She knew--subconsciously, anyway--that she was wandering around again. In that place, again. The place where she'd met Korou, her cheetah friend. She had wandered back because she had wanted to play again.

And now, she was just wandering around, wondering if he would find her. Of course, she had met him at night, so that might be difficult now... it was late afternoon when she had come back to this place. Or she should say, that place, since she was currently lounging on a small boulder that helped her to overlook the play area.

"...Family..." She was wondering about that term again--word, actually--and she just couldn't figure out what it meant. A home, she could, at least, partially understand. It was a place to return to, someplace safe. At least, she had heard about it. She loved to learn, and snooping around had helped her with that.

"Well... let's see if I can figure out what it means..." So she returned to trying to figure out what "family" meant. "...Family..."

The dark cheetah femme was also wandering this fine afternoon, enjoying the light breeze as it tickled through her dark purpleish fur. Her lighter purple eyes closed for a short while as she walked, sure-footed even with the brief loss of sight, before taking a deep breath and opening her eyes again with a little smile. She'd had a rocky week, but finally things were looking up again for her.

It was then that the sound of someone speaking caught her ears, and they perked and swivelled in the direction of the voice - young, it sounded. She spied the silvery lioness then, her curiosity piqued as she clearly heard the female discussing with herself the meaning of family. This young female didn't know? Then she must not have one. Zakiya sighed. How many more homeless youngsters would she come across? First Korou, then Tama... now this young female, it seemed. Each one pulled at her heartstrings.

As she was already in the lionesses line of vision anyway, Kiya altered her direction slightly and began meandering slowly toward the rock the female was perched on. She really couldn't help this impulse. It was instinct to the cheetah to help those who needed it, if she could.

Safura blinked blearily in the hot afternoon sun as she stared at the area where she had met Kor. Kor... well, his full name was Korou. She loved nicknames--it was one of few things that she liked to do. She gave nicknames to her friends. There was Ama--Amani, Jina--Jinamizi, Kiji--Kijito, and now Kor--Korou. She smiled to herself. She was so silly sometimes. As she continued looking out across the area, she glimsped another cheetah. Or at least, she thought it was a cheetah. The femme, dark purple-ish black in color with black spots, was moving toward her, ever so slowly.

She blinked to clear her eyes, blurry as they were with the rising vapor of the late sun. She stood, and hopped down from the boulder she was lounging on. She approached the female slowly, trying to keep a cheerful--and hopefully, intimidating, in case the femme might be a bit, well, ferocious--appearance as she said, "H-Hello!" She mentally winced. She sounded so... nervous. Maybe it was because the femme had Kor's scent on her, if faintly. It mingled with the femme's natural scent, along with another male's; she couldn't tell of the other male's was her age or not, but she knew it wasn't the scent of the femme's mate.

She stopped a certain distance away from the cheetah, and sat, scarlet eyes glistening with curiosity, fear, and excitement. Her silver fur glisten slightly the sun as she swerved her ears forward, shifting nervously from time to time as she waited for the femme's reply.

With a smile on her maw, Kiya came to a stop when the little silver lioness did, slowly lowering herself to a seated position as she watches the femme with those kind light purple eyes of hers. She could tell the she was nervous, and a bit frightened, which was unsurprising to the older cheetah. Her size and age were often intimidating to smaller creatures that inhabited these lands, and for some reason her dark fur was, too, although she'd never understood why.

"Hello," she replies calmly, in that smooth, soothing, mothering voice that she seems to use, by habit, on younger creatures, especially those of the feline quality. It had helped to calm many youngsters she'd met on her travels, so perhaps it would have the same effect on the little lioness. She felt better herself when others felt at ease around her.

Safura swerved her ears back and forth as she listened to the--strangely soothing--voice of the femme in front of her. "You're not trying to trick me, are you?" she said, unsuredly. She had heard of certain felines using their voices to trick and then use younsters like her...

Now that she thought about it, Harabu--someone she had met long, long, long ago--hated females, and maybe this one trick was why he did.

...or was he raised that way?

Either way, she shifted on her paws and moved toward the femme cautiously. "You have pretty fur," she commented unconsciously, staring at the dark coat admiringly. "I wish I had pretty fur like that. It looks really silky."

