I started out liking him. I was glad that Buffy fell in with him, but about halfway through his time on the show, he just started getting annoying. I was glad when he left.

He can be okay when he's commando mode... he has a few good lines, but on my friends' character points scale he was at -97.5 when he left the show. He felt like he walked out of the 1950s... or Iowa which I guess he did... same thing.
FHL, I actually liked Ben until he turned out to be a selfish b*****d but that was towards the end when he was starting to be infected by Glory.

BakaTulip FHL, I actually liked Ben until he turned out to be a selfish b*****d but that was towards the end when he was starting to be infected by Glory. I think I just didn't like him b/c Buffy had just broken up w/ someone and she wasn't ready to be w/ anyone else (and most of her viewers weren't ready for her to be with someone else either). He seemed like a nice enough guy at first, but just not special enough to be with her. and then when he did turn out to be "special," I really thought that he shouldn't be with her.

I didn't want them to be together at all. (I'm a Buffy/Angel shipper all the way...with a slight like of the non canon Buffy/Faith...but that's another story.) I just thought Ben was a nice guy and he was quite helpful to Buffy for a good period of time. And she came to the conclusion on her own that she wasn't ready to have a new boyfriend yet. Good Buffy.

Riley CAN be funny sometimes...but he's also too bland...and too stupid and can't handle a woman being stronger than he is.

Actually, I was always rooting for Riley. Mainly it's because he's the only "normal" person in the entire series who can compete with buffy as a real hero. Everyone else either has superpowers or spells or something that makes them more than human, but Riley was just a normal guy fighting to make a difference as best he could. The only other person like that in the series was Principal Wood, who didn't come in until right near the end of the series and who I was also a huge fan of. I guess Xander could kind of be considered a hero, but not in the same way. He's a lover, not a fighter. Basically, Riley and Principal Wood represent something that the series would have really lacked without them, which is the idea of normal humans fighting back, without gimmicks, without powers, with nothing but grit, determination, and sheer toughness. Another good example of this is Gunn, from Angel. He's another favorite character of mine, for similar reasons.
I certainly infinitely preferred Riley to Angel, who I always saw as a whiny, brooding, boring character with no flavor, at least until he got his own show, which is when he really became cool. It took David Boreanaz a couple of seasons to learn how to act, in my humble opinion. blaugh When the two of them fought (I think it was in "The Yoko Factor", but I may be wrong...) I was totally rooting for Riley to kick Angels a**, even though I knew it would never happen.
Anyway... yeah. I like Riley. biggrin
