Tales of the Abyss' story begins against the backdrop of political turmoil between two nations, Markt and Kimlasca. The two nations are upholding a truce that is barely being held together, and the threat of war is ever looming. Enter Luke fone Fabre, a bratty, arrogant, spoiled, self-absorbed son of one of the generals of Kimlasca - and one of the most annoying heroes ever to grace a RPG. Luke has been confined to his home ever since he was a child - after being kidnapped during his childhood years, all of his memories of his younger times have been lost, and so he knows nothing about the outside world. On a normal day in the mansion while he's training with his teacher, Van, an assassin by the name of Tear attacks and attempts to take Van's life. Luke tries to protect his mentor, only to have both him and Tear be warped away by a mysterious force. When the dust clears, Luke and Tear end up in the middle of enemy territory, much to Luke's dismay. Thus, the two have no choice but to join forces temporarily to get back to Kimlasca - though the journey there is inevitably filled with detours and roadblocks.
