We had a Yom Hashoah service yesterday in religious school and read the story of Irena Sendler. She rescued 2,500 children from the Warsaw ghetto, but her story only recently came to light. It was to remind us to remember not only all the evil people, but the other people who risked their lives because they knew it was the right thing to do. Without them, the Holocaust would have been much worse.

But in regular school... nothing. Though it was mentained on the radio this morning, which surprised me. Usually most people here aren't even aware of Hanukkah. (I live in the USA, in a suburb that is not remotely diverse in any way.)

I was actgually quite suprised. I came into school this morning,
And they made a special announcement over the loud speaker and we had a moment of silence for both the Holocaust and Armenian Genocide.

After that, All first period teachers had recieved an evelope filled with colored paper clips. The teachers handed them out and the students wore them on shirts and pants etc.

The Hillel at my college does a 24 hour reading of the names of the people who died (those they know, at least), and, each year they pick up from where they left off the year before. I read the names for a bit... people volunteered to take turns.

My classmates and I visited Poland last summer, and we read some pieces and poems, and sang some songs, and, well, all that routine. Quite surprisingly, this memorial day was the easiest one I've ever gone through.
