Okay! So I got an email the other day inviting me to a church of Scientology in Boulder. I'm tempted to go and chat with them. Just to find some things out about this rather fascinating and creative religion. But, since its such a hot topic now-a-days, I was wondering if anyone here had any particular questions that they'd like me to ask said Scientologists and then I can come back and report my findings.

Questions? Anybody?

Hmmm....how about..What are they smoking? Because I don't want some!

It must be essance of idiocy or greed.

Actually I'd be interesting in knowing they use to back up thier beliefs, because scientology looks to me like a a load of crock.

I vote poll option 1... sweatdrop

I read about them in Wikipedia, but don't know much else. Rather closed-mindedly, I dismissed them as a load of nutters.

Wikipedia says that they discourage breastfeeding in infants.

Wikipedia
Also, Hubbard wrote that breastfeeding should be avoided. As an alternative, Hubbard offered a potentially unsafe concoction, which he called the "Barley Formula"

This, in my opinion, is completely wrong, as there are scientific conclusions proving that breast milk is the best start for babies in life. It's the natural thing to do.

Could you ask them about whether they follow that idea, and if so, why?

Thanks

I think scientology just shows how easy it was for the writers of the old bibles to get their works of fiction to be recognized as religious doctrines.

Heh heh. Word, Dathu. razz

Okay. So I'm going to ask so far... What their beliefs are founded on and why they don't agree with breast feeding? Correct? I'll write all these down on a piece of paper and report my findings after my meeting.

Alright. I need more questions guys. domokun I like asking questions.

Anyone can write a book, telling people they will all go to 'hell' or be frowned upon by a higher being, and people will be scared into believing it. Like I already said, I don't really know Scientology in-depth, but it seems that just because a guy wrote a book now thousands of people are suddenly members of this new 'religion'.

Doesn't it show that if anyone wants to, they can scare people into believing anything? Stands to reason that the bible was written by someone just like this, with little or no physical evidence behind their ideas, and yet nowadays millions of people follow organised religion.

Its an association game. When human beings became stationary and started living in bigger and bigger groups, they started having the need to be able to associate with each other. Well, what better way than to associate through belief. *shrugs* Thats a hypothesis I have anyways.

Here's a good one! Ask them why they run a corporation called the "Religious Technology Center" that takes money in increasing increments (eventually in the millions) to give you the secrets to reach higher levels of enlightenment.

Oh, and tell them that the name "Jesus" sounds way cooler than "L. Ron Hubbard". 3nodding

I went. I went on Saturday. And the guy was terrible at answering questions. Like, I think he could tell I had no intention whatsoever of taking them seriously and so didn't want to really answer any of my questions about their core beliefs and "fuel any rumors". But umm... Basically, he said that scientology is like Buddhism in the sense that they don't necessarily believe in a god. You can believe in a god, but the set up of the "religion" isn't based around one. He said its "a religious philosophy. Not a practice."

I asked him about if they go to like church or anything and he said they go to "seminars" that help you with things in your life. When he was explaining my personality test to me, he kept trying to push a seminar and book about study habits on me. Actually, I almost did it except I only had like three dollars to my name. *is a terrible studier*

And then, I asked about Space Captain Xenu and the blowing up of the hundreds of human slaves or whatever and he totally didn't answer me. Instead he went on a tangent about how "60-70% of the population believes in there life being out there in the universe". Yeah... I had the feeling he didn't want to talk about that particular subject anymore considering he was twiddling his thumbs and looking around and said "What else?" really quickly after he'd finished his "explanation". Heh.

I also asked if they had something like a Bible and he said that the writtings of L. Ron Hubbard could be considered their "scriptures".

I asked about the whole breast milk being considered bad for the babies and them having a "special formula" and he just shook his head and said that no, thats not true. At that particular sector, there were a few lactating mothers and the babies were raised on the mothers milk, etc. etc.

Umm... and then I asked if they believed in a giant chicken egg in the center of the universe (cause my dad said he'd heard they'd believed it) and the guy like stared at me as if I were the stupidest thing ever. And then he shook his head and kinda chuckled and said "No. I've never even heard that one before." So... No giant chicken egg in the center of the universe.

Uh... and then I asked about the paying money to go further up the ranks and he said they're called "donations" and that every where has the same thing. Like in the catholic church they pay money to get into certain areas of the church and stuff. He didn't seem too keen on that particular subject either. Heh.

He kept bringing up about how people always bash things that are new and they don't understand. And about how most of what I'd heard was rumors and blah blah blah.

I knew I should've written down all the questions that came to my mind when I had them... but I hadn't. ToT So thats about all that I asked. Pppf... Ummm... Er... sweatdrop

Thanks! Meh, wikipedia obviously isn't so reliable after all. Either that, or perhaps it differs in different areas.
