Kayce squirmed ineffectually in her seat, eyeing the lobby of the dance studio. She had not lodged a protest when her mother had signed her up for ballet lessons, but she had missed the small detail about having to wear tights and a leotard. The pink tights were rather restrictive, though they fit perfectly. She didn't like them... at all. The little pink ballet shoes on her feet kept her toes from wiggling much. How in Gaia was she supposed to run with them on?!

And that didn't even begin to cover her complaints about the leotard and skirt! She and Amyla had debated for what seemed like an eternity about the color, and finally Amyla had let her get a dark navy blue one, as opposed to the pink one that the parent had previously wanted for her. The skirt was navy blue as well, and Kayce felt ridiculously overdressed in it. Not to mention, Amyla had also forced her to tie her long, dark hair back in a ponytail to keep it from her face. In all, the young fae was a bit more than just a little grumpy.

She wriggled again in her seat, crossing her arms over her chest in a rare gesture of annoyance. She wanted to learn to dance. Oh yes, she wanted very much to put her grace and precision to good use. However, to sacrifice her dignity and wear this ridiculous outfit was quite the limit. These lessons had better be worth it, and if any of the girls even thought of teasing her... well, she wouldn't think about that.

Varian had been suspicious when Aletea first brought up the subject of ballet lessons. But after thinking through it for a while, he decided that it was an appropriate spenditure of his time: afterall, it wasn't like she was trying to put him in something like football. This was something that he had watched on tv occassionally, and he liked the idea of reaching that sort of perfection.

The little blonde even didn't have much of a problem with the pale blue outfit - just leotard and tights for the boys - since he viewed it as something to achieve his end goal. But if anyone tried making fun of him for it, one could expect a rather vicious response. Though for him, that could just mean clawing their eyes out.

He'd even considered filing his nails to a point, so that nobody would even think of trying.

The fae surveyed the lobby as he entered, and noted something rather important. He was the only boy in the room. A sour look settled onto his face as he made his way over to empty chair.

Kayce's expression of discontent turned into one of utter disdain as another new ballerina entered the lobby and headed for the place's only empty chair, which happened to be right next to hers. Her pointed ears twitched a bit out of annoyance. She had purposely picked this seat so that no one would sit next to her. A table on one side, an empty chair on the other-- she liked that. A table on one side, and a prissy girl in a chair on the other-- that just wouldn't do.

To her surprise (and dismay), the creature that made its way toward the chair was not female. At least... she thought it wasn't, but it looked sort of feminine to her. He wasn't wearing a skirt, though, and wore a masculine sort of nasty look, so the faegirl concluded he must be male and very grumpy.

He did look rather funny, though, being the only boy in the room. Why was he doing ballet? Were the other exercise programs full? Or did he choose this? She almost smiled at that thought. Almost.

"You're a boy," she stated without any inflection as he came closer. It wasn't a question or an insult. Simply a statement.

Varian, on high alert for potential humiliation and spite, narrowed his eyes at Kayce.

"Yes, I am."

A challenge in his voice, practically daring her to make a joke. When he had seen ballet on television, there had been male ones - but there weren't any boys in here. It made him feel...outnumbered. Vastly.

Well, he wasn't a prissy girl. But some people might consider him a prissy boy.

One could tell from the blonde's expression, that he fully prepared Kayce to make some joke: and that he was fully prepared to go after her for it. Whether that was verbally or physically, who knows...

"You sound upset. Would you rather be a girl?" Kayce asked curiously, a bit bemused by his defensiveness. She had simply stated that he was, in fact, male.

Still, it confused her as to why a boy had chosen to do ballet. Boys were, as far as she had seen, not very graceful. They liked to climb and run and tackle each other, not do dance. The look on her new 'friend's' face stopped her from directly asking, though. She would be content to wait for an answer whenever he felt mannerly enough to supply it.

She did make a mental note that his outfit looked more feminine than hers. Light blue? Ick! It wasn't quite as bad as pastel yellow or that terribly girly shade of pink that her mother had wanted for her, but light blue was certainly more feminine than dark blue. She wouldn't tell him that, though. Not unless he said something first.

It was quite possible that Varian was more girly then many girls; he was, after all, more beautiful then them.

No, of course not - he wasn't vain. Not at all.

Yet at the question, a wrinkled nose was the answer Kayce got, along with a scornful phrase, "Of course not."

He just barely avoided saying what was actually going through his mind, in the hopes of being polite. Well, being polite in the Varian-esque way; not directly insulting the person with whom one was speaking. Though doing in a sneaky manner was perfectly exceptable.

With a sudden spot of curiousity, the blonde eyed her. While he didn't compare the femininity of their outfits, he did notice that - unlike most of the little girls in the room - she wasn't wearing pink.

"Do you like being a girl?"

Whilst Varian expressed his firm desire to not be female, Kayce harbored her own doubts. He looked like a girl, dressed like a girl... probably danced like a girl too. He was an odd boy, that was for sure. It occurred to her a moment later that he probably though her odd too. She was not very girlish in speech, if the high-pitched giggling sounds made by the other girls in the room were representative of the sounds made by all girls. Kayce never giggled. It was horribly undignified. She laughed on occasion, and she smiled too. Giggles, though, were for girly-girls.

