I gave a speech to my youth group about holiness and modesty, I thought I would share it with you all 3nodding

Part one - why do we hide the holiness?

We live in a world today where nearly everything is for "show". A person gets a new mercedes, a new rolex watch, a new tv set - he's proud of his new items, so he shows it off to his friends. You can see people showing off their looks, their clothing, their money, their body- nearly everything is shown today. On the other hand, if you look at judaism, you see the opposite - all the things we hold dear and holy, we hide! The sefer torah, we hide in the aron kodesh, we try not to stand out, we hide mans relationship with his wife, the kadosh hakdoshim, everything we cherish and hold dear - its hidden!

Why is this? Aren't we proud of what we've got? Are we embarrased of our holy things???

Of course not, but then again, why do we hide them? If we really were proud of these things, shouldn't we show it off to the world that we have such an amazing thing?

The answer lies in how we understand "tzniut" (modesty). Most people think tzniut is used to describe woman's clothing. That is only half correct - sefer mashlei describles: "And the wise shall be modest". Our sages learned from here that modesty is not limited to only one gender. In sefer micha it says "And what am I asking of you?... only that you be modest in the path you take..." - meaning that modesty is not only your clothing, but your actions, and take of the world.

Okay, so what if the answer lies in hiding our actions? Why do we have to hide the holy torah??

Well, everyone wants to be seen for what they really are. No one wants to be seen for their money or their good looks. A person (a normal sane person) wants to be seen for his personality, his look upon the world and his values. If someone likes you for the new car you got, all they really are seeing is the car, not you driving behind it. You would be hidden by a wall of lies - and no-one would see you for who you are.

The same goes for the torah, just like we hide our actions and items, we would be seen for something we are not - we dont want the same to happen to the torah. If we were to parade about it in the open, we would be missing the main part of the torah, its inner world. The main part of the torah is inside, the true beauty is when its hidden, and we dive into its depths.

We don't need anyone to confirm that our torah is one and true. All those people that show off their stuff is because they need someone else to confirm that what they have is truely good. If you know that what you have is real, and true, you don't need anyone else to confirm it.

part 2 - what IS holy, and what is not? (comming soon).

ncsy released a pampletat one of their recent conventions which was very similar to this. it dealt with the 10 most common questions by jewish teenagers, ranging from "why can't i talk to girls" to "what are shadim". if anyone wants, i can type it up for them.

i must say nathan, this is very well-written, though.
