Altars and Shrines
Post pictures of your Buddhist altars/shrines here. I've always been interested to know what other peoples' look like. Below is mine - I apologize for the poor quality of the picture.

looks cool ^_^ geh...but I can barely almost make it out though. I dont have a scanner so i'll describe my altar. My altar consists of Kuan-yin (Kannon in Japanese) an electric voice chant that chants her mantra in Chinese (Namo Kuan Shi Yin Po Sa), the Heart Sutra (behind the little statue) a small calendar my friend sent me from Japan, and a lil vase with origami flowers and an Omamori (Japanese Amulet brought from Shrine) and thats really all it) ^_^

The shrine in my church is really nice. It has a lot of pieces to it. It's a tad extravagant for my taste though. Gilt gold, silk fabrics... I'll see if I can find a picture.
The O-Butsudan in my house is much smaller. It's basically a small wooden, lacquered shrine. There's a small statue of the Buddha in it, a gold bodhi leaf, the heart sutra, incense and an incense burner.... yup.

What's the point in having one? (altar/shrine) I never get why people have little altars and stuff

I haven't been able to find any "official" reason why Buddhists have altars or shrines - but I can speculate that it's simply to provide a place of practice. An altar is a physical representation of going for refuge. It's a physical reminder of the three jewels. A place to give thanks and for the teachings.

I have a picture of my altar and mini shrine but not scanned on my computer. I can describe it though. It consists of a table in one corner of my room, on the table is a statue of Kwan Yin, the Maitreya Buddha, and the Laughing Buddha. On the wall behind these are small pictures of a numerous amount of other Buddhas. In front of the statues on the table are some flowers, an incence burner, and some prayer beads my friend got me when she went took a tour of Asia this past winter. Above the table is a small shelf with candles on it, and a large framed picture of Shakyamuni (Historical) Buddha. I love my altar and clean and care for it often.

I keep my alter in my bedroom. Saddly in my area I could only find a chinese buddha (the fat one).
I also keep a little statue next to my computer in the living room where I spend most of my time >_<
