the iron tablets should work really well (they did for me in my first pregnancy), although you may find that they cause you to suffer a bit more with constipation! Lots of veggies contain iron (one of the obvious ones being spinich), so try eating lots of spinich! Other than that, I don't know what else to suggest.

I had relatively low iron when I was pregnant, nothing like that though.
Some things you can eat that have iron:
Broccoli Spinach (any dark green/leafy plant)
Baked potatos (You need to eat the skin, I know it's not everyone's favorite but all the iron is stored in the skin)
Red Meat (of course I can understand if it's something you don't eat, but when we're talking seriously low iron levels here, it's time to start thinking about getting some iron)
Also, make sure all the cereals you buy are iron fortified,

When I had to be put on iron tablets, my doctor recommended that I also add at least 500 milligrams of Vitamin C to my diet daily. It makes it easier for your body to absorb the iron.

everything Nopen said... and don't forget that you need to make sure not to have dairy or calcium with your iron, and iron rich foods, it messes up the absorbtion.

well, congratulations on your pregnancy!
everything everyone else said... also the following:
nuts dried beans and peas eggs (yolk especially) raisins, prunes, dates, figs, other dried fruits
if you can deal with it, organ meats are also really high in iron but they make me want to puke myself.

I'm anemic and have been taking iron tablets for almost ten years now. They are gross and make you sick to your stomach but what really helps is having vitamin c (I think it's c or d. can't rember) when you take them. I suggest drinking more orange juice, espcially when you take your pill. The vitaminc helps to absorb the iron so that your body takes in more of it. I had really really low iron like you and once I started taking orange juice with my pills and more often it worked.
I also would suggest the veggies and foods that Nopenn suggested.

And other fishes like tuna you should eat in moderation no more than the equivalent of two cans a week. This is because of the amount of Mercury found in fish.

Mercury in Fish is a danger that pregnant women should watch out for. All Fish carry Mercury and it can build up in dangerous amounts for an unborn child.

Congrats xd
Everyone's advice has said it all but I just wanted to add that when I was pregnant with my first I seriously craved red meat. My iron was a little low but not for long.
Try to enjoy your pregnancy...the baby will be in your arms in no time wink

I had not idea that eating fish when you are expecting might be harmful to the baby we ate fish all the time my mom told me it was good for the baby thank goodness jordan came out healthy.. but on the subject if low iron levels i was told i had some blood abnormality but my levels were normal but they always have tested dangerously low which suck but i alwasy try to eat lots of veggies like everyone eles said and i took iron pills along with prenate's that were loaded with iron
so my advice is eat a lot of green veggies and take iron

As a general guide, the larger the fish, the more Mercury it is likely to contain. Seeing as you have special dietary needs due to being low in iron and pregnant, you might want to think about seeing a nutritionist? Most community health centers here have one come in for one day a week, and some pregnancy clinics do too. It would be well worth one visit, just to get an idea of what's right for you. Good Luck!! 3nodding
