant... slowly, carefully, she lifted off, her wings working hard to keep her aloft... a few minutes later, she felt confident enough to explore on her own, leaving her vase behind... her new wings a blur of activity, Lillium-chan buzzed about the house, poking into all the dark corners and narrow pathways she'd missed on miquelet's tour... all of this happened in only a half-hour, which was the amount of time it took for miquelet to wake up... as her eyelids fluttered open, she saw a small, beaming face staring directly at her...! startled, she lurched back in her bed, moving to a sitting position... then her mind caught up to her, and she thought she recognized the face looking at her mischievously... 'Lillium-chan...? is that you...?' 'yes it is, how do I look...?''you're beautiful, but what happened...?' 'I grew up...''I can see that... is this normal for flower spirits...?' 'I believe so, but I haven't met any of my brothers or sisters to know for sure...''I see... so you can move free of your vase as well...?' 'see for yourself...'with that, Lillium-chan buzzed to life, darting hither and thither around the room, past the lamp, through the open clothes drawer, under the covers, and out of miquelet's nightgown's sleeve... this tickled her tremendously, so miquelet started giggling, feeling the delicate sensation of feathery wings brushing her skin... once she calmed down, she noticed Lillium-chan was perched on her shoulder, sitting there like it was the most natural spot in the world... miquelet carefully got up, making sure not to move too fast or sudden, so Lillium-chan wouldn't fall off... getting dressed was a bit of a challenge, but she managed, even with Lillium-chan's little pranks and interferences... it seemed she had acquired a taste for mischief with her wings, but it was all in fun, so miquelet couldn't get angry...
