I just got a very strange phone call.

I'm at work and the store phone rings. So I pick it up and say my usual schpeal "Blah Blah Blah, this is Krystal". And at first there's no answer; that happens alot. Either its the other store calling and playing pranks OR is a customer who lost their connection and they call back. But I'll usually give it a few seconds before I hang up. So I said "Hello?" And the person on the other end of the phone goes "is this Krystal?" And I'm all "Yes, this is Krystal"; and she goes "That's great! Just the person I wanted to talk to."

You can imagine this confused me very much. I couldn't think of anything else to say except "Ok". So she goes into this whole long speech about how one of her friends had come to the store a couple of weeks ago and I was the one who helped her, and how her friend just talked about how great I was at my job and at customer service, and she just went on and on and on. And I'm just getting more confused by the minute.....very very confused. I mean it would've been one thing if the customer I had helped had called, but a customer's friend? sweatdrop

So I'm just listening, and then she goes "And we just wanted to tell you that we think you're doing a fantastic job!" So now I'm just so completely lost I could only comeup with a "Thank you!.....um, yeah."

Still very confused.

Then she starts talking about the business she works for. The World Financial Group, a multi-national financial servicing corporation. Which just confuses me even more. Then she goes, "Now Krystal are you someone who likes to keep your options open?" I said, "Um, I think so. Sure." Her reply is, " Now I can't promise you anything. But my firm has some customer service opening becoming available and my higher up and I would like to meet with you." Silence on my end. "Because we want you working for us!"

eek "huh?"

"I can meet with you Thrusday afternoon or Friday morning, which is better for you?" I told her Friday morning, and she gave me directions and two phone numbers just to make sure I didn't get lost, and then we got off the phone.......and I sat there stunned. Called a few people to tell them, and other than that I've sat here at work completely dumbfounded........very confused. I think I've just been offered a job......obviously better than what I'm doing now. And I checked out all the information she gave me and its all legit. Its a real corporation and she's a real person working at a real office in a real city in a real state......

And I'm still like this eek .

So yeah........

Wish I could have phonecalls like that saying I've helped someone, even if I'm not offered a job, instead of getting calls at home, answering, say hello, wait a couple of seconds (some companies that call me wanting to do surveys or sell me crap sometimes take a moment to fully connect) and then the person on the other end hangs up >.< And this isn't a once in a blue moon thing for me either! I get the same caller (the number is withheld, or I'd call them back and give them a piece of my mind) and they do it near enough everyday. They called twice in one day not this week!

So as confused and shocked as you may be, I'd rather a shocking/confusing phonecall like that than a constant prank caller neutral

And as Nopenname said, being nice can pay off. Shame it's not always the same for me sweatdrop

Before I get going with all of my overly protective-self, congratulations if everything is up to par. Its always so emotionally rewarding to have someone commend us on our hard work. <3

However, my personal reaction to this would have been different. I've had scams attempted on me enough times to be a bit weary, I suppose. First of all, the fact that it was the 'friend' of some random person who came in bashes away credibility in my mind. Secondly, the fact that she showered in compliments for eons before very professionally hinting towards some dream job would cause me to be concerned. Surely it is possible, and without a doubt it happens. I just pray that if you go to meet these people, that you a) do not go alone, b) do not fork over any personal information [fill out an application, for example, with your address and social security number] c) leave or cut the trip short whenever you feel uneasy.

Predators do exist, and every day I hear of new, creative and strange scenarios played out by scam artists and creeps.

I know that my post must seem gloomy and paranoid, but that is my outlook on it. It never hurts to be careful, and truthfully I hope very much that everything is legit, because the job sounds amazing. <3

I kind of second Kalandra. It seems weird to me that she said she wanted to talk to you and called you by name only after already hearing yours and without any attempts to verify that you were the right person.

I would've expected it to go more along the lines of, "Hi...are you the Krystal who was working last Saturday and has blonde hair?" or whatever.

Regardless of whether or not it's legit, good luck! smile

Well, I went to the initial meeting and then the second one she requested. And I don't know what else to check to prove its legit, everything comes out just dandy. I just still get a bad feeling about it.

The job sounds great, it pays almost 5k a month. Which right now with the baby coming would be sensational, and training is 6 wks provided that i can squeeze it in between school, work, etc.

I just don't like the fact that certain things would infringe horribly on the little time that AJ and I actually get together. I mean during the week we see each as he's walking in from work and I'm walking out. And then I'm up for school after he's gone to work. So the only day I don't work is usually the day he doesn't work. Its the only 24 hrs we get together a week, and they want me to give it up for training. Not to mention the $700 I have to pay to get licensed for their job. We already owe more than that in bills this month. So I know we can't afford that.

I haven't talked to AJ about all this yet, its just me and my thoughts.

Ultimately the job sounds wonderful.......once I got to the actual job part. Its the getting there that causes a problem. Referrals of others people I know, paying out money, etc.

It just sounds and feels like a bad idea.

Am I just being paranoid?

No no no no no

If you have to pay 700 dollars (or ANY amount for that matter) to get a job you are being scammed.

My husband took a job with AFLAC and it's basically the same thing.

Does it actually PAY 5k a month, like hourly/salary wage? Or did she say you could MAKE UP to 5k?

Because paying to get a job and "could make up to" is the sure fire sign of a scam.

See that's what I thought, cuz I've already been scammed when it came to "paying" for training to get the job and such. Now I got my money back, bu tI'm still wary of paying out just to get a job.

Its $700 for the course+materials+class time to get licensed. But she showed me the contract and everything. Its a salary. Not making "up to 5k a month".

But I still get a bad feeling about it. but I don't know whether or not its just me not liking what I'd have to do or a sure fuire signt to say "no". confused

She wants me to meet with her again on Friday and then Saturday morning.....and I set up the meeting, but I don't know if I want to go.

I think that if you get a bad feeling, you should listen to your gut.

I wonder if there's somebody you could call, like the Better Business Bureau or your state's Attorney General, to find out if complaints have been filed against the company. Anybody know anything about that possibility?

I have to agree with everybody else this sounds like a scam. My MIL almost got suckered into something like that, this sounds really similar.

Yeah I'm going to talk to AJ about all this when I get home from school. Then I think I'm just going to cancel the other appts. Even if its is legit, its not something I'm willing to do right now.

According to the BBB (that's Bettr Business Bureau) warns against taking jobs that ask you to front some large sum of money first.
