Chris Dawes

PostPosted: Wed May 03, 2006 12:35 pm

It was late in the day, the sun was slowly going down across the horizon. Chris was walking out of the boarding houses, having finally unpacked all her things and organizing them as she pleased, she had decided to get out and take a look around.

It was really a rather, different place. Pulling the hood of her cloak back, she quietly takes in the scenery, somewhat awestruck by what was presented before her. Her hair bristles forward slightly as a soft wind kicks up. Tucking a tress behind her ear, she turns back towards the boarding house.

She thinks back to her home. The tall buildings, the cobblestone streets. It could not compare to what she has seen so far of this place. Not that she has really seen much at all.

Generally, she was looking forward to the next few months. It was certainly going to be.. an experience. Part of her wishes, however, that she was still home, and the person who was meant to be here was in her stead.

This was his dream, not hers. She was simply living it out for him.

After having spent a day in the labs working on Rowan, Alphonse decided that it would be a good time to go home and prepare dinner. Having had the dog locked up in a recovery room upstairs, he leaves the building and locks the door behind him. His apron bears fresh blood stains, one of them even vaguely hand-shaped.

Looking ahead of him, he sees the vague outline of a woman in the distance. "Alva...?" Moreau calls, sliding his glasses up the bridge of his nose and approaching her.

There's only one woman on this island, right?

Chris pays little attention to the voice on the winds. She didn't recognize the name, nor did she really think to believe it would be directed at her. No, instead she simplys seats herself on a nearby rock and folds her hands over her lap, continuing to take in the scenery.

A moment passes, however, and she finally realizes there are footsteps coming in her direction. This, was highly unexpected. She turns her face and sees the familar man from the docks.

Dr. Alphonse Moreau.

... Oh dear.

...wait. That's not Alva.

That's not Alva at all.

Alphonse stops in his tracks, hesitantly holding up a hand with his index finger raised. Furrowing his brows in confusion, he opens his mouth to speak.

"Woman," he barks, an annoyed and confused tone in his voice, "how did you get here? I don't remember ever seeing you off the boat, and you're not the Norsewoman. Explain yourself."

He honestly hoped this wasn't another stubborn tart. Maybe it was one of the new arrivals' wives that had stowed away?

At least she doesn't carry a cropwhip with her at all times.

Chris quickly stands up from the rock and does a light curtsey. Once she was standing straight, her hands clasped over her skirt.

"Doctor Moreau... we met briefly the other day I am grieved to inform you..." her tone was soft and slow. She carefully was choosing her words.

"At the docks... I am Chris Dawes." she pulls her hood back up, wrapping the cloak tighter. Better to show the familar garb which she was adorned with when she had arrived.

Alphonse squints, turning his head slightly off to the side. He's damned confused, but at least she seems to be polite. "I could have sworn I had corresponded with a man when we were writing," he says, a hint of disbelief in his voice.

"I... I see." He shoves a hand into his pocket, the other holding on to the wire frame of his glasses. While he had a mind to scream at her for being a woman, he held his tongue -- after all, she had been rather polite and obedient when she got off the boat, like a good woman should.

"While this is the second time I have been decieved by a woman to work with me on this project, you have left a good impression on me so it would be impolite for me to chastize you for it," he shrugs. "Very well."

Chris lets her hood down again, feeling it thump lightly against her cloak. She bites her lip daftly as he mentions the man.

"You have my sincerest of apologies Doctor, however you are not entirely incorrect in your first assumptions..." Christine was not one adequated to lying. Largely, in fact, not when the truth was mentioned, even in simple passing.

"At one point, you were corresponding with a man..." Chris sighs slightly,

"He, however, passed away over a year ago." she pauses a moment.

"I have been left to finish his objectives."

Alphonse nods, listening and stroking his beard in thought. "Ah, I see," he says, his expression neutral. "How noble of you to carry on his spirit and work... I take it you are his widow, then?" He bows his head, putting his arms behind his back.

"I am sorry for your loss. I hope you will be able to do the late Mr. Dawes and his work some justice." He looks up, offering a small smile. "What you are doing is very respectable. You likely would not be able to get away with such things in England -- I'm a man and I couldn't -- so be glad that you are here."

He should introduce Chris to Alva later. Maybe that will show the harlot what a real woman acts like.

Chris nods her head as Alphonse speaks. "I am his widow, yes. I thank you for your kinds words and assure you I will be putting my all into this project. My husband left extensive dialouges of his work, and I have learned much from him in both life... and in death." she is very pleased he had not taken a harsher way with her.

He was very correct. In England their was no chance for her to ever do a thing like this. The noblemen would have nothing of it. A woman was meant for housekeeping and babymaking, not ... this.

"I am very honoured to be here Doctor, and I thank you once more." her lessons in ettiquette, she though, were of more use than she would have imagined them to be.

A little politeness can go a long way with Alphonse, and it shows. "Well, do remember that you are always welcome here," he says, nodding, "I hope you find your life on the island to be a very enriching learning experience."

"I like you, Ms. Dawes. You know your place and I respect that quality in a woman." He extends a hand with the intent to shake, smiling.

"I thank you again for your kindness and generosity Doctor Moreau." she takes the extended hand, and returns the smile with her own.

"I am certain I will find the island to be most interesting..."

"Oh, you shall, I assure you," the man promises, offering a firm handshake. "This experiment will be the likes of which the scientific community has never seen before. It was too revolutionary for England, see, so that is why I took it to a private island."

Once the handshake finishes, Alphonse takes a step back and half-bows. "Well, Ms. Dawes, I should go home to prepare myself some dinner as it has been a long day of work, but it was pleasant to meet and speak with you. Do have a good evening, take care and God bless." He straightens up, waving his hand and departing towards the small house between the boarding house and the laboratory building.

"I do not doubt that Doctor." she returns his half bow with a shallow curtsey.

"Have a good evening, God bless." she repeats the last part in kind, watching the man walk off towards him home.

Standing their for a minute, she looked off towards the boarding house. A content smile crept over her face and she made her way towards the building. She had a book to read through.
