Okay, so I've studied the kanji a bit, but I've heard that the Chinese characters vary a bit in meaning sometimes. So I was wondering, does anybody know a good book or resource to help one learn to read Chinese?
And how many people here can/can't read it anyway? It looks like a daunting task to learn all those characters, but I figure that if I study a bit day by day and just be consistant I'll pick it up no problem. Or maybe I'm being overconfidant. whee

Not really sure where to find a decent source, but here's a hint: Don't use online translators. Some of them are okay, but the majority of them are waaay off. I looked up "Badger" in the google translator and it gave me the character for "Cougar"

@Snuff - hmm. Depends on where you live.. best thing to do is find an overseas Chinese textbook written for people who speak English. I've seen some (my school got an order of them in, they're thinking of introducing mandarin as a foreign language course whee ) and they're actually quite good. 3nodding
Or go and live in China for a year. That works, too. whee

I'll definitely try to get my hands on a textbook. It'll be a while until I can afford that, though. In the meantime, my local library has a really good language learning track set that includes Chinese. I haven't tried the Chinese one yet, but the Japanese one was well put together, and it's the same company, so....ya know. whee I've done some digging around on the web over the last couple of days and I found a couple sites that seem to be a good reference for characters. I've been using this page to find some basic characters. And I know the page says "Kanji", but if you follow the links for the individual characters, they give the Chinese Pinyin for it too. I then use this page to cross-ref it to get the proper meaning. What do you guys think? Does it look like a good idea? And I thought--if it is--then someone else wanting to look into learning characters could try the same thing. whee

Snuff - It's probably quite good to start with.. it's the primary school chinese character learning system for Japan, no? I think it's quite a good way of getting the basics. 3nodding