Zakiya shook her head from side to side, although her eyes never left the silver lioness. "No, child, I'm not trying to trick you." That was one thing Zakiya would never do. She'd never even dream of it. She's too kind.

At Safura's compliment, her smiled widened. "Why, thank you, my dear. Your fur is very beautiful, too," she murmurs, nodding towards the silver coat of the young femme. "Look how it shines in the sunlight. It's very beautiful indeed."

Safura blushed a bright pink at the compliment--she was happy about it, of course, but not used to them--and she grinned. "Thank you!" she said brightly, instantly coming up close to the cheetah. "You're nice. And that means you won't trick me!" She grinned wider, and wagged her tail slightly--a trick she learned from watching Kor--and asked, "What's your name? You have Kor's scent on you."

She stood and walked around the femme, curiosity written all over her face. "You have spots like Kor's too! Only, his were orange. Oh, and my name is Safura'miezi, but you can call me Safura. I have a long, long name." She was excited now. She also felt safe, so her fear dissipated, replaced by excitement, awe, and curiosity. "Can you run like Kor? Or are you that kind of spotted lion that climbs trees? I'd like to climb a tree..." She rambled on as she came to a stop in front of the dark femme, but soon quieted as she let her words get process, laughing quietly.

The dark femme had to laugh at this female's energetic speech, and its ceaslessness. It was quite amusing to the female, who'd run across a young wild dog pup and her mother, both of whom spoke in a way that was not completely normal - especially in the case of the pup - and it brought back amusing memories.

As the femme finally quieted down, Zakiya thought back over all she said, to try and answer all the questions the little lion had put forth. "My name is Zakiya. It's nice to meet you, Safura. Kor? I assume you mean Korou. I take it he's a friend of yours? I carry his scent because he lives with me. Yes, I can run like Korou, but I've never climbed a tree. I've never wanted to, really." There. She thought she'd answered everything.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Zakiya! Do you have a nickname? I like nicknames. And yeah, Kor is Korou! I gave him that name, because he said that he didn't have one. Oh! And you can't climb trees? That's too bad you wouldn't want to. So you're his adopted mother? Kor talked about you a little, and an adopted brother... I don't think he mentioned a name." Safura thumped her tail as she paused in her energentic rush to get information.

She was thrilled--beyond happy, actually--to meet a full grown cheetah. And Zakiya was a very pretty cheetah indeed. As she formed different thoughts in her mind, each one flickering from one to the other as they were bugs flitting from here and there, she asked, "Um... you... you don't have to answer this one, but... But, do you... do you know what 'family' means?" Safura hated to ask that question, but she felt she would never understand.

Again, the rush of information was amusing to Zakiya, and she even went so far as to shake her head lightly. She could tell that this would be an interesting conversation with the little lioness. And it amazed her that she could keep up with it, too. She must have learned to follow things at a faster pace over a short time; not surprising, since she had Korou and Tama with her, and both could be rather energetic.

"Yes, I have nickname, but I haven't been called it in ages. It's Kiya. Yes, I'm Korou's adopted mother, and his adopted brother is called Tama. Hinotama."

At the last question, however, she sobered a little. How can one describe exactly what a family is? Instead of trying to answer the near impossible question, she instead says softly, "One day, you'll be surrounded by others you care about deeply, whether it's a group that takes you in and shelters you, or a mate and cubs of your own, and then you'll understand what a family really is. What 'family' means is different for everyone, Safura." She pauses, then adds, "When you have your family, you'll know it by instinct, and you'll have the answer to your question."

Safura smiled. "Kiya is very nice. May I call you that? Tama... Hinotama. He's the other cheetah, right?" She wasn't as energetic as before, but she was considerably cheered up. "Well, a long time ago, someone told me that family meant, {F}ather {A}nd {M}other, {I} {L}ove {Y}ou. I can't remember who told me that." She cocked her head. "Is that what 'family' means to you, Kiya?"

Safura thought about the soft spoken advice, and grinned wide. "Thank you for telling me." She stared and stared into Zakiya's deep, dark purple eyes, and grinned as her own ruby eyes seemed to reflect back at her. "You have pretty eyes. I like my eyes better than my fur, though." Safura laughed and then said, "How is Kor? I haven't seen him in a long time. And were you out hunting for food?" Safura scrunched her face as she tried to sniff around for any prey. "There's not much I can find."

