Mary Shelley, Frankenstein Aldous Huxley, Brave New World H.G. Wells, The Time Machine Alexandre Dumas, The Count of Monte Cristo Robert Heinlein, Starship Troopers
Wow I'm conventional. I'd also recommend anything from any of the last three authors. Mary Shelley sort of goes downhill after Frankenstein, but I recommend Frankenstein near, if not at, the top of the list.

I highly recommend any of C.S. Lewis' stuff. He and Tolkien were best friends, so their writing is similar.
He wrote the Chronicals of Narnia. Recommended books of the series: The Horse and His Boy, Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and The Last Battle.
