The race was begining to decline in his favor as his speed faultered. He was strong but never had he run this far. Quiet whispers of the wind carried the crashing solaces of the ocean while its sharp scent seemed to penetrate his nose.
That smell! Damu nearly cringed as the strange scent wafted heavily within the air, becoming thicker and thicker as he trekked closer to the oceans bay. Hopefully such a scent would dull and become unnoticiable.
He couldn't really tolerate the scent and nor could his stomach. But who knows..maybe it wouldn't be so bad, it just would take time.
Only a few lengths away, the white and black swirled wolf began to slow his pace as the once forested surroundings became sparse and the once familiar scents lingering faintly. Underneath, the cool ground that was littered with leaves and coarse grass had transformed into a gritty abyss. Each step seemed to engulf his paw within its depths as movement became somewhat tumultious. If that wasn't bad, the sands were hot and only made walking through a bit of a trial itself.
Griting his teeth as he stumbled over his feet, sprawling head over tail into the unpleasant sands, he grumbled. "Wha- is this it?" Staggering to his feet as he arose and shook his fur free of the sand and itchy sensations, Damu pawed at his face. This was not fun! Not fun at all! Not to mention it was sticky and clung to everything!
"Taima..." he called out as he padded along the shoreline of the beach in a rather blind fashion. Stupid sand.."Where are you?"

((We'll say they entered near the land between Phib and Hige's lands, xD which-- *points to the map* is the far West side of Hige's and Loki's land, then.))
"Well now, this don't happen everyday." Hige muttered softly under his breath.
The wolves of the Southern Seaside pack were all well accustomed to the harsh scent of the sea's salt water, particularly Hige, whose nose had been extremely sensitive to start with. You spend one week near the sea and you'd probably never smell things the same way again, it strengthened your senses after a while.
Yet, there were foreign scents on the sea breeze today. The alphas were making a "patrol" round (also known as taking a private stroll together around the packlands.) of the less frequented borders. Thayne often looked after the Northern half as it was closer to his den, while the alphas took the river at the foot of the mountains, the sea (not that anyone would ever manage to get to them from there), and halfway North along the Western grasslands. The same grasslands that Tatti once learned to hunt rabbits in...
They hadn't changed in the months since the wolves arrived, only in color. They were currently a lush shade of green as the massive mountain wolf parted a path through their tall blades. Loki wasn't far off, Hige had only just strayed from her side to investigate.
Cresting one of the sand dunes with practiced ease, Hige's golden eyes scanned the area. He spotted a splotch of white and black in the distance on the beach that lay halfway between theirs and the Outrider's land.
He'd send out a greeting once Loki was aware of the situation, and if the male didn't notice them first.

The femme had been semi-awkwardly making her way through the sand, having been gone for so long she had just about forgotten how to walk in the stuff. The scents she was still accustomed to, and glad for the fact. Keeping up with Hige, she often took great breaths of the air around her, fresh air weighed with salt and other smells from the different surroundings. She had almost forgotten how beautiful it was here.
"Another wolf is near" she stated, almost a question. The scent was not familiar to her, but her and Hige could handle any foe and in the same respect greet any potential friend. She smiled and gave Hige's muzzle a lick as they continued towards the grasslands. Ever since they had first arrived here, she had admired the grasses, swaying lazily in the breeze.
She watched as Hige continued forward, investigating something she couldn't see. Catching up she too noticed the other wolf in the distance. Nodding to Hige she waited as he howled a greeting to the newcomer before giving a short howl of her own, to compliment his.

Taima ran beside her mate practically the whole way, occassionally one or the other getting a foot or so ahead of the other, but they eventually evened themselves out again. They had been running for what seemed like forever now, going in this fashion mostly the whole way; it had only been the beginning part where there had been a noticable difference in their distances.
Yet as they soon reached the ocean, she eventually slowed and came to a stop beside Damu. He seemed quite unaccustomed to the feel of the strange substance and was having a bit of difficulty. She couldn't blame him, however, because the sand felt rather awkward under her own paws, and especially under the one with the missing pads. So in an attempt to make that paw feel better, she lifted it up off the ground and didn't stand on it, almost as if it was injured.
Giggling slightly to herself, the female jumped forward slightly and let her ears perk forwards. "I'm right here, Damu!" she called, pressing herself against him. Had the sand blinded him in some way?
Worried a little, she hopped about him and began to lick away at his face. But then suddenly a sharp scent stung at her nose. At first she had thought it to be the salt from the close waters, but it had a strange familiarity to it.. and she wasn't at all used to the smell of salt. In the next instant it struck her. That was the smell of wolf!! Unmistakably so, Tai soon began to tuck her tail between her legs and fold her ears back against her skull.
"Damu," she whispered slightly, hoping the others hadn't quite spotted them yet. But then a howl rose up into the air, startling and frightening the female out of her wits. "Others!!" she cried, then, without hesitation, she hid behind and slightly under her mate, her tail quivering with fear.
Strangers had never really been kind to her.. except for Damu. Would these be like the hostile others, or like her loving and adoring mate?

