Taverns. They're everywhere. Whether you want an adventure, information, or, heaven forbid, a drink, a tavern is always a perfect place to go. Most adventure stories that take place in pure fantasy world factor a tavern in somewhere: from Eragon, to Lord of the Rings, to the Belgariad, and many others. Why should we, as roleplayers of the first class, be any different?

The plot will be made up as we go along. Remember, this is a human tavern, so until we get out of the tavern, there should be no non-humanoids; you know how humans are about their cities. If you wish to join, please PM me a very brief application with your character's name, age, gender, and species. I will not post it here; I will simply approve it, and once I have, you may make your first post. If your character is one of the magic users listed below, please specify that in the "species" section. You don't need to tell me what your powers are.

INFORMATION:

We are in a country called Aelon, one of the five countries in this world that have been "discovered." The setting is a tavern in the south of a city called Lens, which is the largest in the country, second only to Arhall, the capital. It is a major trade center, being on the ocean, and with easy access to the rivers and roads of Aelon.

Here's the map of the five countries:

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Currently, we are just east of Lens.

SPECIES:

Kaegon (plural Kaegii): First, imagine a cat-mermaid. Cat's body to the waist, fishes' body waist down (meaning it has no back legs, just a tail). Then make it about the size of a horse. Cover it all over with white scales instead of fur. Make the face and body a tiny bit more dragonlike. Give it dragon's wings. There you have a Kaegon.

They're sentient, civilised creatures. They live in tribal cities, their homes are underwater caves, but they can move on land and in the air as well. They breathe underwater, but also in the air, since they have gills on their necks, but also mouths. They run by taking a step with one foot, leaping with the other, and giving a flap with their wings. It makes for a sort of bouncing run.

Elleths: They are ancient relatives to humans. Some Elleths decided they didn't like Elleth society, and broke off and multiplied enormously. They became humans. The Elleths decided they didn't like the way humans were going with the world, so they hid themselves away in the Kaegon forest, Kaehall. The Elleths and the Kaegons are allies, like two different countries, except they share the same space. The Elleths don't bother the Kaegii or their villages and vice versa, unless there's a war, or something majorly important going on. Then the Elleths ride the Kaegii, but they know they can't just treat them like horses or the Kaegon will dump them in the ocean, or some other form of punishment.

Elleths and humans eventually became different in appearances as well as beliefs. The Elleths have a brown, dusky skin colour (somewhat like an Indian skintone-- that's INDIAN, not Native American) with a very light tinge of green. Their hair tends to be dark. They are slim boned and tall, with long legs. Their eyes are slightly slanted and they have better hearing, vision and sense of smell than humans. They can also see in the dark. The normal dress is, for women, a long tunic with slits up the side of the leg for easy movement, and for men, the same, but no shirt part on the tunic, just the covering that hangs from their belts. Most of them carry a bow and quiver, the bow strapped over one shoulder and the quiver over the other. The straps make an X on their chest. Some of them carry swords. The mages have silver armbands, and the headman and woman have blue outfits. All the other ones are green.

Tanuli: Tanuli are like a cross between a wolf and a lion. They have a wolf's body, and a somewhat catlike wolf's head. They are covered all over with chesnut-brown fur and they have a mane of dark brown fur. They live in packs like wolves, and they have songs. Some people can understand their language, but it is impossible to learn; it's spoken, like ours. They are great singers and frequently will sing for no reason at all. Most of them are very good at making up songs.

Dragons: Fairly self-explanatory, except that I created different orders for Aelon. They are red/fire which breathe fire, blue/water whcih breathe water, green/earth which shoot vines, yellow/air which breathe rainclouds, white/light which shoot lighting, black/drakness which breathe dark clouds, purple/magic which breathe spells of different kinds, copper/war which shoot molten metal, grey/death which shoot acid, health/gold which breathe healing clouds, and silver/ice which shoot ice.

