That's a good question.^_^ I'm not too sure why he can't waterbend. I guess he doesn't want to learn and prides himself on being a warrior.

I can only assume he never felt like learning how. @w@ Once the warriors of the village went to war, Katara was the only bender left, and she was self-taught. I can see Sokka not having the patience to teach himself bending when there's a machete he can just pick up and swing. x3~

Part of it, I think, may be genetic- but most of it seems to depend on a person's spirituality. No Air Nomads weren't benders because the Air Nomads had a higher spirituality. In the same way, Sokka is not a spiritual person. At. All. Katara is.

In the Avatar Cine-manga, it says that benders only make up a small percentage of the nation. Not every person in the water, fire, or earth nations can bend. Like in the episode Imprisioned, if everyone there was an earthbender, there wouldn't be anyone in the village ^^ The only nation where everyone could bend was the Air.

I agree with pretty much all of the above reasons. x3 But also, Sokka seems to hate "magic." He prefers to duke it out hand-to-hand, which is understandable. (But I'd rather bend!)

sakka is a total bad a** BA for short, he thinks he can hold his own without the use of bending, even though he knows his sister is an awesome bender, he proly just choose not 2 learn.

I don't think everyone can bend. I'm thinking that, like double-jointed-ness and being able to curl your tongue, it's an inborn ability that only some people have. Sokka is one of those who does not. Why else do you think there was only ONE Bender in the entire Southern Tribe? If it was just learnable, wouldn't there have been more?
However, like many things, I also think that if the Bending ability is ignored or repressed, a person can loose it. It must be nurtured to be strengthened.

u gotta point there but sum1 had said this earlier, katara is self taught, so in a way i think bending can b learned on its own.

Oh, yeah. But she had the ability /first/. If you have that, and the will to learn, you can teach yourself. I know this because I taught myself to draw. biggrin It's still nurturing, just by yourself.

im thinking that its just a random trait that is passed on from the parents to children because not everyone can bend. *like in eppie. 14 "The Fortune Teller" from season one* the two Earthbending twins? the one could bend, where the other couldnt. So im thinking that its that way with Sokka... or... maybe he can bend, and he just doesn't know it... but i seriously think that if he could he woulda realized his abilities by now... sweatdrop whee

Well I think that sokka doesnt possess the spirituality to be able to bend. He can't feel the element. He can't feel the push and pull he just sees it as water, not as a part of this world and his life. He lacks the ability to connect his life to water or any other element (if he was from another kin).
