Newbie Guide
Or: What the hell do I do?

If you're completely and utterly lost you should go back and read the rules. Not only do they give a few tips on forum roleplaying, but they also hold the secret to the background.

Anyway, on with your walkthrough.

The first thing you need is a character. This is often the hardest part, or sometimes the easiest. So, what are you limited to? Well, in the least cheesy way possible: your imagination. Yes, if you can think it and justify it with a bio then you can play it. Isn't that great? I thought so. So everything from the badass gunman to the talking squid can be played. Though there's one important qualifier: it needs to make sense and conform to the good roleplaying. Let's get this list started:

1) Balance is key. There should be weaknesses to go with strengths, and nobody is good at everything.
2) Keep in mind that holdine is at a general tech level of a steampunked 1900-1940. What this means: You can have magic, swords, guns or whatever. But there's gonna me wicked awesome industrial machines next to the horses and carriages.
3) Most importantly be original. We've all seen the Cloud and Naruto rip offs, and we don't need to see another. Just think of something cool and go with it, even if it's just putting a spin on the swordsman archetype.

Where to start and how to get around is the next big question. The beauty is in those wonderful tags you see exactly where something is. Lets take Holdine City for example. Lets say your character hangs around less scrupulous areas, thus you wouldn't want them accidentally hobnobbing with the upper crust of the city.

Thankfully Holdine city isn't just one big thread. Every thread is set up in the [Location] Sub-location set-up. Thus you know the [Holdine City] Industrial District thread will be a much better fit than the [Holdine City] Noble's Row thread.

Now, how the hell do you go place to place? Another easy one to answer. Every thread should be linked, either by physical links (IE Central district has a link to business district) or by common sense (The outside of the holdine mansion is not the inside). For lager distances common sense is once again used. Obviously you won't be able to get to an island unless you either have a flying or floating device (or are an awesome swimmer).

Shit! There are people! How the hell do I interact with them!? A daunting task indeed, but one that can be answered by: you write some s**t, moron. In forum based roleplaying it's generally you post something and then one or two people post something in reply. No need to be chained to your computer, and no reason to be stressed about being a slow typer.

In some cases (read: fights) post order is enforced. This basically means that you have to post in a certain order to maintain the fairness of the engagement. For example, the fight between A, B, and C would have the order A, B, then C posts. Mainly because if A posted, then B posted, then A posted again, and then C, basically gives A an unfair amount of actions compared to B and C.

Sometimes there's a team post order. For example let's say the order is Team A, then Team B. All the members of team A could post, and then all the members of team B could post. This allows for wicked awesome combo moves.

Once again, if you need any more information PM Joseph Brown.

Making a new Location
Or: How to live in a player created world.

So, you've played in the already created threads and think it's time to make your mark on this world. That's awesome, the world only gets bigger the more people play with it. Of course if I just let everyone make threads willy nilly then I would have a quickly growing mess. So, listen up and listen good.

First you have to have a basic understanding of the tag system mentioned in the newbie guide. For connivence sake I'll remind you right.... NOW... [Location] Sub-location. So that basically means the big location like cities or castles go in the brackets, and the smaller subsections like districts or rooms go outside.

Next, keep in mind how relevant the location is. If the location is so specific that it could only be used for one plot ever, you're probably better off creating a more general thread. For example, instead of making, [Holdine City] Factory that will blow up after one use, just use the thread for the industrial district.

In the same vein keep in mind how many threads are needed for a location. Sometimes the sub threads get so little use that they might as well only be one. For example, Holdine City needs different threads for its districts, but your two bedroom townhouse does not.

New Sub-Locations, Old Locations

This is an easy one really, since all you have to do is keep in mind the rules above. Just take an existing location, say [Holdine City and make a new sub-location. This is good for places like apartments, homes, bars, stores, and all those good things. If you're extra awesome you can like to what other sub-locations your thread links to. Example: [Holdine City] Awesome-mart links to [Holdine City] Business District.

New places all together

Say you want to make your character home village, or a castle your warlord holes himself up in. If that's the case then you're going to want to make a new location all together. Most of the time these will consist of one or two sub locations depending on the scope of the location. Once again keep in mind that your castle does not need a thread for all 108 bedrooms.

If you're making a new political entity this comes with some more responsibility. Pretty much you should make a Book of Travels post on your new country/city state/barbarian tribe so other players can know what's common knowledge about them. If you want to take it one step further you can make a really detailed BoT post so players can create characters and make threads in your new entity.

Special Threads

The most common special thread is the moving thread. For example, a ship or a caravan. In this case instead of [Location] sub-location you go with [Name of Moving Thing] Where it is now. Example: if you had a crawler ship called the Invincible and it was docked at Holdine you would make [The Invincible] Docked at Holdine City.
