This springs from a discusion between me and Mizeral here http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12430135&page=72So the question is, does anybody actually prefer gaming on with a keyboard over a gaming with a controller? I sure don't. A keyboard is great for typing, but it is an inferior tool for gaming. A controller is specifically designed for gaming. Not enough buttons you say? If you include the anolog directions, a dual shock controller has 24 buttons. If that's not enough, you can do what they do for spells in KH, where holding a button changes the function of circle, triangle, square, and X. That gives you 3 more buttons to work with. Most control schemes I see for a keyboard seem to work quite well on a controller. A controller is more comfortable, and gives a great advantage for games requiring any action.

It depends what the game was designed for. Fighting games are a b***h to play on the PC. But some games like some MMOs are meant for the PC.

True, but if you have a usb adaptor for your controller, you can set up a control scheme for your PC MMO on it. There are advantages to having all the buttons within easy reach.

I hate playing console fps. the analog stick setup feels so much more clunky than the keyboard/mouse setup, to me. anything else I'll agree on the controller being the better choice, but for fps I need my keyboard.
I also use my keyboard to play pso, but I've been meaning to swipe a 360 controller from the roommate to try that out. although, I'd be kind of lost without all my keyboard shortcuts.

I'm not much of an FPS person. I do enjoy Timesplitters, and the occasional game of Ghost Recon though. It takes a bit of getting used to if you've been using a keyboard set up for a long time, but I wouldn't call it clunky. Just...different.

all genres - Keyboard > controller for me but then again, I NEVER use thte default keyboard controls, I always change them to the right side of the KB (i use normal arrows for movement, then
NUM - 1,2,0,del,7 Delete, End, Home, Insert, Page Dwn and Page Up, Enter, R Shift, and R Ctrl for other functions, then mouse 2 for jump, mouse 1 = action/shoot

If you're playing something online where 'communicating' with other players is important, a keyboard really has the edge. Not even a headset is a proper substitute for a keyboard.
I've always favored the mouse/keyboard setup while playing FPSs. It comes more naturally than any controller setup I've ever used.
But beyond that, I'll always choose a controller over a keyboard.

I like Keyboards for FPS's but that's about it.
EDIT: Oh, and I think it's impossible to play a RTS well on a console.

RTSs work with controllers? Nah, I prefer my keyboard and mouse. Same goes for FPSs. For the rest of the genres, I prefer a controller.
Can't really say one is better than the other when it comes to gaming. Some games are tailored specifically for the keyboard/controller/touch screen etc etc. It's game-by-game basis.

I personaly like controllers, they are simple, and personaly they feel better to me. holdign the controlelr is so mcuh more natural than w,a,s,d. however soemthigns you just need a mouse for. or a mouse wont work. katamari probly wouldnt go over with the PC to well.

Neither!!! scream
Keyboards are for typing... Pads are for scrubs... Sticks are for pros heart heart

Rly though, I've made an almost complete conversion from typical Square RPG fangirl to 2D fighter fanatic and find that other genres arn't competing with enjoyment I get from fighters. As such, I have revoked the usage of other controllers, mice, and keys (mostly) to play. Now, I do enjoy a game of DDR...
