I play the tenor sax but the worst thing is... I am allergic to something they put in the wooden reeds. So now I use either plastic or fibracell! They cost alot more but the last along time! Its kind of akward to get used to but it sounds great! Anyone else have cool reed stories... or has anyone used the types I said above?

Plastic reeds dont sound good unless up are playing jazz. Ive played a plastic reed and it only worked in jazz band. In concert band it makes my instrument sound off pitch. And its not me. Anywho, thats weird that you cant play wooden reeds. I feel bad for you. I would hate that.

i agree with the previous post
plastic reeds ARE the WORST reeds to have for concert..you will never get the legit saxophone sound..maybe it was the kind of reed you had that you were allergic to..i recommend gonzales reeds size 3-4

I have a plastic reed...size 3, but I don't use it anymore because I don't get the same sound as a good ol' wooden reed...

The first reed I ever played on a tenor sax was a plastic reed (I didn't know better at the time. It was what my band teacher handed me)
It was like night and day when I switched to a wooden one. I can't stand a plastic any more. It might be the brand of reeds your using.
But I think your problem might actually be the thickness of your reed. When ever I move up to a higher reed size or practice on a new reed to heavily, by bottom lip gets really really chapped and red. For a week or so, it feels uncomfortable, but I just down a butt load of water and put some chap stick on when I'm not playing and it gets better fast.