"Yes, you can call me Kiya," she says, smiling. "For me, family means everyone I care about, whether related by blood or not. That doesn't necessarily mean anything as simple as Mother, Father and myself. I never knew my father, and my mother and sister were taken from me when I was very young. Only me and my brother were left after that, and for a time, my whole idea of family was shattered. I'd gone from having what I thought was a big family to just having my brother. It was a while before I learned that, for me, family was what I made it by caring about others and being cared about in return." She shrugs elegantly.

As Safura looked into her eyes, so close she could see her reflection in the little femme's crimson orbs, Kiya let out a little laugh. "Thank you, Safura. You have very pretty eyes, indeed, as well as fur. But I must say that I agree that your eyes are prettier, sparkling magically in the light like that." She grins, and then continues speaking. "Korou is... fine," she murmurs, deciding not to recount Korou's little graveyard adventure to the young female just yet, if at all. "I was hunting, yes, and enjoying a few moments of peace and quiet before I found any prey beast worth taking down. You haven't been able to find food, though? Have you not had much practice with hunting?" She never meant the question to be rude, of course. Safura was young, so it wasn't such an outrageous assumption. Still, even if Safura didn't have much experience hunting, Kiya could hardly teach her, as she would offer to do with a cheetah of the same age. The hunting habits and skills of lions and cheetahs were vastly different. Teaching Safura to hunt like a cheetah wouldn't help the little lioness much.

Safura smiled cheekily at the way Zakiya spoke about what 'family' meant to her. "My mother told me that before she died," she stated bluntly, with no emotion, eyes hardening slightly. After a moment, however, a smile returned to her face, and her sparkling eyes came to life. "I can hunt. I learned fast enough, anyway. Mom died before I was ready, after all. So... you can say, I've been wandering around, searching for knowledge. I think knowledge is one of the best ways to survive, to me." She cocked her head, ears twitching. "I hope Kor didn't get in trouble! If he did..." her tone took that of worried, and she narrowed her eyes as many different scenarios flashed through her mind.

"Well," she began, "I hope I'm not bothering your peace." She laughed, quietly, as an idea sparked in her head. "Show me how you hunt? Please?" She was eager, yes. Quite a bit. She wanted to see a cheetah in action. When she'd first met Kor, he had been... injured... and after she'd gotten to know him, it hurt her that one of her kind would be so... mean. She knew, however, that if she did meet up with those kinds of lions, she'd be killed. So she did her best to avoid those lions... but most lions were quite territorial, making them hostile. She sighed. Being a rogue sucked. Her life sucked. But now... Now, she had met two cheetahs. Both who helped cheered her up considerably. "Show me how you hunt!" She asked--almost demanded--in her eagerness to see... and learn.

She forgot about everything else the young lioness had said when Safura asked her to show her how she hunted. It wasn't the best idea to do this for Safura; it cuold very well give the young femme the illusion that she could run as fast as Kiya could, and hunt in the manner of a cheetah. Safura had to continue teaching herself how to hunt properly, to perfect a technique that worked for her.

With a little sigh, Zakiya says, "I can't teach you, if that's what you want me to do. I can make a kill for you if you're hungry, but that's all, I'm afraid. It would do you no good to try and learn how to hunt like me. You have to carry on teaching yourself, sweetheart."

[Sorry, it's bad, but I'm braindead for so many RPs right now. x.x]

Safura blinked, and then laughed, her voice sounding similar to a soft breeze tinkling a silver bell. "No! I just want to see a cheetah in action! I know I'm different... and I can't run as fast. But... I'm strong. If I grow strong, I know I can at least... run at least half of your speed." She laughed again. "Please, Kiya? Show me how you hunt! I don't want you to teach me--but I am hungry--I just want to see you run!" Safura knew that she could never run as fast as a cheetah, but her heart soared at the thought of watching an experience cheetah in action.

She hungered for knowledge, strength, and... well, she wasn't sure what else it was that was nagging her, but she did want a home and family, although she figured she'd have to find out what it was that was nagging her at the back of her mind. For some reason, 'mate' came to mind, but she tossed that thought aside for future contemplation. "Kor told me that we were different. And I know. So... all I can do is make spots on me! With mud!" She laughed again, because Korou had actually done that to her--thrown mud-colored spots on her fur to try and turn her into a cheetah.

((That's okay. I know what it's like with writer's block.))