Gryphons: I'm pretty sure everyone knows what a gryphon (griffin) is. In Aelon, they are raised by a colony of females (the males are wanderers). They laws are 1) Don't lie (actually, they find this impossible), 2) Don't kill anyone defenceless, and 3) Don't betray your companions or family. Their language is spoken, but it is impossible to learn it. Only gryphons and people with gryphon blood know it.

Gargoyles: Gargoyles' native homes are churches, temples, and old buildings. They look like they are made of stone and they usually keep out of sight, so they are looked at as a myth. They are generally very curious. They have wings most of the time, but the only consistent feature that they all have is their stone-like skin. They can vary in size from about 8 feet tall to about 4 inches tall.

MAGIC USERS:

Mages: Use a power from inside them.
Wizards: Use a staff with magic inside to cast spells.
Magicians: Lesser Wizards, use a wand.
Enchanters/Enchantresses: "Hypnotize" their victims and get them to do what they want.
Sorcerors/Sorceresses: Summon demons/spirits/elementals and control them, forcing them to do the work.
Shamans: Lesser Sorcerors, usually connected to a tribe of some sort.
Necromancers: Revive the dead and control the zombies.
Witches/Warlocks: Use potions/powders to cast spells.

None of these are "evil" and none of them are "good." Each magic user choses what they want to do, just like normal humans. For example, there are good mages, and there are evil mages, and some that are somewhere in between.

Anyone can learn to be any of the above except a mage. With mages, you either are or you're not, since the power comes from inside them. End of story. Sometimes, someone will be one kind of magic user, and know a little of one of the other kinds, for example, a healer-mage might learn some witchcraft, or a necromancer might learn some sorcery.

Zayne Shadrain, summoner of spirits, both malevoyant and benevolant. It sounded nice, the young sorceror had to admit. However, he rarely used his powers, save in lessons. For, this young man was still a sorceror in training at the school, although he had quickly attained third highest class. He taught lower students the very basics, juggling lesson plans with lessons to complete.

That very day, Zayne had been promoted up to the third highest level in the guild. Oh, but how nice it would be, when the day finally came that he had graduated, a full-fledged sorceror! It would mean less chores, no lessons. And more teaching of the younger ones. That would be splendid. Teaching was just so much more alluring than being a student. It held a certain ring, a note of pride if you will.

No matter, tonight was a night of celebration. Running a hand through his platinum blonde hair, the young man's cat green eyes danced in the light of the fire. He had chosen a tavern near the sorcery guild for his personal celebration, so as not to be too far from home. Seeing as this was a fairly magical district in the town, Zayne recognized many of the patrons in said bar.

There were a couple of elderly wizards who were having an interesting conversation about the differences caused by the material ones staff was made of, and a gaggle of witches arguing about the best ingrediants to use for a Shrinking Spell. Very few sorcerors were present, and even less mages. However, there were a few necromancers in one of the saloon's darker corners, which only added to the sense of austerity that seemed to radiate from them. It wasn't unusual that there were a fair few non-magic users in this particular pub. However, there were the odd few scattered around.

For his part, Zayne was on his own. He didn't like being in loud, raucous groups, and the friends he had at the guild were few and far between, since many of the students were recluses, holing themselves up in their rooms ninety percent of the time. Unlike Zayne, who preferred to study in a small, quiet group most of the time. But no matter, it was his night. And nothing was going to take that away from him.

Zayne was fairly feminine in his features, with fine features and wide green eyes. He was tall and thin, fitting the expected norm of most magicians, in any form. However, unlike most people's ideas of a sorceror, he did not have penetrating eyes, or a severe look. He actually bordered on innocent looking, on account of his features. This often led people into believing he was far younger than the age of twenty-six, his proper age.

Taking a sip of the drink he had ordered, the stripling sorceror relaxed into his seat with a contented sigh. Life was good.

