The most original anime I have ever seen would probably have to be Princess Tutu. I've never seen anything even relatively like it heart . The mix of classical music, the beautiful animation and art, the plot and the ballet...
<333
And out of the anime you listed in the second post... I would have to say .hack//sign. =3

I've seen many, but one that just pops in my head is Starblazers. An oldy but a goody. Another good one is Bubblegum Crisis 2032 (not 2040 cause I didn't really like that one.)

Some of the concepts in Shinzo were original, but that was only at the very start.

I havent seen many animes, but the most originals out of what I've seen............... probably Full Metal Alchemist and InuYasha. Out of the ones you said, I havent seen any of them, but I've heard about HackSign the most so yea.... HackSign for me. ninja

I think I'd have to say that Fullmetal Alchemist is the most original. I haven't seen any others that really resemble it. Though I may just not be looking hard enough. XD;

Out of the 4 you listed i'd go with .hack//sign because the whole series takes place in a game and people are controlling the characters on the outside.
Also while gohst in the shell is awesome it's not very origional to me. But that's because I love cyberpunk and what falls in that category is rather specific IMO.
And I think Paranoia Agent was origional. Albeit still obvious it's by Satoshi Kon. I noticed a fair bit of what he did in Perfect Blue in that series.

Hmmm...original, eh?
*think think think*...that's a tough one. I mean, I've seen plenty that gripped my attention enough for me to say "I gotta see what happens next" but...even those I think have major problems with story elements and characters... Revolutionary Girl was really neat...( I think people look down on it cause it was directed by the guy who did Sailor Moon...personally I think it's WAY different)... There's a specific director that I think works at Gainax that I think brings a REAL "original" look and feel to the animes that he gets put on (sometimes only for certain episodes though)...what's his name...Anno Hideako. REALLY awesome what he does...very fast paced and usually always looks good.
What else...I'm sure I got more i just can't remember any of em...there's just...SO many, right? (and not really in a GOOD way)
