THIS NAME IS NOT SMART

PostPosted: Tue May 09, 2006 11:58 pm

Someone suggested that we start up a doodle pad. No one did yet, so I AM DOING IT NOW.

Feel free to post whatever crazy crap you want here, and give comments and critique on whatever you see.

The reasons why you should post your sketches:

- Every artist has sketches, or work they don't feel is postable lying around, and it would be a shame to see all that stuff turn to dust.

- I, and I am sure there are others who feel the same, find sketches the most educational. Seeing how an artist put somthing together is the best way to figure out how to do the same.

- This is a great way to keep guild activity up. It's esay to scan any ol' pic you drew and throw it up here. Also; some artists might not want to create a thread to show off a simple doodle, but still might want to share it with the f**-comunity.

- THIS IS FUN ):<

Anyhow, I hope others jump in and post some stuff. I can't really think of any reason not to. I hope that sums it up... I don't make the rules, so if you have any questions, please direct them at someone important.
(sorry for the spelling errors that I am sure I missed... what can I say, I am retarded)

I definately think your pencil work is stronger than the ink...which is a bit childish and sloppy and really doesn't serve the stylization at all.

It is more fun to see the sketches where you draw with simpler geometric shapes, but use a but of shading to give it form. Like in the hand and sort of in the torso.

I'll be making good use of this thread for sure... Although it would be nice if people really made the effort to comment on the stuff that get's posted, instead of only posting pictures.

I think it's enough to say you like it or dont, but lets keep the feedback happening biggrin

I'm making this a painting. I'm doing it on a sheet of canvas, it's quite rough so I'm thinking it might give a sort of feeling of papyrus..sort of. I'm not going to try and make it look old, I'm just going to paint it with an ancient egyptian flavour. Lot's of yellows, blues and greens. It'll be pretty.

Since I'm in the middleof exams right now (which are, bizzarely, going quite well..) this won't get done for a while. I like the face. 3nodding

I've been admiring your current signature. It's sweet as.

Ficklefiend: The face look pretty nice, but the rigidness of the body pose and flaws in anatomy are really rather noticeable.

If you plan to paint over this image, ther's no need to refine the sketch as much as on the face, but you should still work on getting things worked out. The proportions are sort of diminishing the further from the face the drawing gets. Her arms could at least be posed somewhat in front of her.

And thank you for the comment on my signature. I sort of just doodled it up for that purpose and put it on my DA, kinda pissed i saved too soon after the resize though.

This name is not smart> I love your style. It's so... refreshing. I like the foreshortening in the arm and leg on your faceless body. smile

Ficklefiend> There's something about the face that doesn't sit well with me. >_> "Uncanny valley", anyone? Although uncanny valley is referring to robots and the like. o_o

Page boy> I. LOVE. YOUR. PENCILS.

You've just got such nice control that I can't help but feel jealous. XD It doesn't help that I love your fashion sense, too.

------
I wish I could post my pencil sketches, but I lack a scanner, and my digicam doesn't do it justice. (re: shaky hand = teh_stink). But... enjoy some pchats. ^^

Yowza.

kheleksul: I dig all of the pics you posted, they are very free formed, and STYLISH. But that last one sticks out. Just... wow. I dig.

Page boy: Awesome stuff... I can't really think of what to say other then I your cloths-drawing-skills. :b keep it up.
(I want to see more of your sharpie arts, btw) <- I hope it was you who was posting them threads WAY back.

ficklefiend: Your off to a good start, but she is in need of work. Her shoulders are far too befy, and her stance is unnatural. Maybe cross her arms infront of her, and fixing her shoulders is just redrawing a line :b
(I removed that other picture because it's old, and page boy is right... it's ugly :b)

OK! Number one is kind of like a self portrait. Except I look almost nothing like that, dont own a shirt with a screeming oval, and have never sat on a stool before. (lie!)

This is a 'character?' of mine. Lets just say he is awesome. KNIFEBAT!

And this, I made with all of you in mind :b

Khel knows more about rendering light an value than i do and it SUCKS. DDD:
Hey, get like a miniature table top tripod for your digicam. THEY ARE GOOD.

Paraaade: I love the second sketch....again with the sharp lines nyuhnyuh nyuh.

The head on the self portrait...well it seems like non of the lines really connect like they do on other parts of the sketch. :X Do you know the Comics called Mr. I? he looks exactly like the guy on your shirt. it's a french comic, but there are no words so anyone can appreciate.

Hey Page Boy; Did you drink like 15 cups of coffee?? :b

Yah, the second pucture is hands-down the best, but the first one I felt I needed to draw, because he/I am doing somthing that normal people do, and not flailing, or exploding like most of my pictures, hehe
(do you think that the crazy prospective worked out? I am worried that people might find it a bit too... out of place.)

And did you ever hear of Fred the Clown? Thats also a wordless comic that kicks serious a**.

Yeah, I do see the problems. Further than the face you can see I have just sketched out a quick idea for the pose. I'm not painting over this, I'm re-drawing it completely.

I wasn't sure about the arms, I wanted her pose to be very rigid because that's what they are drawn like on the pyramid walls and stuff, but once I had done it I realised it just looked like I couldn't draw hands and I had hidden them like so many people seem to do...

I'll update on this anyway, as it goes along.

I love the fact, Pageboy, that you can draw so many different characters and costumes but the faces and expressions always look right, it's not just the same thing, you know? You've got range man.

I, umm, I have noooo idea what uncanny valley is biggrin but she does look a bit vacant doesn't she?

I think I gave her a squint. neutral

also, I love that last black+white sketch. It's sexy.
