In your orchestra, was there always one person who was so full of him/her self and stuck up that it drove you insane? Ugh, it was so bad at the district orchestra festival. These three chicks found it absolutely necessary (before the preformance) to practice on the podium as loud as possible so everyone could see them. They were like, the Plastics of the music world. It made me die inside. stare

I can relate. It's good to show off for the audience sometimes, but there are always show-offs who think they are amazing that usually aren't. I guess we just have to live with them?

I can immagine that you don't like them...
But now another question:
Did you ever join a situation like this:
A teacher who's totally for you and against the girl (or boy) with whom you have lessons. The teacher always say that you're good, because you have a talent for it and hardly have to practise. And to the other the teacher says that she/he doesn't practise enough and so on. One day you become your notes. She says: "Actually I never give a 10 (the highest and best note in the Netherlands) to pupils, so you get a 9,5. And you...well, I should give you a 1, but I know you can do better, so you get a 5. (Thats still low.) How would you feel if you're the pupil with the 9,5?
I was the pupil with the 9,5 and I felt terrible!

Keep in mind something in this situation: the show offs are probably (Not definitely. They could just be jerks. But I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. xd ) scared. For example, I know someone who was told that in order to succeed, he would have to banish all of his fear. To never be afraid, to play with confidence. Well, how do you compensate for fear? Sometimes, playing as loud and as brash as you possibly can before the pressure comes, to prove to yourself, and everyone else, that you CAN do it.
That might be it. And again, they might just be losers, or something else entirely. There's usually a reason, though.

I don't have this in my orchestra, but I know what you're talking about because I've seen it in many others. Try to ignore people like that, eventually they will make a big mistake, and no one will ever forget it. wink

I remember last year when i was in the intermediate orchesra at my high school that there was this senior(we we're all freshman) and he was there to help us. He always got there before us and played things we couldn't dream of playing. He just intimidated us.

hmm well as much as it doesnt sound good to show off.....it does help the player alot...why not show off the talent they have? Why keep them selves with everyone else or in the dark? Because it makes them look better and not you?
i dont like anymore then you, but should some one hold them selves back just for some one else to feel better? life sucks....oh well... that is all

When we had a new a student in my orchestra class(I'm in middle school), he would always show off by playing songs that weren't taught to us yet and acting like he should be in advance orchestra(we were all in intermediate). I was like show offey!! But then he started to be more like us after a few months.

what's worse is people who aren't any good and try to show off anyway, or who are good and purposely play really badly and loudly. there wre a few of those in my school orchestra this year.

*is beginning to worry if Dragonstar has been acting "show-offy", not on purpose* Sometimes I just get frustrated with reading music (I'm not that good at reading music) and it really helps me to play something good that I KNOW how to do first, to boost my morale and keep me going. Also I just enjoy playing, and of course I enjoy playing my best. It's my favorite thing to do. I love to play the best I can of the best songs I know. I rarely get an audience, but I love it when I get an appreciative one, and I only hope now that this hasn't been mistaken for egotism or showing off. I just simply love making music.

Now I'm worried. I think I am guilty of this...by accident.

your method is actually quite logical...and i sometimes do the same when i get frustrated. i either play a song that i know pretty well or make something up so that it sounds good....
