I'm having a problem with my sewing machine... the tension is so messed up, it'll be too loose or too tight where the thread gets messed up on the bottom or top of the fabric, but when I think I get it working, the thread just comes out of the fabric. Everything seems to be threaded right, checked it so many times... can anyone help me?

How cheap of a thread are you using? Is it one of those 33 cents per reel deals? You could also take the small tension tool that comes with your sewing machine and tighten the tension. It also depends on what fabric are you using? How fast are you sewing? What sewing style are you using?

The thread was like close to 1.50 I believe... and I've loosen and tighten the tension, it will either get all the mess on the one side or nothing threads. Also it seems like the bobbin thread isn't being picked up and I tried everything to fix it or at least the tricks I know. I'm using just normal cotton fabric and I'm not going that fast... actually I've been testing my sewing speed to see if that helps anything. The sewing style I'm using? Don't really know what you mean by that... just sewing like the normal stitch oo;;

completly unthread then rethread the machine
try it with diffrent scraps of material and thread
make sure that your needle is not blunt
and clean the lint from the feed dog (little teethey things that move the fabric)
Oil the machine
other than that I am out of ideas
it might need a service

My mom and I are thinking of returning it to the story... did basically everything people told me to do to fix it *sighs* hopefully I'll find a better sewing machine soon.

I am going to bum off this old topic rather then start a new one. I have looked online and read my manual and I just can't figure this out. How do I thread the bottom thread the bobbin thing. My manual makes it sound like all I have to do is drop in in there with the thread going clockwise.. I also can't seem to get the top to loop around the bottom... Help gonk

I had the same problem with my machine, my sister looked at it and I'd missed one tiny little part in threading it so everything kept getting caught in the bottom and tangled up.

Are you having trouble getting the thread to come out of the bobbin case correctly? With mine you put the bobbin in and pull the thread down into the slit parts. You don't have to weave it through it just lines up after you pull it.

My sewing machine is screwed up as well! The bottom thread is real loose and the top is real tight and the material falls apart!

Yeah, sounds to me like it's the thread.

How new or old is the machine?

Maybe some of you can help me with my machine issues...

It's very new. It's a Singer and I only got it last summer. It worked fine up until maybe six months ago or so. The thing that pushes the fabric along (sorry for that... I can't remember what the stupid thing is called) just won't work anymore! I read the manual, I oiled the thing up, cleaned it out, and tried adjusting it and everything... still broken!

Any suggestions?

They're called feed dogs. what won't work for them? If they're not moving they might be snagged with thread or have lost something in the joints.

As for the OP, if the thread isn't holding in the fabric I think you threaded the bobbin incorrectly. Tension problems wouldn't be so much as to not make it catch, it would just be a loose or tight stitch, resulting in uneven stitches and puckering/etc.

Go to the store and see if they offer a class so you can learn how to thread the machine properly, as there are too many machines to list the threading procedures for.

If you feed dogs aren't moving, check to see if you accidentally dis-engaged the feed dogs. Read, read and re-read your owners manual. Some machines allow you to disengage your feed dogs to darn (mend) and free motion embroider/quilt.

If you pay close attention to your manual you will also see the direction that the thread is supposed to be pulling off the bobbin ... make note of the direction when you are loading your bobbin into the bobbin case... this is critical in the stitch formation of your machine.

Also, needle size and thread size does make a difference in stitch quality and formation. Always try to use correct size & type of needle for your project. ie: Stretch needles for stretch fabrics, denim for sewing denim, duck, heavy twill. Sharps for piecing and stitching quilt fabric. etc.

Now, if you are having stitch formation problems and you have made sure your machine is properly threaded, and your bobbin is properly loaded as per your manual instructions. Try cleaning your machine. That means get our your lint brush that came with your machine (I also use q-tips for tiny spots my brush won't fit into) remove the needle plate and clean the bobbin area, look for any tangled or loose threads. Follow cleaning instructions in your manual if there are any. Use a flash light to see if there are any threads in your tension disk area in the upper threading.
The smallest thread will mess up your tension & stitch formation.

Also if there is any dirt on your machine, use isopropryl alcohol to clean the machine. I have friends who have spilled hot chocolate and friends who smoke and the tar, cat hair, etc actually builds up on the components of the machine and mess it up. Rubbing alcohol used sparingly will clean the machine and remove any crud without making it rust. Of course you do have to oil the machine after about every 6 hours of sewing time. I change my needles every six hours as well.

Good luck