Hige felt confidence anew as Loki joined him in greeting the foreigners. Despite her long absence it seemed almost as though she'd never left. It felt good to be facing strangers with her presence at his side again-- it just didn't seem natural any other way.
Damu's howl was met with curious ears, and Hige glanced out over the sandy hills to notice the second shadow lingering behind the other. It was like looking back into a mirror of the past... that had once been he and Loki, that familar posture of the female, the protective stance of the male--
"Looks like a couple of lovebirds." Hige muttered with a hint of amusement, glancing to Loki. The situation was probably going to be tense, as they both knew well how fierce a protective male could be. Hige had the scars to proove it. His cold nose nudged against Loki's neck. "Think they're just passing through?"
Even as he asked this Hige turned forward again and began at a casual pace towards the two, tail raising to flag high, head lifting a bit as well to clarify rank. He never felt right lifting his head TOO upright, though, augh, he felt like some kind of turkey walking around like THAT.

Howls tapering off together she took another look back across the land at the newcomers. She too, was glad to be here to help greet them, she loved meeting new wolves, and meeting them with Hige by her side made it so much more fun.
She waited with the sandy male as the other wolf answered with a howl of his own, and also noticed the second wolf. "Lovebirds, yes." a warm smile crept over her face, realizing the two must look just like she and Hige did when they first met. "I don't know, it should." she smiled and spoke softly, nuzzling the big male, returning his noseing. "Oh, I hope this goes well."
As Hige made his way forward, she went after him, tail and head raised in the same manner. Commanding respect, but at the same time the small femme made herself seem less threatening all the same. It will be fine she told herself.

Uncertainty swept straight through the female as the suspense seeemed to well up like a great wave. Pretty soon it would come crashing down, she thought, and would probably overturn them in the process. But she didn't want that to happen. Damu was using himself as a barrier between her and the others, but where as she normally would have accepted the protection, now she felt like it was slightly wrong.
She felt like taking a stand beside them, staying at his side no matter what the danger or cost. But then, what could she do if the first howlers chose to attack? She was useless in a fight, that she knew all too well. And her fear often clouded her vision and blacked out any and all logical thoughts.
Resigning to her uselessness, Tai stay crouched behind her mate. Keen eyes caught the movement in the bushes ahead, and she now knew that whoever was out there, they were about to show themselves now.
"They are coming," she whispered slightly, her ears falling backward even father against her skull. She was frightened, that was for sure. Frightened for herself, but most of all for her mate. If there was an attack, he would be the first they'd go for, as he was the closest to them. Oh how horrible she felt!
The female just wished it would all be over and done with...

Black ears fell back slightly as the two wolves appeared within sight. It was a male and female and, by the look of their posture, he could only assume that they were dealing with an Alpah pair.
That's not quite what he had in mind...Damu didn't exactly want to confront with enraged Alphas yet, at the same time, he didn't want to feel inferior with no respect towards him.
He was a drifter, a wandering soul alongside his mate, and neither of them had yet to stumble across a place where they could fit in or belong. Would they always fall stray? Hopefully not, he thought as he bit his lower lip and swayed his tail downwards in a lower position to show his respect as well as his protection towards his mate.
The white and black swirled wolfs mind was rampant with unceasing thoughts of bloodshed and utter chaos. Like his mate, he didn't know what to expect and he silently pleaded that the two mates were not out for blood. All he could do was wait...
Standing stiff as his body was ridged and tant, muscles tense and prepared to react if a first attack upon him or his mate was unleashed, Damu stood there as his emerald eyes focused upon the proceeding pair.
"Whatever happens...I will defend you," he whispered deafly as he turned around towards her and tenderly nuzzled her, gracing her nose with a delicate kiss.
He wouldn't speak- no, he couldn't speak. Damu would speak when they had uttered the first words wheter they would be dripping with malice or soothing to his troubled soul.
Facing back towards them, he sat waiting silently with his mate behind him and for the scene to be set; the two pairs meeting face to face.

