In some highschool the students are trying to plan a Gay Prom... and go against the school board who is banning gay couples from going to prom? (correct me if any of this info is wrong... i heard it during dinner smile )
Both my parents and i feel that by trying to separate LGBT teens and people will make people discriminate them even more... and make some LGBT's tihnk that they shouold have special circumstances and such.
I think it'd be better to just protest against what the school isn't allwoing, instead of separating LGBT teens even more.

anyone? anyone? comments?
also if anyone can find an article on it... that'd be cool.

I agree, it definitely would be better to just change the rules for existing school proms.

Unfortunately, that isn't always possible. A lot of students don't feel safe going to their normal school proms, either; that's why they moved to create and organize seperate events for LGBT students and their supporters.

We all want to have a great prom night, so if we have to break away and organize a gay prom to do it, why not? It's prom. This is just the next best thing, really. :]

As for the article, did you want something like news on various gay prom events? Or were you looking for opinion articles discussing the issues?

Articles discussing the issues... it was on Nor Cals local news or sometihng last night...
hmm... if i have time i'll look it up.

Safety is an issue for these things, I'm not against like LGBT only events and such, but with this issue to me it just seems like they're saying... you're not letting us go to prom together so we'll just go to the other extreme... i might be wrong, like i said i heard it on TV, i don't have the article sitting in front of me with all the details.
If there really is a legit issue at a school that keeps LGBT students from enjoy their hghschool experiences, then more action has to be taken to improve the respect and tolerance of the students in the school, though i do understand where comfortability may still be an issue.
Maybe its hard for me to really understand how hard it is to get along in a school where theres a lot fo discrimination. My town is really conservative and discriminative, but my highschool, the students are really open and liberal, the ones i know at least. so please excuse me if i seem i little out of touch wink

I think it is a good thing for places where there is no other choice but I think the better idea is a "gay friendly prom" and not a "gay prom" if there was no way gay students would be safe at their regular prom. But I'm going to mine with my GF (got confirmation tonight!)

EDIT: I exhausted all thoughts on this matter with The Advocate

yes, i think that is a great idea, if there was no other way. But if students are being harrassed bad enough for that to be called for, important measures should be taken by the school administration right? and if the school refuses, its discrimination... right?
i'm going with my bf, i'm going shopping with him on sunday!

Im no longer in highschool myself but I think it'd be a nice thing to do for the gay couples in highschool now. If you could get it oranized and run with no problem then that's good. But it's getting approval and getting it all worked out without homophobic problems (in some areas of the US) that would be the hard part.

I agree. "Seperate but equal" was decided a time ago unequal, and isn't what we're after equality?

That may be how you see it, but let's stop and consider their point of view, to fully understand WHY these clashes are occuring.

First, we'll take another look at the "pro-gay" argument. We, most of us here I assume, did not choose our sexuality. We may have chosen to ACCEPT it or not, but we did not choose IT. Now, because of that, you think that all you're fighting for is to be equal with the OTHER people who didn't choose thier sexuality, but are straight and get all sorts of benefits (legal AND social) because of it.

HOWEVER.

Those on the "anti-gay" side honestly and whole-heartedly believe that you CHOSE to be gay, straight, bi, whatever. The way THEY see things, you people are trying to do somethign that has NEVER before occured in America's history, and what probably shouldn't. They think that you're trying to get yourselves EXTRA or SPECIAL rights based off of a CHOICE you made.

And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is where the problems all occur.

I think that same-sex couples should be allowed at Prom...I see no reason why they should stop them! Heck I'm in Alaska with the snow, polar bears, and conservative republicans and my friends on the prom commitee say that we already have about 12 s.s. couples coming! (Can you say "Progress on the cold front"? pirate )

Anyways, I don't really have an opinion on the "Gay Prom" issue...most kids I know don't even go and/or often end up holding their own proms anyways (either as replacements or afterparties) -- set up a disco ball in your garage, get a few friends and you got a party! The music's better, the company cooler, and no pesky dance codes for the preps and jocks to break on the dance floor! 3nodding

I would say that it's wrong to leave people out of one of the most important nights of their life just because of who they choose to go with. If they said that they weren't going to allow and one dating an African American to Pron it would be the same kind of discrimintion, sort of, based on segregation due to differences that are of little real impact.

Sadly, something tells me that would get MUCH more media attention.

Not a good idea at all. One of the fun things about prom is the crowd! Plus, it's never a good idea to seperate. If people want equality, then that's what you'll get. Besides, would you really want to have a prom without your straight friends? I wouldn't.

Who are they to tell us we cannot attend our high school prom. My school tried to do the same thing for our prom that was a few weeks ago. I am a well known bisexual at my school and I was first told I wouldnt be allowed to attend. I told the schools principal that I was taking a guy and he quickly decided I could attend only if taking someome of the other sex.
I do not think it is right that they think they can tell us who we are, who we can talk to and where we can go. If we give them that right, then soont hey will be telling us we have to have seperate classrooms and school all together. It will be like us LGBT's being treated like the blacks were years ago. Seperate but Equal. Its bullshit! We must unite and keep these people from taking our rights away from us.

I agree that we don't need a seperate prom for gays, we just need them to allow us in the normal ones.
