I am sure many of you have read the Sunflower

For those of you who havent it is a true story about
a dying SS man begging a Jew from a labor camp to frorgive him for all his crimes.

I am havingtrouble ansering this question for myself but I would like to hear your answer:
Would you have forgiven the Nazi?

If it was at the end of the war, with nothing to loose, no.

If it was in the middle of the war, while they were still going strong, and he had what to sacrafice, then yes.

It just shows whether his sorrow would be real.

I....don't know.

I'd like to say that I would be able to, that everything would be fine, and I wouldn't hold a grudge.

But in all honesty, I don't think I could. SS men killed thousands, millions, enormous amounts of people. They didn't care about lives- they just did what they were ordered to without any emotion at all. So, to be truthful, no. Sometimes sorry just doesn't cut it. sweatdrop

I would forgive that man. Though, I never went through that kind of suffering, so maybe it'd be different then.

But take me, as I am now, then yes definitely. Hate and refusing to understand other people is what causes things like the Holocaust to happen. If we can't learn to forgive (and NEVER forget) then horrible things like that will just keep on happening. (Well, they do happen, still..)

Yes but this was an SS man who was severly crippled, blinded and could die at any moment.
He couldn't even stand up.
'sorry' was all he could do

well, he might just be apologizing because he didn't want to feel guilty when he died. He might just be apologizing because he's going to die, so he figures, "why not," and doesn't actually mean it.

Don't know the circumstance- never read the book sweatdrop

man that is one tough question

That must be some book too. How can I put this now... I wonder what that Jew mustve done.
He mustve felt that apologizing would make it seem like he's speaking for the whole jewish nation, saying it was okay and hes forgiven.
I couldnt say that. If the SS nazi was in pain and was about to die, id say something that would maybe ease his pain andor mind.

Sure, its important to forgive and forget, thats a big part of moving on in life. If you dont forgive you wallow in the past and keep on hurting. But i think in this case... its good to never totally put the holocost behind us.
Its always a very big part of the Jewish history, nation, heart.

The SS men will and cannot ever be forgiven. No matter how grief stricken they are, that just cant happen. Im saying this because I just cant let the names of all those Jews that suffered, that were tortured, that hurt and prayed and cried and were killed in cold blood be washed over with just some apology. Its an insult to their memory.

I don't think forgiving them is the same thing as absolving them of all that sin, and pain. That's G-d's job.

Ours is to be human, and be better people than they are and offer forgiveness.

It's sort of like how this one time, when I was in middle school, we had a Holocaust survivor come visit and talk to our class. Someone asked him if he hates Germans for what they did. He said no, and his words have stuck with me all this time.

Well bet you guys didnt know this, or if you did good for you, but my Grand Father from my fathers side was a Nazi Youth, and his father was a Nazi. So yea i forgive him i think. Comon when your brainwashed into thinking this way, you dont really have a choice.

Forgiveness is not an option, it's a requirement. I forgave them before they ever committed their acts.
