Cirrus pulled the thermometer out of her brother's mouth and frowned. "Don't you dare get out of this bed," she said threateningly as he started to sit up. "Ms. Montecelli will just have to understand that you're too sick to go to practice this morning." She turned the thermometer off and pulled his covers up around his chin.

"What the hell were you thinking? Jogging around late at night in the pouring rain? You better hope this doesn't turn into pneumonia," she admonished lightly, her worry taking the sting out of her words. She sat down on the edge of his bed and put a cool hand on his forehead.

"I have to go to the library today. I've got a huge lit project due at the end of this week. I don't want you out of this bed unless you're taking yourself to the hospital wing. Got it?" she said sternly.

Kayne sighed and rolled his eyes at his sister. "Yeah. I've got it. I'll stay in bed. I promise," he said with a rasp deep in his chest. He watched her get up and leave and waited patiently until he heard the front door close. Slowly he sat up and grabbed his pillow and comforter and made his way into the living room. If she was going to force him to stay in all day, at least he was going to be where he could watch some TV. Stretching out comfortably on the couch he channel surfed through the random shows he couldn't understand and eventually dozed off.

When Kayne didn't turn up for practice Jess decided that she should go and find out where he had got to. It wasn't like him to miss a practice. Locking up the dojo again she hoped he hadn't gotten too sick. He didn't look particularly good the day before.
Bet he got sick on purpose. She thought to herself as she crossed to the small shop on campus. Not that she was feeling particularly good either. Her throat was scratchy and her chest felt tight. Her morning run along the river had felt like a twelve mile hike.

Grabbing some supplies she made her way over to the dorms and gave a heavy knock in case he was asleep.

The knock on the door jarred Kayne out of his light sleep. Stretching groggily, he pulled himself up and stumbled over to the door. Not particularly interested in visitors, he opened it with a bit of a scowl.

"What?" he demanded, then lifted his glazed eyes up to see Sensei standing in front of him. Smirking, he shifted to lean against the doorframe. Quickly covering his mouth he coughed heavily for a moment. Oh how he wanted to let her have it for getting him needlessly sick, but he ached too much at the moment to start in on her.

"Sorry Sensei. Cirrie wouldn't let me out of bed this morning. Apparently it's not a good idea to practice when you've got a fever or something," he said, his voice cracking a bit.

Jess raised an eyebrow at the zombie like being that opened the door. Watching him cough she shook her head and gave him a glare.
"Enough with the dramatics Shaidey." She said grabbing his arm and steering him back to the couch. "You win, I feel bad. Now get warm and I'll make you some of my grandmother's cure all soup and tea. There is no way you are milking this for any longer than is needed."

She gave him her best do it or else look and went to dump the bag of stuff she had brought in the kitchen.

"Dramatics?" Kayne repeated as he allowed her to lead him back to the couch. Gratefully, he sat back down and curled up in a ball, wrapping his blanket around himself. Coughing a bit more, he cleared his throat. "Hardly Sensei." He hated being sick. He listened to her move around in the kitchen for a bit and could feel himself starting to doze again. He hadn't slept well since the cough had settled down in his chest a couple of days after her drunken performance.

"Just remember... You promised," he called out hoarsely to her, fighting to stay awake.

"Yeah, Yeah." Jess muttered getting to work in the kitchen, chopping vegetables and throwing them all into the largest saucepan she could find. "Because I wasn't being punished enough through sheer embarassment." Shaking her head she filled the saucepan with stock, seasoning and set it to boil.

Setting the kettle on she made some Cammomile and honey tea.
"Have you taken anything for it?" She called pouring the tea into two cups. The way her throat was feeling she was in need of some of it too. "What's your temperature?" She asked, concerned as she handed him a cup of the tea and took a seat on the couch avoiding his feet.

Listening to her work in the kitchen, Kayne dozed off again, but woke easily when she called out to him. Opening his eyes he cleared his throat again.

"Yeah. Cirrus gave me a whole mess of medicine. Motrin, something for my cough, and something to help me sleep," he answered. When she appeared in front of him, he shifted a bit to sit up and took the mug in both of his hands. Oh how he hated being sick, he thought, glowering a bit. "I think Cirrie said 102.6. She says if it doesn't go down by the time she gets back she's going to force me to go to the hospital wing," he said with a grimace. He coughed again into his arm and took a sip of the warm tea and enjoyed the way it felt sliding down his sore throat.

"How are you feeling?" he asked, turning his red eyes over to her. She didn't look anywhere near as bad as he did, but she still didn't look like her bright and chipper self.

Jess looked at him almost mortified when he told her his temperature. That was before she realised he was talking Farenheit.
"Ahh, yeah. Don't worry. We'll get your temperature down by the time she gets back." She said blowing on her tea.

Placing the tea down on the table she dug into the bag next to her and brought out a rectangular box. On the front there was a cartoon picture of a person with a fever.
"You see Japan is the land of work and the land of influenza obsession. They have loads of cunning devices to get people through fevers."