"It will." Hige reassured with a childish grin, all the playfulness from their first days together fully restored. "You've got me here don't ya?"
But, now it was time for the games to stop for now at least. They were nearly upon the two wolves, who were looking no more relaxed than before, though a hair less aggressive.
As the leaders of the Seaside pack made their approach it was with a friendly and welcoming flag of Hige's tail. He didn't want to provoke these strangers anymore than they did them. He also had someone that he cared not to see injured or worse should a fight break out. It was actually Damu's gesture towards Taima that reassured Hige that they really were just a couple passing through.
"Welcome to the Seaside packlands...." He glanced to Loki, then back in Damu and Taima's direction. "Well... sort of, at least." They WERE just outside of the borders, the very outskirts of the beach and grassland. If they'd continued west they would have found that the sands just continued on, growing more rocky until they'd crossed into Phib's land. They hadn't, however, though they were just as welcomed as visitors either way they had gone.
"I'm Hige, and this is my mate and our alpha female, Loki. What brings you two by? Not a lot of wolves are all that eager to head towards such a smell."
Now, as Hige said this it was with a tone of mirth, and he fell silent both to let Loki speak if she had any words of welcome, questions, or reassurances she wanted to give-- as well as giving their guests a chance to respond.

"Of course" she added with her own playful grin. It was true, there wasn't much Hige couldn't overcome, and even less would stand up to them successfully when they were together.
After giving Hige's ear a quick n** the she wolf sobered up moving back to an assertive body language, and yet still managed to exude an air of calm tranquility. The logic in her own mind stated that this couple would not move to hurt them unless provoked, the actions between them strengthened her beliefs.
Hige spoke as they finally reached the two newcomers. It was normally in Loki's nature to sit through greetings, but this time she would remain standing. Letting a slight smile cover her maw, she listened intently to Hige address their company, waiting for him to finish before offering her own greetings.
"Yes, welcome." with a slight bow and nod, before straightening again to hear their answer to her mate's question.

Taima remained silent all throughout the greetings, as was polite. Yet even as Hige asked them what they were doing in such an odd place with such a stinging smell, she continued to hold her tongue. This brown wolf in front of them, with the strange thing around his neck--she couldn't tell if it was really a collar or simply part of his neck fur with her nervousness--was rather large, perhaps a bit too large for her tastes. He seemed to loom over the other three, and he frightened her the most.
So these were actual alphas, she randomly thought to herself in an attempt to perhaps give her mind something else to think of other than her fear. They seemed proud enough, yet at the same time warming and welcoming. Much different than the ones she was used to encountering. Yet that did nothing to chase away her fear.
And so she remained, nearly glued to the spot, behind her mate. Tail stayed tucked and ears remained flat against her head. Until Damu had spoken and perhaps given his word of approval, Tai would remain silent and submissive.

Emerald eyes fell upon the rather bulky male that stood in front of him, settled upon him casually while the uncertainty still haunted the back of his mind. The first spoken words were civil; no brutish threats nor malicious tone that dripped from his fangs and, slowly, comfort seemed to reassure the white and black swirled male.
A relaxed, small smile drew upon his maw as he dipped his head low in what respect he could offer up. He didn't want to seem barbaric as he upheld their assertive rank knowing that, in most cases, it was wolves who were onlooked as true bred leaders and whose insight was reveered that led many of his worries to be soothed.
He couldn't intimidate them...nor would he let such a judgement against him spark the begining to a senseless brawl of pride and a quench to seduce his hidden pains.
"I'm Damu, and this," he inclined with a small sway of his head towards the moss and black hued female behind him, "is my mate, Taima. We're just passing through...I promised that I would go with her to see the ocean."
"We're drifters and have no intentions to stir up any trouble," he added as he took several steps towards the side and paralleled himself against his mate.
He never did like to see her so submissve and afraid and it only ached at his heart to leave her behind him. Pressing up against her, he rumbled softly and nuzzled into her with upmost delicate and tender gestures. Wuffing low and trying to reassure her that all would be well and that she was not alone, he nibbled on her ear.
For the rest of Hige's questions, the jagged-furred male of white and black furrowed his brows slightly and glimpsed towards the Alpha. How to explain what they were searching for? Why were they out here?
To find a new destiny.
"We're just looking for someplace we can belong," he replied as his eyes softened and drew towards the ground. "Just a place to call home."
One might of deemed him a ruthless brute, sinful and a bloodthirsty savage at first glance but, truthfully, the large statured wolf was one of two identities; a beast and a lover.
Behind the emerald orbs and baring fangs, Damu was caring, compassionate and a devoted mate who was not afraid to sacrifice his very life if needed in the protection of his mate, Taima. He was lovesick but had found a lifetime companion who he could serve faithfully.

Loki nodded at her mate's words, letting her tail swish softly behind her. It didn't sound to her like the pair before them had any set idea where they were going just yet. Simply wandering. She had been like this once, only she went alone. It wasn't too long before she, too, had found a home.
She mused for a bit, blue eyes sparkling, taking in the different pelts of the wolves in front of her.
"Mmhm. Damu, Taima," nodding at both as she spoke their names "if you would like, you would be most welcome to stay on our lands, join our pack." soft-spoken, she gave a sideways glance and grin to Hige, knowing full well it was on his mind too.