{{Wow. It just hit me right now that I was master of this thread. Wh00t! Go me! ^^}}

Aislinn was annoyed. She'd been travelling for three days; for all of today it had been drizzling. Her companions were stopped, since Osyth was injured and Kenaz was looking after her, but they'd sent her ahead to get food. She found it easier to become cranky than to hunt for more, so she was headed for the city to buy some.

She was soaked. Her leggings and her long-sleeved shirt were wet, completely plastered to her skin, and their normally shiny colour of green was almost black. Her scimitar, D'glace, strapped to her back with the handle on the left side, and her dagger, Vlia, strapped to her left calf, thankfully were dry; they were icy and cold and froze the water before it could get near.

She was getting very mad at the world in general for causing her this much discomfort. She'd just escaped from an attempted highway robbery. The only thing that gave her any satisfaction at all was that she'd broken the unfortunate theif's arm.

She prowled down the streets of Lens, splashing in the mud and scowling at anyone who glanced at her. Her gaze darted around and landed on a tavern called the Silver Dragon. Hn. How fitting. She walked over to the door and shoved it open.

It was a fairly nice tavern. The floor was clean and scrubbed, there were mats for patrons to wipe their feet, and there was a friendly smell of mead, beer, wine, and beef. Grinning, she walked in, her bad mood already dissipating. She parked herself at a table against the wall and beckoned over a server. No harm in getting comfortable before she went back to them.

"I'd like some mead, and a piece of that meat over the fire would be nice." The young man nodded and hurried off, returning a minute or so later with a tankard of mead and a plate with a large hunk of beef resting temptingly on top. Aislinn nodded her thanks, pulled out a belt knife, and cut a bite, speared it, and popped it into her mouth. Now that there was something in her stomach, she spared a glance around the semi-crowded room.

She could tell at a glance that most of the patrons of the Silver Dragon were magic users of some sort. Good. She wouldn't stand out as much. Her hair was long and oak-wood brown (now almost black from water), which normally was a bit odd, but she'd seen that many magic users tended to grow their hair out longer than was normal. Her eyes were bright green, and somewhat glowing, but that might go unnoticed as well. She was tall and slim, and her feet were bare, as always.

One person in particular cuaght her eye. A young man, not much older than her own 18 years, was sitting at a table not too far from hers. He looked particuarly cheery, and not too wet, so she assumed he hadn't had far to walk. She sipped at her mead and then quickly finished her beef, still glancing over at the cheerful man.

What cause does he have to be so happy? she grumbled to herself, and, more importantly, can he pass his good mood on to me? This thought was enough for her, so she picked up what little drink she had left and walked over to his table.

"Hi. Mind if I sit here?"

Zayne blinked, snapping back to reality as he was addressed. He had been daydreaming, as per the norm. However, when he realized what was going on, he blinked hiw wide eyes and shook his head to clear his mind of the fog that had settled over him.

Seeing the strange girl, the young sorceror blinked, surprised. Apparently, she'd been out in the rain. But...Why? No matter, it wasn't for him to quetion. People's lifestyles were their own. He grinned widely, making hiself appear temporarily even younger than he appeared anyways.

Zayne's voice was masculine, but not the deep tones of an old man who worked out. It was more of a buoyant voice, the kind that makes people want to instantly trust someone, and finds it easy to make people happy.

"You're welcome to. There's more than enough room...I'm Zayne."

As he spoke, his eyes lit up with warmth, and the joy in them was amplified somewhat. Spending time with people was fun, especially when one didn't know them. Because that way, ones views of the world took on a whole new concept.

Kaede sighed into her mug of ale as she read over the potions book she was supposed to be memorizing.

" I do not understand why I must learn witchcraft when I am already a mage..." she mumbled. Her long, dark brown hair fell into her face. Sighing again, Kaede pulled it back and tied it into a large knot. She sat back in her dark, corner seat and flicked a finger. The page of the potions book turned from the ingredients page to the recepies page. Her bright aqua eyes skimmed the page quickly, but seemed to retain no new information. Kaede was just too distracted. She lazily clapped her hands together, shutting the book. Setting down her mug, she got up from the stiff wooden seat. Her long green tunic, which was the classic wear of Elleths, seemed to flow around her ankles. She arched her back, stretching out the knots that seemed to encase her spine, thanks to the hard backed wooden seats of the tavern.