She tore off the top of the packet and took out what looked like a thick plaster.
"Me? I've felt better. My throat is pretty painful and my chest is tight." She said taking off the plastic backing and leaning over him. "So I can't train properly, which is driving me crazy." She stuck the cooling gel thingy on his head smoothed it down and sat back against the arm again.
"So I am your slave till four when I have to go and supervise archery. What d'you want me to do? You can include shut up and go away in those orders if you want." She shrugged picking her tea up again. "I know you'd probably rather sleep than have me bothering you all day."

"I hope so Sensei. I hate hospitals," he said with a bit of a shudder. He watched her with interest as she got the cooling compress ready and smiled as she leaned over him. The combination of the coolness and the pressure from her hands felt so good on his hot, achy head that he closed his eyes with a rather goofy grin on his face. At her words, he opened his eyes and thought about it for a minute, a sly smile spreading across his lips. She honestly thought that she would get off from taking care of him that easily. So what if she was right, he wasn't going to let her make her escape that quickly. Supressing another cough, Kayne leaned over and placed the tea down on the table. He then turned around and laid back with his head down in her lap.

"Could you press down on my head again? That felt really good," he croaked, snuggling a bit up against her.

"Heh, I hate em too." She agreed sipping the tea and letting it sooth her scratchy throat. She really hoped the fever went down. This really was all her fault. If he ended up in hospital she'd never forgive herself.

Jess gave him a wry glare as he decided to move and lay his head in her lap. "Men." She smirked. "You're all the same. Completely helpless when sick. It's rather pathetic really." She said placing her hand over his boiling head and pressing gently on the compress and relaxing back against the cushions.

"So what have you been watching on TV, I bet there's a couple of good drama's on this time of day. Got the remote?"

Kayne cracked an eye open and glared at her. "Women. You're all the same. Set here on God's green earth to drive us men insane. Or try to kill us by drunkenly drag us through the pouring rain for no reason. Which ever comes first," he shrugged with a smug look on his face. Reaching down between the cushions he produced the remote and handed it up to her.

"I haven't the foggiest. It's all gibberish on a normal day. Today it's just noise. Maybe you could translate for me?" he questioned, peering up at her, before turning slightly to look at the TV. He coughed again at the turn, but quickly made himself stop. "That soup smells really good," he said, curling up into a tight ball up against her. Her lap was comfortable and nursing refreshing. Cirrus had a tendancy to hover and irritate him with her worry. Jess still treated him the way she always did, but it made him happy that she cared enough to drop by and take care of him. If he were honest with himself, he'd admit he wasn't really looking forward to a day spent alone.

Jess gave a snort of laughter at his comment about women and began to flick through the channels.
"Well we do try. If that's the case I think I get big points from our creator for making you sick. Maybe I'll get a sainthood." She smirked and settled on a typical hospital drama. "And you didn't have to come with me."

Taking a quick glance at her watch she shrugged. "It'll be ready in a bit." Absently she played with his hair as she turned her attention back to the TV. It made her feel at home rather than stuck in the wierdass school of doom.
"O.k. So to the drama." She said watching the TV. "The woman on the screen now is a new nurse, she's totally in love with the doctor. But he's a tosser and is having an affair with the female surgeon. Then this guy." She said pointing to a guy with glasses. "He's an orderly and is totally in love with the nurse, but she doesn't know anything about it. She's far too busy chasing after the idiot doctor to see what a great guy he is."

"Sure... Saint Sensei, keeper of those who kick your a**," Kayne laughed lightly. "And I only went with you because I knew you were probably going to end up falling down four flights of stairs, and you weren't about to get out of teaching me martial arts that easily." Another coughing fit took him for a moment, but eventually stopped. As she started to play with his hair Kayne relaxed and closed his eyes. He listened to her talk silly nonsense about the drama on TV and eventually dozed off with a small content smile on his lips.

Once Kayne had drifted off Jess tried to watch the drama. The truth was it was dull as s**t and totally typical. There was squeeky nurse girl bouncing around like a three year old on crack. She smirked. It was amusing what some guys found attractive.

Leaning back further into the cushions Jess rested her head against the back of the sofa and closed her eyes. She was exhausted from trying to stick to her usual routine whilst sick and felt so warm and cozy. She had only meant to doze off for a moment.

~~

Jess was woken half an hour later by a strange smell. It was a bit like burning. Wrinkling her nose she wondered what it could be when the word soup popped into her head.
"Feck." She cried, lifting Kayne's head off her lap and standing. Placing him gently on the cushion she ran into the kitchen and opened a window. The soup had managed to simmer down to almost nothing burning the vegetables and causing the horrible smell. "s**t, s**t, s**t, s**t." She said grabbing a tea towel and trying to fan the smoke out the window as she turned the burner off.

Kayne was jolted out of sleep when Jess suddenly lifted his head off of her warm and comfy lap. He looked up at her as she set his head gently back down on the sofa, the smell of something burning vaguely coming to him. Groggily he sat up and looked over the back of the couch to the kitchen.

"Oi! You really are trying to kill me aren't you Sensei? What did I ever do to deserve death by cold, poison, and being burned alive?" he joked, clearing the fuzz from his throat. Slowly he pulled himself up to his feet and made his way into the kitchen. "Well... it did smell good," he grinned, peering into the pot.