His question startled her. Did she like being a girl? Humph... what a stupid question! "Yes," she replied without elaborating, plucking a tiny piece of lint from her skirt. "Do you like being a boy?"

"Yes, of course I do."

Why not? Being a girl wasn't much different. Or at least, Varian wouldn't act any different if he was a girl. He wasn't someone who even spent much time with children, so he didn't even really understand the stereotypical 'gender roles' - but if he had, his answer could have been different.

The last thing anyone would call him, was a butch manly man. And it would be the last thing he wanted to be called, as well.

Finally, the dance instructor appeared in the waiting room to usher the children in - it appeared time for the lesson.

Kayce, not quite sure what to make of this boy, simply accepted his answer with a shrug and slid off her chair to the floor. He acted strangely compared to the boys she knew. Perhaps he was part girl? No, that wasn't possible. Nobody could be part boy and part girl, could they?

Thankfully, the instructor arrived in time to distract her from her currently disturbing train of thought. After straightening her dark skirt and checking to make sure both of her revoltingly pink ballet shoes were tied, she scooted after the instructor, trying at the same time to distance herself from the other girls. Ewwwww... pink!

((Ah...I know nothing of ballet. Nothing what-so-ever x.x))

The instructor led them into a room, where they would do exercises before beginning. As this was only the very first lesson, it was unlikely they would go very far.

Varian was bound to be disappointed. He had imagined it as walking in and instantly doing all those fantastic things he'd seen on television - but as for the exercises, well, he supposed it made sense to do those.

Whether the instructor thought it best to put the only two not wearing pink near each other, or it was fate, Kayce and Varian wound up right next to each other.

((--had like eleven years of ballet class-- Want me to take over as the instructor?))

Kayce, still maintaining a buffer of empty air between herself and the pink-clad girls, followed the crowd into the dance room. She perked up almost immediately. The wooden floor felt cool and smooth beneath the constricting little shoes, and the faegirl indulged in silent glee as one of the other girls slipped and almost fell. Humph. Graceless little....

Managing to contain her eagerness to be doing something besides following the instructor, she reluctantly allowed herself to be put into line for warm-up exercises. Much to her dismay, though, her neighbor was none other than the feminine boy she had met before. Splendid. Well, at least she could laugh at him if he looked funny. That thought cheered her as she attempted to pay attention to the instructor's voice.

((Yes, please XD))

Varian certainly didn't have any problems with the floor; he already was graceful, to an extent. At the very least he was cautious enough to not move so fast that he lost his footing.

Noting that he was stuck next to that other girl, he didn't mind so much. At least she wasn't acting like one of the silly little girls that were also in the room - even if he didn't particularly care for her. Turning his attention to the instructor, he kept a bit of attention on his 'neighbor' as well.

Wouldn't do for her to out-do him, after all.

"And now... we will move into first position!" the instructor said all too gleefully, showing them how to put their heels together with their toes pointed out, making a 'v' shape with their feet.

Yes, yes, exciting. Can't we do twirls or something? Kayce thought grumpily as she mimicked the instructor's foot and arm position, her arms and hands curving out to the sides.

Seeing that many of the pink-clad girls were less than successful in achieving the proper arm and foot positions, the instructor told them to hold this position and then bustled around from one student to the next, fixing arms, tilting up chins, straightening out backs, and such. Kayce tried very hard not to flinch as the instructor straightened out her shoulders and babbled on about keeping her fingers closed.

The instructor then moved on to Varian. She paused a moment as if to wonder why she had a boy (of all creatures!) in her dance class. Then she tried to straighten his arms. "Less bent, dearie. Just a little curve with no elbows sticking out."

Kayce barely managed to contain her snicker.

Hearing something - not quite a snicker, but certainly on its way there - Varian glanced sharply at her, a scowl present on his face. It wasn't like she had been any better.

Still, he did what the instructor requested. All the while planning to laugh at Kayce the next time the instructor came around.

And as the instructor had passed beyond them, he hissed something at her - his tone only describable as irritated.

"It's not like you did any better."

It looked like he'd taken that almost-laugh as a personal insult.

One of Kayce's pointed ears twitched at the comment, but she said nothing. The only sign of her irritation was a curling of her upper lip at the corner, the gesture an obvious precursor to a snarl.

The expression faded quickly, though, and her face resumed its customary blandness as she watched the instructor take her position at the front of the room. Now the woman was demonstrating second position, which involved the feet spread out, the toes pointed outward.

Kayce held back a sigh as she mimicked the instructor's movements, careful to keep her fingers together and her shoulders straight. She was also hard-pressed to not throw another laugh in the boy's direction as the instructor prattled on about proper arm position ("No elbows, dearies! No elbows!") and then proceeded to show them the next position.

"No, I didn't. But it is nice to see you taken down a peg," she replied in perfect mimicry of her adopted mother's favorite saying, a hint of a smile at the corner of her mouth.