Once Kaede felt sufficiently relaxed, she picked up her mug again. Her atuned ears could catch the sound of each rain drop hitting the roof of the tavern. She looked around the tavern, and noticed a boy and girl about her age, sitting and talking. They were magic users, as she was. Since she was bored, she decided it couldn't hurt to go and make polite conversation.

Kaede grabbed her bow and arrows and slung them over her shoulder, before tucking her potions book into her pocket. Mug of ale in hand, Kaede sauntered over to the table where the boy and girl were seated.

"Thanks," Aislinn growled, taking a seat. "I'm Aislinn. I don't suppose you could give me your cheery mood, by any chance?"

Still sullen and annoyed, she downed the rest of her mead, then slammed the tankard down on the table. "Why are you so happy, anyways?"

Suddenly she sneezed. "Erg. I'm soaked." She pulled her feet up onto her chair and hugged her knees in an effort to keep warm. All in all she looked rather odd, but she didn't seem to mind. She was that kind of girl.

"Uhh...I could, if you wanted. Or, I would be more than willing to try."

At the slamming of the cup, the sorceror's vibrant green eyes widened, and he pushed his bangs off his face, in a slight shock. The girl was apparently moody at this point in time, but also sick. At the girl's sneeze, Zayne summoned up a small illusionary spirit, one that resembled a rather cute animal. While it frolicked on the table, the young sorceror got up, and fetched a blanket from the innkeeper. He placed it around Aislinn's shoudler gently, before reclaiming his seat. The strange rabbit-cat-like thing was still having a blast on the table, and he brushed it away with the wave of his hand.

"I'm happy, because I just got promoted up a level in the sorcery guild! It's great! No more floor-scrubbing for me...Heh..."

Realizing another girl was approaching him, the sorceror-cross-enchanter turned to face her, a welcoming grin on his face. He was clad in a pale green robe, one that complemented his platinum hair and green eyes nicely. After all, he wasn't about to dress in orange, and be overtly noticable in a crowd.

"Hello...Would you like to sit with us?"
PostPosted: Sun Mar 13, 2005 5:03 pm

Kaede watched the boy, now obviously a sorceror, conjure up a cute little animal that danced and played infront of the dripping girl. He went and got the sopping girl a blanket. Kaede's eyes danced along with the little creature. She grinned, entranced. She didn't notice when the boy turned to her.

" Hello...Would you like to sit with us?" The boy asked. Kaede jumped at the sound of the boy's voice.

" Oh! Yes please!" she smiled back. She flicked her hand and a chair pulled up in front of her. Kaede sat down daintily, drapping her things over the back of her chair. " I'm Kaede." She pronounced it Kah-Day. Kaede offered her hand to both the boy and girl in turn. Her aqua eyes were bright and playful. She pet the little creature as it pranced upon the table. Its cute little face nuzzled her fingers.

Zayne grinned widel,y and shook the girl's hand. He had no objection to being friendly, in fact it suited him rather well. Especially since he always managed to find himself surrounded by fun people. Once he had reclaimed his hand, he took another sip of his drink. Unlike the two girls, he had ordered a more mild drink. That of hot chocolate. He might be a fully grown man, but he still didn't like the taste of ale.

"My name is Zayne...I'm a sorceror by trade, but I've got Enchanter as a back-up plan."

Upon seeing her delight with the small creature, Zayne summoned up another one, with ease. Although, this one was a different colour. These creatures were beginner's work, the kind first level apprentices learned. However, they had never ceased to win anyone's heart over, as far as he knew.
PostPosted: Tue Mar 15, 2005 6:09 pm

Kaede giggled in delight at the second creature. She turned to Zayne.

