Kayne couldn't help it. Staying away from something he loved so much was murder, so he found himself perched on a stone bench not too far from the dojo but fairly well secluded by the surrounding bushes. Sitting with his knees up to his chest and his arms wrapped loosely around them, he was just watching with a lit cigarette dangling precariously from his lips. It had seemed like forever since he had last seen Jess, but in reality only a week had passed. He just wanted to see her now and he knew she'd be around sooner or later, so he waited as the smoke from the end of his cigarette curled lazily above his head.

Jess was on her way to check up on club activities when she spotted him. Sat watching the dojo. Hugging her arms she contemplated turning round and going back to the faculty building. She smirked at herself, sitting wih the idiots in the Lit department seemed more favourable than running into Kayne.
This was rediculous, she was an adult. She didn't need to play these games. Taking a deep breath she walked up behind him, arms folded. Watching the smoke curl up from his cigarette. Did he smoke? She shrugged and stopped just behind him.
"Such a filthy habit Shaidey. I expected better from you." She said in a mock stern voice.

Kayne jumped at the stern voice behind him, sucking in a lungful of smoke entirely too quickly. Coughing uncontrollably, he turned around to face her. He blinked blankly at her clothes. He really wasn't going to complain, she looked rather nice, but it wasn't her. Finally managing to suck in some pure air, Kayne stopped coughing and gave his head a shake. Smirking he put his cigarette back to his lips.
"Aye, well... changing yourself for someone is such a sell out move. I expected better from you," he grinned, leaning back, draping his arms over the back of the bench.

She smiled weakly at the comment and sat down next to him on the bench. "I look like an idiot don't I?" She said shaking her head. The truth was, her last job had been much more formal. Too formal for Aquila, to dumb it down she had been trying to mix smart skirts and trousers with more casual tops. The result was a fashion nightmare. Not to mention that she was so exhausted by her increased training sessions she didn't really care what she pulled out of the wardrobe in the morning.
"Can I scab a f** off you?" She asked, leaning back and crossing her legs at the knee. She could do this, it was just like nothing had happened ... wasn't it?

Kayne reached into his coat pocket and pulled out his pack of cigarettes. He shook one out and offered it to her with a smile.
"No. Not an idiot. Just not like your self," he said taking a second cigarette out and slipping it behind his ear. He replaced the pack back to his pocket. She seemed to be doing alright. Not quite as uptight as Ra had described. Digging in his pocket again, he produced his lighter. Dropping the cigarette between his lips to the ground, he snuffed it out with the toe of his shoe. Giving her another smile, he pulled the cigarette he had placed behind his ear and placed it between his lips to light it, then offered her a light as well.

"Well this is Aquila, where being yourself is aparently a crime." She said with a small snort of laughter. Maybe if she kept smiling he wouldn't notice how tired she was, that she had been training till midnight and getting up at three to start again.
She avoided his eyes as he lit her cigarette. Sitting back again she removed it from her lips and allowed a thin line to float into the air. "How are your injuries?" God this small talk was infuriating.

Kayne snorted in response to her first comment. So true, he thought. He searched her face as she leaned closer to dip the end of her cigarette into the flame he offered her. Truth was she looked like s**t and the fact that she avoided him with her eyes had not gone unnoticed. Flipping the lid to his lighter closed, he returned it to his pocket and draped his arms along the back of the bench again.
"Getting better ever so slowly. I just wish I had done more to them to make them pay for this. I can't stand this sitting around doing nothing. I can barely even kick a soccer ball around," he said with irritation. He watched her for a moment, fighting the urge to move his arm from the bench to around her shoulders. Maybe coming by had been a bad idea. He looked away for a moment, then smiled again.
"You look like shyte Sensei. What have you been doing to yourself?" he asked bluntly.

"Nothing I don't deserve." She said. Swallowing the urge to break down and looking off into the distance. Focusing her attention onto her cigarette she tapped some of the ash onto the floor and sighed. "And you have to stop telling women they look like shyte. It's quite offensive."
She smirked though it had little amusement behind it. "I hope Cirrus didn't give you too much of a hard time when you got back." She gave him a sideways glance. "Or vice versa."

Kayne studied her face. "I only tell you you look like shyte, and only when you do," he said with a weak smile. He was trying to continue the rappor they had before everything had gone to pot, but obviously it wasn't going to be that simple. He took a slow drag on his cigarette and let the smoke stream out slowly from between his lips as he thought about Cirrus. He returned Jess' glance then looked back out to the distance.
"She thought she was going to start something with me when I got back to the room. But I finished it. It's the quietest it's been in that room since we moved in," he replied flatly. The truth was, Cirrus had tried to apologize to him, but he wasn't hearing it. Not yet at least. She had cost him too much.

Jess nodded and held her cigarette up, watching the dull glow as the paper burned slowly. "Yep, well. Thanks for the observation. I've stepped up my training a bit. You know, stress and all that. Besides, looking good was never my thing anyway."
"I'm sorry." She said in relation to his and Cirrus's silence. "Hopefully you two will sort things out. She was only acting out of concern." She shrugged again putting the cigarette back in her mouth so she didn't say something lame like 'I miss you.'

Kayne glanced over at Jess with concern. She already trained with an intense schedule. How could she up it even more and not be hurting herself? Looking away he took another drag on his cigarette, pointedly ignoring the Cirrus issue. He just wasn't interested in bringing that up again. Not now. Not when Jess was sitting right next to him. Absently he shifted the arm that was draped on the bench behind her and lightly caressed her shoulder before dropping it back down to the bench. He wished he could ask her to take him to the beach. But he knew she wouldn't.
"Just be careful with your training Jess. Please don't hurt yourself," he said, glancing at her, then down at his feet.

As he caressed her shoulder Jess bit her lip, she could feel her eyes burning. She wanted to tell him everything, how no matter how hard she tried she couldn't get rid of the sick feeling inside. She was in desperate need of someone to talk to about her fears, but finding someone who wouldn't judge her was impossible.
"I know what I'm doing." She said softly before taking another drag on the cigarette. "I just want this feeling to go away."

Kayne looked up as she spoke. At her final words he wanted desperately to wrap his arms around her and kiss away the fear that was in her voice. Fear just did not suit her.
"Obviously you don't know what you're doing, and neither do I. Otherwise we wouldn't be sitting here like this, would we?" he asked rhetorically.
"Please Jess... talk to me," he said softly, shifting to turn his body towards hers.

Dropping the cigarette on the floor she crushed it with the heel of her shoes and looked up shaking her head at his movement towards her. "You know we can't talk here." She said flatly gesturing towards the dojo. "Because if I tell you what I'm scared of, I'm going to get upset. If someone sees us they'll know." She said looking into his eyes. She hoped the fear in her own green ones would convey a little of what she was feeling.

Kayne looked deep into her eyes for a moment, then glanced around. He dropped his own cigarette down to the ground and crushed it.
"Then would you like to go somewhere where no one would see us?" he asked softly. "Please Jess? If I can't be with you, at least let me be here for you," he pleaded gently.
