I'd like to point you to an excellent work of fiction, George R.R. Martins truly epic A Song of Ice and Fire. It is essentially a high fantasy world (e.g. dragons, magic, medieval setting) with a storyline that varies from political intrigue to large scale battle enviroments with very well thought-through characters and a pitch black shot of humor.

The background is very well constructed, we have seven major houses (kingdoms), each with their own banners, minor houses and histories, set against each other, a vague sense of impending doom (winter is coming for those of you who already know the books xd ) and very intricate and vivid descriptions of cast and landmarks.

I must warn you though, two things make A Song of Ice and Fire special compared to your regular fantasy novel. First, be careful, as soon as you've read into a few chapters the 'just one more page' feeling kicks in until you yawn and blink and wonder that it's 4am already. Again.

Second, Martin has a special way of treating his major characters, especially in the first two books. It will easily happen that the main character you've been reading with (and about) the last four chapters dies within two sentences. This takes a liitle getting used to but but once you're into it it creates a very tense and interesting atmosphere. And don't worry, the major dying is done in books one and two. Most people get more or less unharmed through to books three and four. Most of them.

If you're interested now I'd recommend you have a look at A Game of Thrones, the first book of the series. You have a nice read ahead of you, and make sure you have the second volume ready once you begin with the first one or the suspense will just kill you.

My sister, read them. When I'm good enough at English, I'll try them too.

There are currently four of them:

- A Game of Thrones
- A Clash of Kings
- A Storm of Swords
- A Feast for Crows

The next one, A Dance with Dragons, is being released in somewhere in February 2007.

Martin said in an interview that A Feast for Crows was originally one book but was split into two, that explains the 'special' endings. I can't wait for the next heart

In February next year? It didn't say anything about the release date on his website. Anyway, I love Daenerys, and I was so sad when it didn't mention her a lot in A Feast for Crows.

Really? I recall disliking her, and being very happy with the characters represented in A Feast for Crows.

But in general, they are very good books. I just dislike a lot of the characters. And I seem to be alone in liking Sansa as opposed to Arya, and Jaime, as opposed to... well, anyone else. I have weird taste.

I love this series! heart Tyrion is by far my favourite character; he is truly briliant and makes me laugh. I hope that the prophecy saying Bran will fly if he travels beyond the Wall means that he'll ride one of Dany's dragons! biggrin

ABSOLUTELY LOVE this series...unfortunately, it is 2009 and still no Dance of Dragons...

There are supposed to be 7 books altogether.

My Husband and I read them together and can't wait for these last 3 to come out.

I've started reading A Game of Thrones after seeing the first episode of the HBO series. One thing that attracted me to this book is the fact that Martin says his inspiration was The Wars of the Roses. I'm all for dressing up history in fantasy! I'm not very far in the book at the moment, but I do like it.

I can't believe fans are so up in arms over the delay of the new book. People need to chill!

I love this series, but I hate how he likes to set up scenes to make it look like a character died, just to have them pop up later. It was cool the first few times, but he does it two or three times every book confused