"A sorceror and an enchanter. That is quite a feat. I am a mage attempting to be eduacted in the skills of witchcraft, but I am finding it harder than expected. As a mage, I am used to working with what is inside me, and what i already know. Witchcraft is a lot more memorization, like cooking." Kaede laughed. "I don't supposed you know anything about the intricate skills of potion making? I am having such a dreadful time..." Kaede pulled out her potions book and placed it on the table in front of them. Kaede looked between Zayne and the other girl, who had yet to introduce herself.

Just out of habit, she played with a conjured ball of flame, rolling it over her slim, pale fingers. Her other hand scratched the little heads of the tiny creatures that skipped along the table. She had no idea of their breed, but they were absolutly adorable none the less.

"Guilds... I've never held much with guilds. Of course, that's to be expected. My magic type doesn't have a guild, and even if it did, I'd be the only member. I'm the only one with magic like mine. I'm Aislinn by the way."

She idly watched the little creatures gamboling about on the table. "I know some potion work, mostly healing things, with plants and that sort... but I do know some darker stuff. It comes in handy for a wandering girl." She grinned ferally.

{{I edited the first post a bit (added a bit more info for Gryphons, and added another creature). I also edited my second post, because I remembered after I started RPing with Aislinn that I'd wanted to Rp with Osyth instead to "break her in" (like a new baseball glove). And since there's a storyline involving Aislinn and Osyth and a few other people, I can't just have Aislinn and Osyth, since there is no part in the story where it's just those two. It's either just Aislinn, just Osyth, just Kenaz, just Aislinn and Kenaz, or all three. So I'm adding in Osyth and Kenaz, who are now waiting outside the town. ^^; Feel free to add in more characters if you want, but make sure to PM me their applications as well. ^^}}

Kaede turned to the girl.

"You know about potions? Thats great! Any tips for a newbie? I am really rubbish at them." Kaede pulled out a notebook, some ink, and a quill. "My potions master has left to with some sort of quest, and wont return for months. What sort of apprentice am I, with no one to study under? He left me a book of potions and told me to learn them before he returned. So far, i haven't been doing a very good job." Kaede laughed, embarrassed.

She still played with the intricate flames that danced around her fingers. With a small twitch, the flames started to blaze different colours. Kaede had mastered her mage craft quite well, and was used to working magic with a mere notion of her fingers or flicker of her mind. Having to mix potions with exact ingredients while sometimes murmering incantations was a completely new world to her.
PostPosted: Thu Mar 17, 2005 6:43 am

{{Since I don't actually know anything about making potions, I'm going to fake it here. ^^}}

"Most of what I know is just basics. Here," Aislinn replied, pulling a piece of paper, a bottle of ink and a quill out of her bag. She quickly jotted down some points and passed it over.

"Most of my potions are natural, not magical. Those are lists of some herbs and what they do. You can make any combination of things with that."

She stretched and stood up. "I'm going to have to go. I have some companions waiting outside of the city. They're expecting me back before midnight." She picked up her stuff and sauntered over to the bartender.

"I need some food, enough to travel on for a few days. And, if you can provide it, a sleeping roll and some badages would be most appreciated."

The bartender grunted and pulled out a stack of traveler's bread. It seemed that he was used to providing for travelers. He watched mutely as Aislinn cut some slices of beef from the spit over the fire. He wrapped it up and handed it to her as she was passing him some coins.

"No bandages or blankets for sale, sorry. Healer's down the street, she'll have some."

Aislinn thanked him and turned to walk out the door, waving cheerfully to the people seated around the table.

Kaede thanked Ailsinn as the girl got up and left. She disolved her rainbow flame with a snap. She pocketed the notes Aislinn had written, promising herself she would study them later.

"So what brings you to the tavern?" Kaede asked Zayne, sipping the last dregs of her ale. She signaled to the bartender for another pint and settled back into her seat. She enjoyed the tavern and its dusky enviornment.
